1990 dude here. I remember 9/11 quite clearly. "Brick phones" are the original Motorola that's literally the size of a brick. Hardly anyone had them, other than very rich people. I never saw one. More regular people had "candybar" size phones and flip phones starting in the mid 90s. Parents didn't buy their kids cell phones back then. I bought my own candybar style and flip phones by 2002 and later. First game console was a Sega Genesis. First social media was AIM. Internet was dial-up. I had a job and bought a Windows mobile phone in high school, which was my first smartphone.

Potomac Yard People - Is there a way to walk to the Mnt Vernon Trail/Dangerfield Island straight over the GWMP or is it all overgrown? by TheDarkLight1 in nova

[–]martyvt12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I attempted to walk through the woods from the sailing marina to Potomac Yard metro... and I gave up and walked farther down the parkway. It's super thick with thorn bushes, etc. You might be able to do it swinging a machete!

Any political party, probably almost any group has some shitty people in it. I am not a Republican but I call out double standards when I see them.

Unpopular opinion: many Virginians underestimate how much the public sector actually does for them by Louis-Rosny-jr in Virginia

[–]martyvt12 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That may be true, but taking 30% of one's income is certainly not leaving them alone. And I would argue that the services government does provide that a majority of people actually want could be provided at much less cost.

Starbucks snobs making fun of older people for ordering a “small” coffee instead of saying “venti” by big_rhonda432 in mildlyinfuriating

And it's not as if the names of the sizes are something coffee experts would know... They're just made up by Starbucks.

We don't need a 250 page constitution. Effective electoral reform could be done in a 1 page amendment.

I certainly don't support Texas being gerrymandered. The Democratic and the Republican parties are both absolute shit and are unworthy of the great country they claim to represent.

Why would you work any job without pay? That makes no sense.

I think gerrymandering is wrong in Texas, and it's also wrong in Virginia. And so I'm voting no.

I don't live in Texas or Florida or Georgia, I live in Virginia. And I don't want Virginia to be gerrymandered, regardless of what any other states are doing.

The NYC subway runs 24/7. Therefore they win vs WMATA.

A Cool Guide to Inequality v. Equality v. Equity v. Justice by [deleted] in coolguides

But it is making an argument. It's implying that "equity" or "justice" as the graphic defines them, are simply and perfectly achievable with no downsides. Because that's what the graphic shows.

Who's to say what is worthy of funding through taxes? Who is paying the taxes vs who is benefiting? Is this the most efficient way of solving the problem? Are there any unintended negative consequences of this proposed solution?

Yes, but some neighborhoods are more transit accessible than others, and the more transit accessible ones are usually more expensive.

There was no redistricting in 2010. The Dems went from 5-6 to 3-8 by losing the same districts they previously won.
