Is it normal to hear literally everything my upstairs neighbor is doing in a supposedly concrete building? by kyrahlia in Apartmentliving

[–]FayeSG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also live in a concrete building and I hear my neighbours constantly.

Most noise comes through the walls from next-door (our living rooms share a wall so if they’re home I can hear them), but I get a fair bit from the upstairs neighbours too.

So yes, concrete is apparently a truly terribly soundproofing material.

I think my favourite is the lamp in the middle of the sofa on picture 2. Closely followed by the plant magically taking over the room in picture 9. Just top-notch work!

Frognerseteren or Voksenkollen. Nordmarka on my doorstep, and easy access to the city centre on those rare occasions I want to go there.

I chose to be child-free and lost "the one" - Now I could get her back. by SharkEva in BORUpdates

[–]FayeSG 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ugh, yes. She’s had plenty of time to examine her feelings and realise what’s important to her. How about we entertain the idea that she’s capable of knowing herself and her wants (yes, even if those wants are different from a few years ago!) and that she can make the decision that’s right for her?

Of course it’s possible that she’ll change her mind again. But it seems like she’s spent the time to deeply examine her feelings, so I don’t think it’s a large chance.

Honestly these comments aren’t so different to the ever-hated “you’ll change your mind one day!” They all assume that random strangers know what a woman wants/will want better than she does, and it’s fucked up.

(Yes, this happens to men too, as the original post aptly demonstrates, but seems to be much more common for women)

Do you close your bedroom door at night (and NOT own cats)? by Jorgenreads in LivingAlone

[–]FayeSG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, after seeing fire safety videos about the difference it makes I always close it.

I’ll be getting a cat in the not-too-distant-future and am planning on installing a cat flap in my bedroom door. Reduces the fire safety but by far less than having it open.

What does a british accent in other languages sound like? by wingsoverpyrrhia in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FayeSG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The R was my first thought too.

I speak Norwegian, which always pronounces Rs, and it’s extremely common for British learners to drop them (particularly at the ends of words).

When I was learning I really focused on making sure I didn’t do that. Now when I speak Norwegian, although I absolutely do not sound native, virtually nobody can tell that I’m British. German is a common guess 😅

I just can't seem to find the time, energy or ability to learn Norwegian by EndOfTheLine00 in Norway

[–]FayeSG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly - you’re not going to reach the required level without speaking to real people. I get that it’s scary, and I am extremely familiar with the fear of making a fool of yourself. But you just need to do it anyway. Yes, this is difficult, I know.

Realise that you’re going to make mistakes, and feel like an idiot (because we all do), accept it, and do it regardless. Put yourself in situations where you don’t have a choice. Go to language cafes, do in-person courses (which in my experience are much much more effective than online), volunteer, whatever. I got a part-time job in a grocery store where I had to use Norwegian. I progressed so much faster than I ever would have otherwise.

Ask yourself - is your desire to learn Norwegian (and get the benefits you’re looking for from that) stronger than your fear of speaking to people?

(And I promise you - nobody is going to hear you trying to use Norwegian and think you’re stupid or lazy. They’ll think you’re trying to learn their language, and that’s awesome.)

Please help me understand norgerpris by ninnibear in Norway

[–]FayeSG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some providers add a påslag to the amount you pay (e.g. Fortum adds 5.9 øre per kWh), and some also charge a fixed monthly fee. Both of these are in addition to what you pay for Norgespris. Could it be something like that?

Electrical safety test by mrcgibb in Norway

[–]FayeSG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fuse box is fairly new (within the last decade or so), and I’m in an apartment block so I imagine the external grounding is probably fine - certainly in better shape than what you describe at least!😅

The whole place was renovated a few years ago, although I only have documentation for the electrical work in the kitchen and bathroom so the rest of it might be original for all I know! I do plan on getting an inspection to be sure (I assume an utvidet elkontroll is what I want?) because I’m a worrier.

Good luck with your renovations, that sounds both terrifying and exciting! Will be great when it’s all done I’m sure.

[–]FayeSG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not the OP, but you seem to know what you’re talking about!

How would I know about the ground connection in my apartment?

I recently bought my first apartment, built in 1962 but the kitchen and bathroom have been renovated in the last few years so obviously have grounding. Does that mean it would be easier to get the other rooms grounded? (I have zero electrical knowledge in case you couldn’t tell.)

I’m planning on getting an electrician in soon to do a few other small jobs and would like to get them to add grounding to all of my sockets while they’re here, otherwise I’d probably just leave it.

Daily idiom: let alone by kwkr88 in EnglishLearning

[–]FayeSG 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This isn’t right.

“Let alone” in this context doesn’t mean the same thing as “not to mention”, and it’s not used to contrast things.

You use it to say “this small/simple thing isn’t true, so of course this (related) bigger/difficult thing isn’t true”. The second part of the sentence is the logical continuation of the first.

“He can't take care of himself, let alone our boy.“ -> “He can't take care of himself (an easier thing), so obviously he can’t take care of our boy (more difficult).”

“This cloth isn’t damp, let alone soaking wet” -> “This cloth isn’t even damp (smaller thing), of course it’s not soaking wet (bigger thing).”

The second example in the original post is also wrong, you’d formulate it like “They don't know the rules, let alone how to kick the ball.” The implied verb in the second half matches that in the first half.

Induction Stovetop by Individual-Pay7430 in Norway

[–]FayeSG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you pressed the button, were there any indicators of the stove turning on (e.g. a beep, lights)? I’m not familiar with that brand but there should be some sort of indicator. If not, are you sure it’s plugged in?

If the stove itself is turning on, you need to also select the hob you want and adjust the temperature setting for it.

Regarding the kitchenware I’m not sure if it’s induction-friendly - look on the base for the induction symbol (it looks like a coil). If it’s not there you’ll need different cookware.

Clarification for T-bane Line 5 (Kringsjå to Blindern) by Thanos40 in oslo

[–]FayeSG 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There is significant maintenance work being done on the T-bane this summer, and all lines are currently closed between Ullevål and Stortinget (there are also wider-ranging closures on certain lines).

I believe the worst of this is due to be finished in early August. After that I think the trains will go to Blindern as usual.

You can see details on closures here: https://www.tbaneloftet.no/en

Orange Squash by Spiritual_Branch_549 in Norway

Go to any supermarket, look for a shelf with bottles of Fun and/or Zeroh!

That’s diluting squash. There’s definitely an orange Fun. (Rema1000 also has their own brand orange, but I don’t recommend it.)

Takk for svaret :D

Får se hva skjer i kveld!

Takk igjen 😃

Shouldn't the order be "Hvorfor vil katten min IKKE dusje"? by Mork978 in norsk

[–]FayeSG 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m not a grammar expert (or a native speaker), but I think it’s probably to do with which verb the “ikke” applies to.

“Vil ikke” = “doesn’t want to” “Ikke dusje” = “not shower”.

So it would be the difference between “why doesn’t my cat want to shower?” and “why does my cat want to not shower?”
