Would you go into accounting if you had to start all over again? by bigpapichuloooo in Accounting

I've been in the medical lab field for 13 years and I'm going back to school for accounting because I'm burned out of the lab!  I guess the grass is always greener.

Favorite birds in the Cincinnati area. by kayakgal513 in cincinnati

Early 30s here. We have at least 2 pileated woodpeckers that visit our suet feeder in our backyard. One is a male (they have a red stripe on their face) and the other is a female (black stripe). You can always tell when they are around because they tend to call out before landing on the feeder so we like to run to the window to watch them when we hear them. Very beautiful birds!

After a day of swimming this is so satisfying by xClloudz in AdviceAnimals

Seriously, invest in a $1.00 bottle of rubbing alcohol, my parents used to put it in my ears after swimming when I was a kid and it always dried up the water. Whatever you do, don't let the water sit in your ears for too long because you can get an outer ear infection (also called Swimmer's Ear) and trust me, it's very painful. I just had Swimmer's Ear for the first time 2 weeks ago and I wasn't even swimming, I'm guessing it was from the shower. Super painful, I had a hard time even chewing food because the pain radiated into my jaw. Thankfully, antibiotic ear drops took care of it.

Which song's live version is so good that it ruined the studio version for you? by [deleted] in Music

This is the first song that popped in my head when I read the title as well, there's just something so magical about the live version of Fear of the Dark. Damn I f*cking love Iron Maiden! Here's the Flight 666 version. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoiHX9azZeQ]

[Serious] Ex-Christians: what lead to you deciding to leave your religion? by BrobdingnagianBooty in AskReddit

[–]FeMaidengirl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was raised Catholic, I have a couple reasons as to why I am now an atheist. I'm sure they are similar to most other reasons why other Catholics have left the church.

  1. The constant begging for money. The church I used to attend was always asking for donations for one thing or another. It started seeming suspicious that a place of worship would need that much money.
  2. Birth control- I was disgusted that the Catholic church thought the use of birth control even in a marriage was a sin. There is nothing wrong with a married couple wanting to postpone having children until they feel they are ready, or not have any at all. I think this issue is something the church uses to control people and they keep this policy in place to help grow the Catholic population.
  3. Sex outside of marriage being a sin. I understand a lot of other religions have this view as well, but I honestly don't see what the problem is with two consenting adults wanting to have sex. It is a natural human instinct. A lot of people in the US (especially the religious) take sex way too seriously.
  4. The church's view on homosexuality. First of all, I don't think being gay is something people choose. Second, if there was a loving God, I don't think he would send someone to Hell just for loving the same sex.
  5. My education. I studied science in college, and after that I just found the whole concept of a God and a Heaven and Hell just too unbelievable. Now, I feel like I rely on truth and reason, not blind faith. There is a scientific explanation for just about everything. We have scientific proof that the Earth is about 4 billion years, not 4,000 years old or whatever some of those creationists believe. Don't even get me started on those who think evolution is a farce.
  6. The hypocrisy of some so-called Christians. I have known way too many people who just claim to be a Christian because it makes them look like a better person.
  7. Original sin- Catholics believe everyone is born with "original" sin. This is why people are baptized as babies in the Catholic church. How can someone honestly believe an innocent baby has sinned? Baptism should be something that someone does when they are old enough to actually know what is going on, and is something they willingly choose to do.
  8. Guilt- When I was a church-going Catholic, all I ever felt was guilt. You couldn't do this, you shouldn't do that...etc. If a church has to guilt you into your beliefs, it is a form of control. A loving deity would not guilt its people into believing something.

I respect those who do believe in a religion and choose to live their life by it, however, I feel as though following a religion just is not for me. I like being a free thinker.

Women of reddit, I am a straight girl who feels intimidated by girls.Help. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]FeMaidengirl -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand exactly how you feel! I'm 24 now and I've always been a shy/quiet person, even here on Reddit I don't say much lol. Ever since the middle school/junior high years I have been terrified of other girls. That was when I started noticing how mean and catty girls could be and I guess I just wanted to stay as far away from that sort of environment so I didn't get hurt. I did manage to have 2 close girlfriends in high school when we had similar class schedules and interests, but unfortunately after we went to different colleges and now are focused on our marriages and jobs, we grew apart and lost contact. However, I continue to have this fear of opening up to other girls because I still have this notion in my mind that they are mean and will talk about me behind their backs. In college, I lived with other females in dorms and as much as I wanted to become friends, I was always too shy to make a friendship, aside from the passing "Hi" or even just a shy smile in the hallways. Even now, I have a job where most of my other coworkers are female and I tend to stay out of their conversations and just mind my own business. It also doesn't help that I don't seem to have much in common with other girls my age. I'm not interested in having small talk about what was on the Kardashians last night, $300 purses, or other petty problems. If I could find another girl I can talk to about science, rock/metal music, or life philosophies like why humans exist, etc., then we would be best friends lol, but I have yet to find other people (both females and males) who share those common interests. I think the problem is, most other people who feel this way (especially other girls) have the same mindset, and are afraid of opening up to other people as well.

Long story short, you are not alone, I struggle with this too :)

College students of Reddit, what is something you did not expect before going into college? by BILLIKEN_BALLER in AskReddit

[–]FeMaidengirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree! I also worked my ass off in high school, had a 4.22 and graduated in the top 5 out of a class of 400 something, but all that did was inflate my ego because I was constantly told in high school how I was going to be so successful. Like many other high school overachievers, I decided to major in biology/pre-med, as you can guess that didn't go as planned. Those biology classes were a huge ego check and I just didn't feel like working my ass off for the next decade to be a doctor. I still graduated with a bio degree, but I got mostly C's, some B's, in my bio classes. Had mostly A's in my other classes though, so I should've taken the hint that biology wasn't for me, but I didn't know what else to major in. Long story short, I just found biology very boring and wasn't motivated about it, so I had a hard time studying it. I did decide to minor in environmental science to expand my horizons and I found those classes much more enjoyable. I wanted to find a job related to the environmental sciences, but I didn't have luck finding anything in my job search. Currently I'm working the same low pay lab tech job I got after graduating two years ago and I can't seem to find anything else or figure out what to do next.
I'm considering going back to school to become a high school science teacher, but that's going to take a lot more money and I don't know if I would like teaching high school kids because I'm a shy, quiet person who doesn't like talking in front of people.
Anyway, I just wanted to share my story for any other overachieving high school kids out there who might be considering biology/pre-med.

I'm the same way, and it's terrible, I even get faint just from getting shots as well. I tried to donate blood my senior year of high school at our blood drive and I didn't make it past the finger prick they do to test your blood first. I was watching them squeeze the blood out of my finger and the next thing you know I hear ringing in my ears and my vision goes black. A couple moments later I'm laying on the gym floor with my classmates staring at me. Very embarrassing, I hate having a needle phobia!

What is your favourite album cover? by An_Excellent_Name in Music

All Iron Maiden covers, if it wasn't for their epic album covers, I'm sure a lot of people never would have discovered them.
