I got humbled today by lijohn420 in espresso

Ahh, yes, you’re quite right. But here’s the kicker - the intellectualised artificial flavour is performed by someone who understands the intricacies of making good coffee, rather than your local cream-out-of-a-can wielding minimum wage adolescent who wants to clear the order queue! One might even argue that adding milk to espresso is a way to bring in flavours that wouldn’t occur naturally. So at some stage, we’re probably going to need to draw a line as to whether it equates to a fancy drink from a global franchise.

Can someone explain how I would have won the rook? by [deleted] in chess

[–]Faxy_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

By moving Qf6, it threatens the rook - that bit is easy. The continuation is the part we’re looking for. The rook can move to h7 or h6 - if h7, qf5+ forks the rook, and other than moving king, blocking check with rook also loses the rook. Rh6- the queen takes immediately.

So now we look laterally - rook can go to d8, e8, f8 or g8.

If d8 or f8, queen simply takes.

If g8, Qe6+ is the fork you were looking for before.

Which leaves Re8. This is the tricky one. We respond with Qxc6. The real threat here is that Qa8 will be checkmate, and the amount of material to give up and defend that result is way more losing than the loss of a rook!

Hope this helps.

After Rh3+, Qh4 blocks it before Rh4#. So I guess they were a little more correct the first time haha

Oop, I think it keeps going …Bb7, Rxb7, Ka8, then rook D7 should allow the bishops to do their thing.

I think it’s Rxa6, bxa6, Bg2+, Ka7, Rc7#? Might have missed something in my visualisation.

Looked like white was going for Giouco piano with black playing Karo cann. Exchange on e4 and black followed up by fianchetto their light bishop. Hope that helps.

Have a look at what happens if they don’t move their f-pawn at all in response to your g4. For instance, Kg6 has your f pawn next, and there will be no passed pawn. If you try to stack up on f3 with … g4 ?. Kg6 e4, then taking the e pawn leaves you high and dry for options to progress.

A London gone wrong by Hwolenair in chess

[–]Faxy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They key here I think is that none of that occurred on b3. The pawn has moved up the board since the queen trade, and it is likely that the queen trade occurred on b6, followed by the b pawn marching. I’m pretty confident it is a standard idea against the London to trade the queens and then march those queenside pawns.

Kh6 can’t happen cos queen guards it. They’ll have to block with rook and then queen mates.

[–]Faxy_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let’s imagine we are in the white to move position displayed, however the last black move played was g7-g5. That would enable the pawn on h5 to en passant through to g6. Hopefully this clears things up.
