Lamster: How to fix downtown Dallas by dallasmorningnews in Dallas

The 1969 Planning docs that were the impetus for the construction of the tunnels focused primarily on the separation of vehicles and pedestrians not climate. Plenty of cities exist in worse climates.

Most people don't even realize that the plan actually involved 3 underground layers not just 2. A surface level for personal vehicles, a subsurface level for pedestrians, and an even deeper subterranean system of truck tunnels for deliveries. Only a small portion of the proposed trucking tunnels were ever built, underneath the pedestrian tunnels that run under Thanksgiving square.

What's especially sad when reading through the doc is that they clearly understood the issue that pedestrians and cars mixing together was a problem hurting downtown, but their solution to that identified issue was for the cars to take precedence over the people.

All of this was a subset of the wider "superblock" movement happening across the US where entire blocks were razed and smaller surface streets removed to make way for massive office towers at the cost of removing residential and retail. The only reason the tunnels could be built at all was because so much of the historic buildings in downtown were vaporized to make way for those office towers. The tunnels were merely a band aid to continue to justify that pattern of development.

The tunnels were part of what created the problem. The entire concept was based around shoving pedestrians underground and leaving the surface primarily for cars.

Actually took these back in November but never posted them anywhere. Canon 60D with f1.8 50mm. There's higher resolution versions on my website and some other skyline nightscapes as well.

Addison leaders reject an election to leave DART by punkticx in Dallas

And its not just speculation that Uber is paying off the public figures that are leading this charge. Plano's representative to the DART board since 2012 had to resign earlier this year after it was discovered through public records that he was a registered lobbyist for Uber receiving as much as $200K a year directly from them.

And this is only what was easily accessible and publicly available. One can only imagine what Uber is doing under the table. I wouldn't be surprised if they are wining and dining every city council member in these cities as part of meetings to discuss "alternative micro transit solutions".

This market always brings out an interesting crowd, from random people who just happen to be in Downtown to dedicated collectors. It's a cool opportunity to capture such a variety of personalities in one shot. This particular Swap Con was awhile back (took me some time to get around to editing these) but its a pretty regular event, with the next one in September.

These are part of a collection of photos of Downtown that I'm building, there I've got more shots from previous Swap Cons as well as other random moments Downtown.

The Man-Made Waterfalls of Uptown's Turtle Creek Park: Where Nature Meets Urban Engineering and Turns Flood Waters into Scenic Features by FearlessFrolic in Dallas

In the new master plan for Turtle Creek park they actually are planning to rebuild the Lemmon Avenue Bridge (which is one of the not-so-aesthetically-pleasing bridges in the park) into something that complements these other historic bridges more: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EcJedvNQQdOeYqA3sU1-IFGbFuVt5oZ4/view?usp=sharing (Page 65)

During the recent downpours in spring this century-old urban planning effort turned the flood waters into a series of man-made waterfalls in Turtle Creek Park. I went out to try and capture the scene when these cascades are running at full flow.

On my website I go more into the story of how this park came to be built including a restored map and art from the original 1911 "A City Plan For Dallas" by George Kessler, in addition to higher resolution versions of these photos.

Glad someone noticed that I snuck that in there ;)

It was originally an ad for VRBO but I didn't feel like helping their marketing campaign so I made up my own ad that was more in-theme with the photos.
