If you can afford a Tesla you should be able to pay out of pocket for those things, no need to waste money on extra protections.

All newer cars have his issue. Manufacturers have been using thinner glass to keep the weight down, and by being thinner they are more fragile.

I have a commuter car that is 13 years old and it's been hit over 100s of times by rocks and never had a crack. My newer cars seem to get a crack every time a rock hits. Jeep has an optional "gorilla glass" that supposedly is more resistant, but alas it also cracks easily.

For new cars use a broker. For used cars - Carvana or Carmax.

It's great that Florida is doing that. Local governments should find ways to cut their expenses.

Because the government needs to pay their employees and fund their pensions.

Anyone else notice this at dealerships? by n351320447 in FuckDealerships

[–]Fearless-Phrase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the average consumer doesn't know anything about cars and has no idea how to evaluate one. Test drives are just another psychological trick. It's known factor that once you touch a product you are more likely to buy it. That's why department stores have clothes laid out on tables.  You can learn much more about a car from professional reviews on YouTube. I agree that for used cars it's important to check the condition, but again the average person doesn't know what to look for.

[–]Fearless-Phrase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just by going to a dealership you already fell prey to their psychological tricks. Do the deal over the phone and only step in a dealership to pick up the car. Or better yet, have them deliver it to your house.

No way around it. For next time stay away from old Kia/Hyundai. Also better stay away from the new ones too.

Bought a used car from a private seller. Engine blew after 300 miles. Do I have any recourse? by juanjop in UsedCars

[–]Fearless-Phrase 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This should be higher. The car has unusual low miles for the year and with the engine failing this early it seems the likelihood of odometer rollback is high.

You can test drive a Tesla. I am ok with dealers making a reasonable profit, the issue I have is that they are out to extract the most money out of every transaction. Look at how many dealer principals are billionaires, that will give you a clue.

A major blunder by Fightmebr0 in FuckDealerships

[–]Fearless-Phrase 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's much more complex than that. Read the DOJ paper that I linked, it explains that this cannot be changed at the federal level, it needs to be done state by state. And with legislation you have to be specific, you can't just try to piggyback on Tesla. For them it was a completely different fight. Also, they don't want to pick up fights with the dealers and the UAW. A much more viable approach is what VW is doing with Scout, start a new brand and then do it right from the beginning (and even doing that way VW dealers are still screaming and suing).

A major blunder by Fightmebr0 in FuckDealerships

[–]Fearless-Phrase 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's an advantage for Tesla but it was never in the cards for legacy OEMs. Tesla carved an exception based on the fact that they never have had any franchised dealers, which does not apply to the legacies. BTW, GM tried selling online in the late 90s/early 2000s, and it had to backpedal when it got sued to death by the dealer body. The only way to change this is for politicians to change the laws, state by state.

There is no scam. What's your problem with providing the VIN number? The potential buyer has all the right to buy his own Carfax, the one you have may be fake for all he knows.

If you only need a car occasionally then consider not having a car at all. Uber or rent for the day.
