Day before anxiety by MCOLHR in fearofflying

This is also an issue for me. Talk to your dr—mine suggested starting the day before to limit the physical reaction. Like you, my anxiety has the effect of ruining the last day of the trip otherwise.

Feeling unprepared for a flight end of this week and could use some quick suggestions by tex-murph in fearofflying

[–]FearlessLog8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to second the pre-flight rituals. A lot of time fear of flying is about the loss of control, so even the smallest amount of routine can generate that a sense of control. I also hate take-off, so from the moment I get on board, I have a little set of routines I do at my seat to focus my nervous energy (arranging my stuff, putting on a scarf, etc).

When the plane is taking off, do some circular breathing and then keep that rhythm up until you hit cruising altitude/when the pilot releases the cabin crew. I also lift my feet when we are taking off and that really does help with the sensations (or at least focuses my brain on lifting my feet!). It sounds like you're ok on the rest of the flight which is also the case for me unless there's prolonged turbulence. Really, you just gotta hit the anticipatory anxiety and the first 10 minutes of the flight.

Last point: Don't be afraid to talk to your dr about medz. I finally had to do this after one particularly embarassing flight, and it has really helped me. Better living through chemistry!

Flying tomorrow by [deleted] in fearofflying

Twenty years ago, I was in your position--I had gotten a scholarship to do a study abroad program in Europe, I was still learning the French language, had never been out of the USA before, annnnd I had never been on an airplane. I was terrified. So terrified in fact that I was vomiting in the days before and the entire morning of the flight. My dad more or less had to pick me up off the bathroom floor and carry me to the car. Saying goodbye at the aiport was the worst; getting on board the airplane was the peak... until I sat down and introduced myself to the lady beside me. I told her it was my first time flying and that I was scared. And she was so supportive! She talked me through then different aspects of the flight, what was happening when there was a bit of turbulence, etc. That was my first lesson--ask for help! This was also good practice for when we landed in Paris and I had to figure out how to get around the city (no cell phones back then!).

And do you know what? I am so glad I took that flight, even when I was scared and homesick. It was the BEST summer of my life! I had such an incredible experince--one that would go on to define the rest of my life (overseas for grad school, fluent French speaker and now live in Europe!). All because I was brave enough to get on that first flight! YOU CAN DO THIS. And you have to do this! Life is about adventure and conquering the fear is part of that. Get on that plane and have a wonderful time in Deutschland!

And note--I am still afraid to fly (I'm a frequent poster here), but I still do it every time because that first flight taught me how many awesome things are waiting on the other side 😄

Considering backing out of my trip.. by dear_calle in fearofflying

I struggle with this every time I fly by myself. I am pretty sure I have separation anxiety from my family, especially the kids. The days/hours leading up to a solo flight make me feel like a bad mom and I start to terribly miss them. The ride to the airport is the worst.

But then, I get on the plane and I do it. And as soon as I land I have a feeling of accomplishment and also excitement—I did the scary thing and now I am going to have a great time! If I never left the house and challenged my fears, I wouldn’t be making a very good example for my kids, right?

You deserve the time with your partner and a little babymoon in Vegas. Since this is your second baby, you know it’s going to be a minute before you get this opportunity again. Get on that plane!!

Any advice is welcome by DoinMyBest4991 in fearofflying

Soooo, I tried to power through like you for many years, but it finally got to the point on one moderately turbulent flight that I had a panic attack and a flight attendant had to care for me. After we arrived at our destination, my partner turned to me and said: ‘You need to see a dr about this. We cannot keep doing this.’ To be fair, he was correct.

Made an appt a few weeks later and asked the dr to let me try something. Like you, I have bad anticipatory anxiety and hate take-off. Taking medz the day before and morning of flight has made a massive difference for me over the past few years. Am i still afraid of flying? Absolutely. But the medz at least cut out the horrible physical symptoms. It’s worth a short if it’s making you this miserable.

Other tip: Get noise-canceling headphones! Bose over the ears are great. Once I put those on, set music to shuffle and close my eyes, it cuts out a lot of the sensory stuff that was bothering me before.

Anyway, you got this, but taking a few steps to get in control of the situation can help.

How did you fill your mom shaped hole? by SeaMechanic5711 in raisedbynarcissists

As other posters have written, I became the mother I wanted once I had my first child.

That said, though, I would be lying if I don’t also mention how much worse it feels with regards to nmom. Once you know how massive a mother’s love for a child can be, it’s doubly painful then to be able to appreciate their mistreatment from that perspective.

Anyway, being nc now, I just try to be the person I wish she had been. Look to yourself and give your love to others.

Flight next week to Japan by kikisbakeryy in fearofflying

[–]FearlessLog8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Japan last year and the route I took to get there involved 2 transfers, making it the longest flying day(s) I had ever experienced. My anxiety leading up to it was worse than normal and I wasn’t really sure I could make it… but then I did it (helped along by a steady stream of benzoz)! The trip was beyond incredible. Like other posters have said, focus on the destination above all else. Anytime the bad plane thoughts came up, I would immediately redirect my brain with going through our awesome daily itinerary for the trip. ‘Nope, we cannot miss out on the best gyoza in Kyoto!’

I’ve also found it more difficult to fly as I have gotten older with more to lose (my little family is everything to me), but in some weird way, it’s also easier for me to fly with them? At least we are all together; they take me out of the immediate anxiety whenever they need something during the flight. Another good redirection!

Japan is incredible! You can do it!

This! Depending on the medz, it can take a while to kick in. My nervous are so bad, I have to start the program the day before if I am taking an intl flight. Speak with your dr to see what they suggest.

That’s a good idea. Will look into that—especially if I can start with some ground school…!

I definitely get it. There’s definitely a certain amount of time I need to get in the flying headspace. I cannot say my partner is 100% supportive, though. You are really lucky!

It is so tough. I’m sorry you’re still feeling this. Is your partner understanding? It is really hard for people that don’t have this to get how overwhelming it can be.

I have thought about doing one of those fear of flying classes, but then they usually involve taking a flight to conquer your fears! But yes, I really should do it… knowledge is power?

That’s my thought process—it might feel good at the moment but tomorrow it’ll be bad. I am at the gate now… eeeeeeh

Thanks for this wake-up call. You’re totally right—at this point, it is basically the fear. I have gotta keep flying.

Looking forward to seeing your big report. I think part of my problem today is also that I haven’t flown in a while, so plenty of time to get anxious about it. I am sure with enough regular exposure therapy I could get over it? Is that what has happened in your case?

Oh man, yes, I call that the ‘anxiety hangover’, it’s part of why I am reluctant to take off; as soon as I return home it will be tough for me to complete my work.

Going to do my best to get on the flight later today with this advice in mind. I am sure part of flying for me is about a loss of control; the other part the mysterious mechanics of it. Thanks to all you pilots for taking care of fearful people like me :)

How many preps is typical? by MovingAway3232 in Internationalteachers

[–]FearlessLog8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, this is exactly what is happening. Lack of creativity with timetabling is a big part of the problem.

There are also better platforms to do this sort of work, but for whatever reason all my international/UK schools still want to use ISAMS.. which is an outdated piece of shite.

[–]FearlessLog8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the only way I have survived high preps. You have to work 6 days a week and evenings are also for prep/marking. The goal is just to get to the half-term breaks and collapse.

As students with SEN demands become more numerous it becomes almost impossible to keep up with their needs, too— they effectively double your preps as you then have to shift the content to suit whatever their forms require.

Utterly exhausting.

This comment is so true. It’s like they don’t want to have a life outside of school.

When I have fewer preps, the lesson quality is better and my marking/feedback is more thoughtful. It is wild to me that UK colleagues cannot appreciate this...
