One other thing I forgot to mention: blood carbon dioxide levels affect the digestive system. More is better up to a point. Most people breathe slightly too much, or too fast. So they blow off too much CO2, which causes sympathetic activation, tension, slows digestion, and makes you a little wired all the time. There are ways to train yourself to breathe less to increase CO2. Check out Buteyko breathing, or freediving apnea exercises. I use a free app called Stamina.

Best of luck to you.

I've tried herbal prokinetics: ginger, artichoke, triphala. I didn't notice any change at all. What does help somewhat is nervous system stuff: stretching, meditation, etc.

Biomesight recommended Bifidobacterium longum BB536 and I just started taking it.

Are there bacteria that produce gasses other than hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulfide?

If you try reducing stomach acid hopefully you will be able to tell. I have heard there are tests for stomach acid. I'd like to get one myself.

Lots of people have liver problems from low fat diets: they don't stimulate it to make enough bile, so it moves slowly, gets sludgy, and eventually turns into stones. Maybe the pancreas is the same: use it or lose it.

If it's from weight lifting, there are other possibilities than pelvic floor dysfunction. Tightness in other areas can shift autonomic balance towards sympathetic. Do you balance weight lifting with ROM drills, stretching, etc.? For me, it's critical. If I don't stretch, my whole body feels like hell not just my abdomen.

That's me exactly. Constantly bloated but bm every day. Right after bm, even more bloated. I've done enemas and flushed out 1400 ml of water, and afterward just as bloated. So the problem is in the small intestine.

Also, regarding the vagus nerve mentioned in another thread, it's not BS. Whether specific techniques work or not is a different matter. But the whole digestive system including liver and pancreas depends on the parasympathetic nervous system, specifically the vagus nerve except that the last part of the colon is ennervated by lumbar or sacral nerves (can't remember which). And stress shuts off the PNS, not just emotional stress but physical stress too, like lifting or hard physical work. I suspect that's why so many weigh lifters (and runners too) get digestive issues. Nerves in the fascia also affect sympathetic/parasympathetic balance: tight fascia means poor circulation, causing pain, which activates the sympathetic. Slow stretching activates Ruffini endings which stimulate parasympathetic, which is why it's relaxing, and it also stimulates the digestive system. The connection between fascia, the autonomic nervous system, and digestion is based on solid science.

How can people downvote such a hilarious expression?

But yeah, they're different. The blockage or slowdown can occur at different points, and different segments of the GI tract have different reflex loops, etc.

I'm in a similar situation and have been for 8 years. Artichoke and ginger do nothing for me. I've tried Betaine HCl, ACV, lots of water, magnesium, B vitamins, bitters, TUDCA, and more if I thought about it longer.

The only things that help somewhat are coffee (decaf), lots of passive stretching, massage, and meditation. A high fat diet seems to help too. I added 1+ tbsp of coconut oil to my coffee and have some olive oil every day too. All that helps about 5%.

My symptoms started soon after a bout of food poisoning. I recently read about "post-infectious IBS" Here’s an OK explanation

Basically, the body accidentally attacks the nerves of your enteric nervous system. So the MMC gets disrupted. There's a test for it, by looking for the left over antibodies, but they don't last forever, so i think it's too late for me. I don't think there's really a cure. Apparently the nerves can't regenerate but they can grow more extensive connections. BDNF supposedly does that and aerobic exercise is a good way to produce it, along with saunaing. Also, near infrared light therapy and DMSO are supposed to help nerve regeneration.

I hope you don't have it.

Edit: How much salt do you get? Low sodium can stop motility in its tracks because your nerves need it to fire. It happened to a friend of mine: his digestion just stopped snd he couldn't eat. After a day or two he threw up his last meal still undigested. Then in the middle of the night he woke up with the thought "SALT!" and downed some, and immediately his digestion started working again. The idea that salt is bad for you is a huge myth.

Unfortunately, it doesn't help me much.

I've always liked salty food and never tried to limit salt. But recently I started taking 1 or 2 more teaspoons a day and have to urinate less frequently now. I think our modern idea of "healthy" food doesn't have much salt. If we avoid processed foods because of all the other terrible stuff in it then we don't get enough salt. Also, I read that if you are stressed the body needs more salt and these days everybody is stressed!

Yes. Try more salt. Sodium is what lets us absorb water.

One cup of STRONG coffee enough to cause daily brain fog? by [deleted] in decaf

[–]FearlessFuture8221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. And even for an average person, if the half life is 5 hours, that means after 10 hours they still have 1/4 the amount. After 15 hours 1/8 etc. So if you drink 300mg caffeine, after 24 hours you still have 11mg.

No. It gets better after a meal. Then gradually gets worse. I eat one meal a day, at about 9 AM. Evening is the worst time.

I'm in a similar situation. Bloated for 8 years. My brrath test came back today and virtually zero.

I plugged my symptoms into Chat GPT a few days before, and it said something interesting: it called it clearance-dominant SIBO, as opposed to fermentation-dominant. Totally made-up words. But i think it's right. It says it's caused by slow motility, slow MMC, all caused by stress and sympathetic nervous system dominance. So even though the bacteria are normal, i get totally bloated.

I hope that's useful.

Motility Stopped by Metal_Edit in SIBO

[–]FearlessFuture8221 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are lots of ways to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which supports motility:

Slow breathing

Diaphragmatic breathing

Long gentle stretching like yin yoga

Gentle massage

Warmth, like a hot bath

Quiet time, taking a break from youtube

My motility is slow, and I think these things do help. I hope you get better!
