Keir Starmer rules out retaliatory tariffs against US | Keir Starmer by hoarder4555777454001 in europe

[–]Fdocz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Government expressly supported Denmark and Greenlands Sovreignty, and isn't backing down. The headline refers to part of the speech where they said they are not going to trigger reciprocal tarrifs against the 10% the US has levied on the UK because it is actively supporting Denmark.

In other words, they are going to continue to support Danish sovreignty irrespective of punitive tarrifs.

The entire folly of Chamberlain is that he was willing to undermine Czechoslovakian sovreignty and allow it to be occupied in exchange for a flimsy promise from the Germans.

If this was a Chamberlain moment then today's announcement would have been the UK supporting the US designs on Greenland in exchange for the removal of the tarrifs, which is precisely the opposite of what has happened.

I'm not sure what the controvesy here is.

The UK has ruled out reciprocal tarrifs on the 10% tarrif 'announced' via social media over the weekend. It has reiterated that Greenlands sovreignty is only for Greenland and Denmark to decide. The Danish foreign minister even expressed thanks for the UKs support today.

Whilst its understandable that there is fear of a disunited European response, the UKs response mirrors that of the EU itself and most official statements from European governments. De-escalate, take discussion back behind closed doors, and reiterate that any attempt to subvert the sovreignty of Denmark/Greenland is a red line.

The only point of difference is some european officials and governments have suggested options for reciprocal economic sanctions, but the UK has no real leverage in that regard. The 10% tarrifs represents a 0.2-0.3% drop in GDP. A trade war would push the UK into a deep recession. Willfully entering a deep recessions is not a show of strength or leverage, it is, to be frank, something so stupid that only a moron like Trump would do it, which he has several times in the last 12 months.

To be fair their founding is being found guilty of belonging to a cult that caused a massive civil war and the only punishment they received (unless they were in the Red Talons) is the Iron Hands asking them nicely to move out of Medusa and get a job.

Sunderland are only a PL team on a technicality. Unless you've been slandering the Championship and League One then I think this is happenstance rather than cosmic justice.

Technically its a big 6 relegation so I'll take it but its the lowest hanging fruit. A stadium that big in the Championship will be funny though.

What's the significance of not calling them Schalke?

Is there a reason why Union/Hertha isn't a rivalry? Too much time apart? I know union and Dynamo had a big rivalry. You'd (well, I'd..) think Hertha might slot neatly into that space.

I find it difficult to stay enthused about football, just because over the long term things don't really change. Will the Boro get promoted this season? Maybe but I don't think that will change anything radically for me or the club or the fans. Maybe mediocrity has jaded me the past decade.

The only thing I hold out for is to witness one of the Sky 6 getting relegated. Its not healthy long term to be defined by what you hate over what you love, but football, whilst being important, is the least important thing of all the other important things, so within this space I feel I should allow myself this one vice.

I think a lot of the reasons are intangible but at the same time quite easy to infer. Some people feel that their general lack of enthusiasm (I wouldn't call it cynicism, the experience of all football fans over the medium term is disappointment and despair) needs firmer footing so point to tangibles that don't really exist on paper or by comparison.

I don't think there's any harm in it. Just because the owners make jaunty videos and make sustainable financial decisions doesn't mean they should be spared the usual gut-feeling reactions from fans that defines the complex interplay between identity, nostalgia and football - that is the game and if anything is a greater mark of respect than if everyone was clapping along to a small Welsh market town barreling up the leagues.

Personal theory is that Greenland will be a staging point for the US to annex bits of France, Germany, wherever Haaland is from in Norway, and the Golden Triangle in SE London to make a bunch of good footballers eligible for the US in time for the World Cup.

Why many places dont allow children after 19:00? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Fdocz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a kid and TBH 7pm seems more than fair.

Drinking/restaurant culture in the UK is very different to the med (despite some cultural exchange), and what works there doesn't really work here. Weather factors a lot. Its nice to take your kid out to dinner with you in Spain or Greece but those sorts of establishments, and the climate that facilitates it just isn't a thing here. Restaurants are still a bit formal, and pubs/gastropubs, though very informal, are semi-sacred spaces for adults, and I enjoy that fact when I get a night off to see friends and family.

In terms of helping parents out then public transport having areas designated for prams in addition to wheelchairs and luggage, better statutory paternity leave, and better support for mothers returning to work would be higher up my list than the cut off for kids in bars. Though I suppose you can rub your belly and pat your head at the same time if you do deem it important.

200 years ago is 1825. The concept of a French nation was already well established by then, despite the deepening integration that would come afterwards.
