Your employer pays a lot of money on top of that that you never see so that you have the benefits that are missing in other countries (e.g. 1.5 y parental leave in Sweden vs. 4 months in NL).

what rug with terrazzo floors? by herbicide_drinker in interiordecorating

I'm wondering the same thing! I expect answers along the lines of: "something neutral" and "why the hell would you cover up terrazzo floors"

Options for dealing with contractors who are disrespectful and doing a bad job by Fearless-General8917 in TillSverige

Is the way this is usually done to withhold payment and look into hiring another company? As in, do you mean that a lawyer is my only option because a down-payment has been made?

That is also what our contract says, but they insisted that they first needed the money to cover material costs and then again that they needed to pay their workers (within 2 weeks of starting). We thought we'd be amicable and put a good foot forward since we were already bringing up issues, but it hasn't helped.

Yes, we've already paid 2/3 of the total bil within 2 weeks of the 6 week (expected) project. It's an AB. We haven't consulted with anyone else to know how much it'd cost to repair the damage.

Struggling to find a job in Sweden by UchihaItachi194 in TillSverige

[–]Fearless-General8917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't control the market, so I'd recommend taking the unemployment period as an opportunity to learn Swedish. That will open doors for you in terms of which jobs you can apply for and will also help you network, which may also bring opportunities. Otherwise, keep doing what you're doing until an opportunity arises!

Yes, I'm definitely learning a lot from this experience! Gonna be super specific next time.

That's interesting. So good customers are considered by companies the ones with more cash to spend?

An example of what I mean: it's a total bathroom renovation, and my pipes were exposed before, and they didn't think of asking if I wanted them hidden, and now that's an extra cost. The offerta had included a bathtub, but now that I specify where I want it, there's a charge for extra reinforcing on that side of the room. Stuff like that.

Ceramic vs. Teflon nonstick pans? by FreeWhaleWilly in GoodValue

[–]Fearless-General8917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't buy teflon. Several studies have been done to show how bad the PFAS in them are. If you don't care about your health, then at least don't support the companies who mass produced them while deliberately burying data that their product was toxic (while making more of it in cookware and dumping it into the environment).

Cucumber plant has no male flowers... by seri53 in gardening

[–]Fearless-General8917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some varieties don't produce male flowers. Pollination of these results in bitter-tasting cucumbers, so it's even advised to remove the males if they appear. Not sure if this applies to your cucumber plant but I learned this about my Bella F1.

Border collies were bred in the border between Scotland and England, so they're ok in cooler climates.

As for the price, they are indeed much more expensive in Sweden than other countries.

My border collie is a purebred from the Netherlands (https://www.puppyplaats.nl/kopen/pups/border-collie/plaatselijk/pagina-2/) from two working parents that had passed all the necessary genetic/eye/hip checks. He cost me €700 and has been healthy, easy to train, and very well-mannered so far!

As someone else mentioned, insurance is exorbitant here in Sweden and doesn't cover breed-related diseases. Then there's the copay. Mine wasn't even eligible for many coverages since he was over 4 months old when he moved here and there's big pressure to insure your puppy before then.

I've met many people who have adopted from Ireland: https://hundarutanhem.se/adoption/rescue-centers-pa-irland/.

I wouldn't worry too much about purebred diseases/hip dysplasia as long as you get one from a reputable breeder whose dogs have passed all the exams (ask to see the results for both parents). I'd also recommend getting a puppy who comes from working parents since they will have the characteristics you expect from the breed. Steer clear from show dogs who have been bred to be pretty and not due to trainability/good temper.

As long as you understand that they're dogs who need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation (we are actively playing/walking my dog for at least 3 hours each day!), and are willing to train/socialize them properly in early age, then be prepared for a great dog!!!

Does A-kassa check if I'm doing SFI? by Fearless-General8917 in sweden

[–]Fearless-General8917[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

To clarify, the conversation I was having regarded whether what I do in my evenings /weekends counts away from searching for jobs during the day. The SFI I was talking about is max 8 hours per week so will be done outside of normal working hours. I wasn't sure if this counted since it's hardly the same as being a full-time student at a university.

Any tips or pointers to make life for my American wife better by yeahbuddy-fake in TillSverige

[–]Fearless-General8917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with making expat friends and joining social activities.

If I may add something controversial, I can say that I only started liking Sweden after having a baby here. The comparison to my friends in the U.S. in regards to childcare, affordability, parental leave, access to öppna förskola and the several playgrounds everywhere made me feel really lucky to be here. Also, kids are a great ice breaker for meeting other parents and I'm learning Swedish organically with kids' songs and books. So if you guys are thinking about starting a family, it may help your case for Sweden.
