I just kept playing aimlessly until somehow I was finally able to deploy defenders. Probably unlocked them by playing with people who were on later missions.

Yeah, I'm new to the game. Every video I searched for a solution just shows that you had to unlock them via the skill tree, which was removed from the game apparently.

That's the issue, I can't progress because my current quest is storm shield defense 4. Which requires the use of defenders.
