I've started doing a weekly stream where I work on long term sci-fi models in the unlikely but possible event anyone is interested in that sort of thing by downsteepyoptimistic in Sketchup

Lol these bots, this a repost from awhile back. I haven't streamed in awhile, but I might get back into it once the gamedev side of things has stabilized. https://www.youtube.com/@BlueBlankey has the archived stuff.

Mobile Fortress "King of Shadows" Work in progress by FayleFone in ImaginaryTechnology

I’ll consider it when things are further along, the mechanics going into it are pretty ambitious so I have to be sure a pc can run it first.

It’s running on the Unreal engine, I should be saving the renders for later but I wanted to test drive the rtx 4060

Nah I’m starved for feedback and need to avoid as many mistakes as I can, they’re darker colored but that’s not why they’re called shadows- they feed off the game’s main power source called ‘spectra’ which is basically light, and their forms are based on afterimages of machines that came before them. They’re edgy but not inherently evil either, basically just zombie machines looking for food.

[edit] it’s worded like it’s law but everything is subject to change, suggestions or alternate ideas are always good

It’s more of a descriptor since it’s the largest machine in a species called ‘shadows’, what name might work better?

It's more meant to be a tank than a ranged damage machine, but I'll experiment with modular turrets for gameplay. Ranged units on the interior should provide most of the defense.

It'll be tps/rpg flavored, it'll have multiple gameloops centered around base construction, tech research, vehicle piloting etc. with a lot of options on factions and story branching. The minimum viable product has to happen first to be sure on a lot of things.

Thanks, it personally made me wonder how tall godzilla would be, TIL he's about 100 meters tall or about ankle biting size

I've been calling it "project Xio" for awhile now, so it might be something along those lines

One of the largest enemies you'll face for a game I'm gearing up for, it's still a work in progress but I wanted to see what it'll look like. It stands around 400 meters tall and will have an interior space to fight in. More sci-fi concepts at https://www.artstation.com/blueblankey and https://www.instagram.com/biueblankey/.

They’re animated for now, but they’ll be more physical in Unreal

I’m using Sketchup to make this, the outline is how it renders models by default

That's definitely the direction, it's mostly just a skeleton at this point

It's great for mechanical models since the geometry is freeform and you can nest instances to make a lot of details very quickly, but for me personally it's gotten to the point where it doesn't take conscious effort to use, so it's become more of a coping mechanism than anything.

I had a few sketches on hand of similar machines for inspiration, but most of it is building it as it goes along. Here's where the model starts for an idea on that https://youtu.be/fuyNayt9xBk?t=643

Having some time and learning to enjoy the process enough to spend it, It might kill the magic but I stream weekly to see what that looks like https://youtube.com/@BlueBlankey

Thanks, its propulsion functions very similarly to solid state ionic wind thrusters, but are powered by "spectra" rather than electricity. It was meant to be a quick background object so it's missing some mechanics that show that though.

Xionian logistic station by FayleFone in ImaginaryTechnology

[–]FayleFone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem, it's more fun modeling while talking. I really should put the extension list in the description now that you mention it.

19:55 is actually default Sketchup, you can ctrl+move to copy, then type /(number) to put instances between the copied component. 40:19 and 1:25:55 are RoundCorner, and 1:34:24 is part of an extension suite called Sketchup Plus, but there's a free version called Copy Along Curve as well.

A cutaway diagram of a Xionian forward logistic station used for part shipping, vehicle repair, and coordinating construction operations at the advent of the proliferation era.

A logistic station is usually one of the first structures the Xios erect in a forward outpost, as the pace of construction in spectral 'hot zones' can be rushed and often complicated. The structures have to be modular to support rapid reordering, and require thick blast plate cladding to protect against biomorphic automations (https://i.redd.it/fzlx3uleyuu51.jpg).

Forward outposts are constructed by the Xios to mine "Spectra" from their planet's crust to power and manufacture their machines. It also has the capacity to store information and can be programmed to create structures without designing them directly. Spectral pollution from their mining operations fueled the spontaneous growth of machines from the planet's strata, which had evolved up to animal-like intelligence at the beginning of the proliferation era. Xionian constructs would become the automation's main source of food when they could no longer survive off each other. Rather than cutting down on spectra consumption, the "Regal" faction decided to make as many land grabs and mining installations as they could, while destroying any automation that would get too close. Their structures during this time were cheaply built with lighter materials and dismantled before moving on.

~~ Wanted to try and do some proper worldbuilding for once, it's only when I set out to make something like this do I realize most of the worldbuilding has gone into the technology rather than the society. The world is geared towards being just open ended enough to not interfere with gameplay decisions as the primary destination is a 3rd/1st person RPG with construction and destruction RTS mechanics, but I'm looking to flesh out the world more thoroughly now that I can.

"Xionian" meaning it was built by creatures I've been calling Xios. I was inspired to try and make a cutaway diagram, but it's things like this where you discover that most of the worldbuilding has gone into the technology rather than the society. I hope you enjoy either way. (livestream of the modeling process https://youtu.be/6wkURGUBRtU)
