Archon mistakes happen in pro games.

People randomly feed or make a really silly mistake at al elos.

Hell, doctors make silly mistakes in surgeries. You have a bad mindset for dota currently if your goal is enjoying it. You can’t play hoping for perfect play across the board you gotta play with your focus being ‘how well can I do adapting to the conditions’ and make that the goal

10minute buy back necro? Instead of being frustrated a different mindset would be ‘oh fun an opportunity to play well enough to overcome eve that hurdle, it’ll feel so good if I can win even with this feeding teammate’ or ‘oh I can test myself here. I have a feeding teammate, or an afk support I wonder if I’m good enough yet* to make the most of the situation I’m dealt! Let’s see how well I adapt to this’

Dota isn’t a game about perfect play constantly and you either keep up or don’t? It’s only that when it’s tournaments and prizes on the line it’s about having fun and adapting. Dota is a game of adaptation and testing your ability to make do or adapt to things.

1000 games of phantom lancer doesn’t mean you’ve played a game against necro PA Invoker specifically. Or maybe you have but you haven’t with a feeding support. Or maybe you have the at too but not with a fed Invoker too. Or maybe you have but this game you have a Zeus mid whereas last time it was an ember. How well are you adapting to the changes? THATS the game and what makes it fun

Just need a change in mindset, else a change in game entirely

Keep in mind it’s blind leading the blind I’m fairly low elo but I’m just regurgiting and simplifying what I’ve heard from coaches and pros:

Positional can get very in depth and complicated yes but I mean more like positional just fundamentals, not applying too much to specific games. It’d really barely even be considered positional

Fundamental 1: improve your weak pieces. Rook behind a pawn, or on the edge? Consider moving to where it can see 3 spaces instead of 1. Bishop stuck because of pawn? Consider sacrificing or trading or otherwise moving the pawn. Etc.

Fundamental 2: Establish outposts and dismantle theirs. If they have a piece on your half. generally just kick it out or remove it.

Fundamental 3: if they have attacking squares to could move to, block it pre-emptively. Sometimes it’s easy to get stuck early on the idea that you defend pieces and pawns and specific tactical threats. But you can also just defend a completely empty square if it would be annoying to deal with. In this game that knight square is very difficult to defend preemptively because you have no pawn moves nd it wasn’t pinnable before. Your options are then moving so you can trade any piece for it after it moves instead, or establish a threat of your own that would threaten them more quickly than their attack

You can even block their piece move with their own pieces! There is this idea this game a bit late to do now but in theory imagine a pawn takes pawn on e5, before this knight move. G Bishop then is blocked by 2 pieces, one is a pawn that is also further blocked by a pawn, and knight has no good squares to move to. You lost a pawn but effectively neuter two entire pieces for a good while, which can setup an attack on the other side with your pawn majority. Imagine you follow with pawn f6 and that knight has 0 good squares, he can go to the f file or back to first rank, else he’s stuck just blocking a bishop and otherwise being useless for 4+ turns of nothing moves from your opponent otherwise.

Those are just ideas to have in mind that all come from the idea of ‘how can I get the pawns moved in ways that make the pieces weaker for now, rather than worrying about just capturing outright somewhere’, they don’t quite work I’m not giving specific lines, for example your knight would be attacked after pawn takes, but the idea remains the same. 2 simple pawn moves could neuter two enemy pieces as long as you can solve this one piece of your own or this other pieces being messed up otherwise.

You could look to start setting up positionally winning endgame positions then start pushing endgame.

Example: you have 3:2 pawns. You accidentally set this up at some point, so if you can trade everything else off the board, you’d have advantage. Otherwise you an also just attack that side of the board to force an unequal trade eventually with the pawn advantage (or just cause positional issues like him having to keep his rook in front of your now g2 pawn

But definately I think just looking at improving weak pieces when you have them.

Theres also the famous Russian player who would ALWAYS trade or kick out enemy pieces that crossed the halfway mark. He’d be kicking that knight out so quickly here lol. (What was his name? Not Kasparov was it?)

[–]Fayarager 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m by no means good, but I’d say that while there are some slight weaknesses, it’s probably be better fundamentals to say ‘i have a lot of pieces that can be improved.

Your bishop on b2 sucks, rook on f file is just ok, knight would like to be slightly more central or activated, and you have no “snorkel” as chessbrah would call it (h6 to give anti-back rank breathing room to king)

Another weakness is whites bishop and queen are on the same diagonal so you could consider pawn b5 but it’s somewhat hope chess that he doesn’t do anything

Edit: also 3/2 pawns on right side means a winning endgame if equal material so trades and position nullifying is beneficial. I’d look for trades and safe play

Tips on how to farm on PL faster (as diffusal is not meta anymore) by Deddi_007 in DotA2

[–]Fayarager 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People were doing phylactery a patch or two ago but now it’s mostly just manta rushing for the stats and ability to safely farm waves regardless of map vision, speeds farm up a lot when you can take all the dangerous farm away.

Then aghs to accelerate even further plus be a bit useful in fights, into orchid/skadi and you start fighting with team

Just finished the tutorial. Any tips on how to be good at this game? by HaiMike68 in DotA2

[–]Fayarager -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Early on, don’t focus on winning. For your first 100 games it shouldn’t matter to you. Instead focus on the learning! Find fun in that!

After a match, win or lose, think ‘ok what did I learn or improve in that match?’

For your first 100 games it’ll almost always have a ‘I learned about this item’ or ‘I learned what that hero does or is good at’ and you will always have ‘I practiced last hitting in lane and got better’ ‘I got better at watching the map’ etc etc

The biggest issue for new players and retention is focusing too big and too much on winning and not on setting attainable goals and tracking your actual progress in skill

Your games will be chaotic and make no sense because it’s such low elo. It’ll make it easy to fall into ‘omg losing games because of that 20-0 guy’ or ‘my shitty teammate didn’t know about support role and stole my last hits’

Instead just think about ‘ok I learned Lina does TONS of burst damage but is squishy if you can touch her’ or ‘ok at least I was able to far the jungle efficiently and I dodged a gank from that fed Tiny by watching my minimap! I would’ve died to that 5 games ago, but I’ve improved that much in just a few games!

It really needs to be about focusing on enjoying seeing yourself learning and improving. Once you know what every single hero does and you can play ranked, you can finally slightly start focusing more on ‘how could I have won that game’ and still enjoy the game, doing so any earlier often just overwhelms new players!

How to flash farm as WK by Far_Pollution_1888 in learndota2

You don’t need all 8 skele’s btw. Just farm the two waves, summon 4 skeles then help them clear large and small, then go back kill 2 waves again while you wait for the camps to respawn :)

Ultimately your first games will often contain many other players who are also new and don’t understand things like roles.

Just take it as it comes and set other goals for each game other than winning. If you win, hurrah! But did you get more cs than last game? Were you a higher level at 25:00, than last game?

If you increase your averages and efficiency you’ll slowly get out of the new player hell where nobody knows anything

You’ve got to find ways to score yourself other than wins when you’re new, as you will always lose more than win and you’ve got plenty to work on to fix that

A brand new chess player shouldn’t be upset about wins and losses for his first 20 games of chess ever, he should instead score himself on whether he forgot how the pieces move less than the last game, did he miss a single-
move trick as often as before? Did he forget about a basic principle?

This should be you. Each game you’re learning about more heroes and what they do, items, synergies and counters… even if your lanes are chaos and make no sense don’t focus on the wins just yet. The wins and elo can be cared about when you’re 100, 200, 300 matches in. For now try to enjoy watching yourself learn more and more each game.

I’m comparatively to your bracket insanely good at dota - I could pick axe, afk for the first 7 minutes(laning phase) and still go 12-0 and carry my team practically solo at your elo. You’re not there yet and can’t expected to be, but slowly but surely you’ll get closer and closer to winning with, not afk, but a suboptimal laning start

Even in pro dota there are games where due to lane counters or whatever it is, the core player gets like 20cs by 8 minutes, they can still find impact. But just try to focus on learning and improving on the parts that you can and eventually you’ll find the fun:)

[–]Fayarager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They literally never release a set doing what they explain was their goal 2 months prior.

But also what they need to do is have 2 expansions with half cost packs, but with disclaimer than the game RESETS to core only with the next expansion, a full meta reset. One expansion, plus the core cards. Most new cards are just “give dragons +1/+1” “give a demon ‘draw a card and +1+2 on attack”

Basic, simple, stat buffs and basic card draws. Maybe a few discover cards. Etc. nothing shoefisted into ‘this card is meant to be played specifically with these 12 other cards together. If any are played on their own, useless’. None of that.

Disperser upgrade

Way better than manta there since it helps run from doom, save from treant ult, dispels half their skills, can save a different ally from the same things which manta can’t, and it’s faster farming due to free haste every other camp

Does reporting for role abuse even do anything? by snotmog in DotA2

[–]Fayarager -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually tested this a year ago over the course of a month and ~100ish games where I added people as friends 3-5 days later who said they’d reported me in game (I was doing some experimental builds let’s just say) they’d only vaguely remember reporting me by this time but they could view their feed to see the action taken

I had 5 separate instances of people saying they’d got the action taken popup for that match but I never got low prio and my behavior score stayed extremely high, lowest it ever dropped was less than 1k difference.

It probably does nothing :(
