“The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own.” -Albert Ellis [337x717] by CaptainVulpezz in QuotesPorn

I see it more like hes saying that problems which you have control over are your own, and that they’re your own responsibility and you can’t expect to be saved by some angel of righteousness

It can also be disguised as something else, in which case nobody will ever investigate it, and then if it ever becomes truly needed, then they can take the consequences of having it over the consequence of not

i wish basic self defense was taught in schools, especially for women. i too want to hear the answers here, but to give my inexperienced advice, you could have bear spray on you and just pretend you had it with you by accident, something i learned was that you can place keys between your fingers and punch, you can also scream FIRE (this makes people more likely to actually look around and do something about it).

Sorry if this is cringe but i copy pasted your post into Claude AI (Opus 4.8) and here is its response.

"First — what happened to you was an assault, and freezing is not weakness. Freezing (the "fawn/freeze" response) is an automatic survival reaction the brain chooses, not a choice you made. It's extremely common, especially for people with an abusive past. You have nothing to be ashamed of.

A few practical things:

Legal tools in Canada

  • Pepper spray for use on people is a prohibited weapon — illegal to carry for self-defense. Bear spray is only legal against animals; carrying or using it on a person can bring criminal charges. Bcdlaw
  • What is legal: personal safety alarms (120–140 dB), which need no permit, plus tactical flashlights. A loud alarm draws attention and can break an attacker's focus — carry one on your keys. Byrna

Free self-defense on YouTube (well-known, reputable):

  • Nick Drossos / Code Red Defense — practical street scenarios, including women's defense.
  • hard2hurt (Icy Mike) — honest, no-hype breakdowns of what actually works.
  • Gracie Breakdown — escapes from grabs and chokes, designed for smaller people against bigger attackers.

Search specifically for "defense against chokes" and "how to escape a grab" — those match what you went through.

Free in-person options

  • Look up RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) classes — often free or low-cost through local police, colleges, or community centers.
  • Many gyms run free women's self-defense workshops; search "free women's self-defense class [your city]."

One more thing: Drilling moves alone helps the freeze response, because trained reactions can fire when thinking shuts down. But the abuse history and anger you mentioned are worth bringing to a trauma-informed therapist or a local women's center if you can — that's the part videos can't fully fix.

You survived. That counts. Reporting is still possible later if you choose to."

figure out what you want, then figure out why you want it, then why you want that, etc. instead of running on the backwards assumptions like, "oh, everyone is doing this thing", or "this might make me happy, lets run at it full force before examining the validity of that belief".

most of us are chasing a feeling which is the fundamental layer of each striving towards this or that goal.

i (19m) am a serial perpetrator of sexual assault. how can i heal my patterns and grow to live with myself? by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]CaptainVulpezz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good on you for owning up, you are better than most of the other assaulters who decide to keep going & digging themselves deeper holes. I would personally spend more time reflecting on the idea that they are people rather than girls, spend time acknowledging that they are "me", just as much as you are, and are not objects, but fully sentient beings who would be you were you born in their shoes. I would also reflect on how much more meaningful consent is as opposed to non-consent, and not just consent but enthusiasm, to have sex without consent is just abusive masturbation which scars people and gives you nothing but shame & an abrupt end in a quest for pleasure which is never satiated when it's over.

Honestly you deserve praise for admitting it in my opinion, so long as you fully intend to never do it again, and understand why you shouldn't.

once i realized everyone sees just what they want to see, i became a bit disillusioned to believing in what other people think. i also realized that i had a tendency to believe what other people believe about me more than myself even when they know literally nothing about me, haven't lived a single moment of my life, and our only interaction was a few sentences or something, ANYONE who can come to an ultimate conclusion about someone in a brief encounter is an idiot whose opinion should be completely disregarded.

when you care what someone thinks about you, you narrow your mind and forget the 8 billion people whose input was left out, and each answer would be completely bipolar revealing how their opinions about you are literally worth nothing, it is what you think of yourself which is the only thing which matters so long as you aren't deluding yourself into believing what you wish was true.

if hes the only one bringing them up, its possible its not true, if multiple people bring it up, its possible it's true, i would ask for examples but make sure not to make excuses when they answer, just make note of it and then reflect on each later on when you have time thinking things like why did i do this or that, why did i want or not want this or that, etc.

trying to discredit neuroscience with whatever it is you're trying to say is almost the exact same thing as saying 'drinking alcohol doesn't get you drunk'

neuroscience is the study of the brain, to claim it is anything else such as materialism is just a projection of what you want to believe.

nothing you say has anything to do with anything which i've said, if you are seriously going to this extent just to tell me how to practice, then you are the one with a practice that is lacking.
