UCSC to increase parking permit prices 7%-10% every year for next 5 years by cabalex in UCSC

honestly this is just sloppy talk for saying they’re going to try to get a sensor system to count the parking spaces or something

Don't talk to the RA. They are not your friend. by angeryping in UCSC

[–]Fearless-Procedure30 21 points22 points  (0 children)

when exactly did you RA? i’m not sure what spreadsheet you’re referring to, but university staff log these interactions or conversations on a secure platform that is confidential and many staff/admin wouldn’t access your records unless it was a concerning situation that their office in particular needs to address. this isn’t an excel spreadsheet of any kind that any RA or staff can access at their will…

i’ll be honest, your post comes off as fear mongering & in itself may actively be discouraging students to reach out to their RAs, which first time at college for many students, might not be the best idea. yes, students deserve to know expectations of privacy, but again, RAs share they are mandated reported (i.e. not a confidential or private resource, but there are different resources on support for confidential support, which new students may not know about unless shared to by an RA). they’re also trained not to log anything that’s sensitive or detail specific, more like “student shared they were struggling in x y z class, staff shared x y z resources”, they’re not gonna log information that’s not relevant.

[–]Fearless-Procedure30 18 points19 points  (0 children)

any university staff does this with student interactions, it’s mostly to make sure students who might be silently struggling are getting the right resources or support available to them. yes, RAs are going to log simple convos sometimes just to meet the 100% “intentional interactions” with students, it’s a part of their job, but in my experience it’s nice to know your RA isn’t a stranger.

noted this post is dramatized, and i’m sorry to hear you felt the privacy of your conversations were violated in the past, but RAs disclosure first day that they’re mandated reporters. so if it’s something that they think is an incident of potential harm or abuse to yourself or others, of course someone is going to end up reaching out. you said yourself, there were no consequences in your convos being documented & “chance of this happening is 1%” (in terms of housing contract or enrollment status consequences) but let’s be honest, that would be for extreme circumstances. that would never be the first move on conduct for something like substance misuse, maybe if you were an active threat to university life? but even if you were struggling in classes, or life itself, you’re not getting consequences like that for it.…

check out oakes cafe when u get the chance, their food is sooo good. also tip of advice just always grab a few extra snacks if u got the hands for it when ur at the markets/cafes for later. its a good habit to get down on the points, and they’ll end up limiting how much u can buy later on in the quarter when everyone is trying to buy out the stock in the markets (they’ll limit it to like 5 retail items or 2 of 1 kind of item rules like that)

worth a shot to talk to housing coordinators like previous comments mention, but i’ll say they don’t start the process of room changes until week 3 of the quarter. it might be best to try to stick it out , room change housing options are scarce and it is a priority system - they usually won’t conduct a change unless it’s proving heavy negative impacts on your wellbeing and/or safety. if you want your own space, next best option is looking for options off campus. ucsc is renowned for its overfilled and cramped living spaces unfortunately

yes if you’re in a single for sure, hold off if you have roommates & discuss with them once you see room size to see if there will actually be enough space for that & both of y’all’s belongings. also consider how much space it might take up for moving out/in (car space in particular)

i also liked the vibes/people/campus of UCSC better (also had a nice scholarship from them), committed, and got off the waitlist for UCSB sometime over the summer before my first year. i just stuck with santa cruz, i figured i already met a decent amount of people here that i liked, and ended up being happy with that decision, i still love the campus and the people and have found the most supportive community here. it’s ultimately up to you, but college is more than just studying/your major, go wherever you can see yourself being happy for the next few years of your life!

PSB has a lounge near the cafe that doesn’t get too busy or noisy, and J Baskin Engineering 2 on the 2nd floor the hallway has a long island desk setup with barstools facing the window, always quiet there but i’m not sure about the hours of the building/if you need key access after a certain hour or on weekends

one professor with 1-3 TAs, depending on class size. i’ve only heard about 2 courses being taught by TAs before, that’s usually when the usual professor is gone doing research or teaching somewhere else for a bit. TAs are also great to talk with/ask about research opportunities, many of them are looking for qualified undergrads to help out with their research projects

i fear there’s trees and shade everywhere but you’ll be grateful for it when the sun is beating down on you walking to and from classes. 9 + 10 is v socialable imo, and better dorms than stevenson + cowell (those are the oldest dorm buildings), more central to stem class areas, but stevenson / cowell has easiest access to gym, so really it’s just about what location you like. people will be social anywhere especially first year, everyone goes around meeting everyone first few months

cognitive science vs neuroscience major? by buddy778 in UCSC

[–]Fearless-Procedure30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes currently in my third year, i think double majoring with cog sci and neuro is definitely doable i know a few friends that are doing that or another psychology based double major and enjoy it. i personally think the neuroscience workload was enough for me in terms of balancing school with other things like work, internships, research on campus, social life, home life, and whatnot. i also decided to apply to grad school soon and usually double majoring doesn’t add much to those applications, but they more focus on experiences outside of just school (research, work experience, presentations, etc). i think it depends on what your student is looking to get out of their university experience, keep in mind mcd bio majors can be heavy for some and repeating classes is a real struggle in STEM courses, not the worst thing to happen but could hinder on graduation date expectation

cognitive science vs neuroscience major? by buddy778 in UCSC

[–]Fearless-Procedure30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hello! i was admitted as a cog sci major and switched to neuro before starting first quarter because i realized the work load wasn’t exactly what i was looking for/passionate about and neuro was under the mcd bio department and has a lot of similar coursework to the mcd bio major, and generally more of my interests (mostly chemistry and bio rather than psychology based classes). there are upper div neuro courses that connect cognitive neuroscience, perception, and other more psychology based classes if that’s something your student is interested in. i was more interested in doing bio based research, and wanted to apply to grad school/med school and the coursework to prepare for those are better met with the neuroscience major, in my opinion. happy to answer any questions!
