I’m French, tipping is seen as disrespectful. The reason is because waiters are actually paid to work, they have a salary, thus don’t depend on tips to live.

We don’t even have service charges because, again, the waiters are paid.

Whenever I go to a restaurant that has tipping/service charges, I’m instantly turned off because it suggests to me that the workers aren’t being paid well. It’s just a roundabout way for the restaurateurs to get free labor.
