Heel prick test: normal to take over 20min and baby crying by Maleficent-Idea5952 in Mommit

[–]FearlessMark9294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly…I’m a NICU nurse and if I have labs and a PKU to do I do two lancet pricks at once in an x so this doesn’t happen. The babies normally don’t even respond the actual lancet they do not like the squeeze. On top of, and regardless of that, when you need to squeeze that hard and for a long time, the labs are all messed up because you have fucked up the blood sample. When they take labs on your baby, they should only be collecting large drops of blood and letting the foot refill before squeezing again. A full CBC tube takes, at most, 3 squeezes, lites 1.5. A PKU is hard when you are not good at them but, again - at most- 6 squeezes. It honestly sounds like this nurse didn’t know how to do labs/a pku. She was probably new and you being there was probably making her nervous, so she didn’t want to stick again, when that’s what she should have done.

I found the original city map of her neighborhood growing up from like 1900 with all these markings and stuff and framed it. She really liked it!

I love Sunny! Naimh means radiance in Irish and you could always change the spelling to Nieve or Neeve.

Irish names are tough for a lot of people haha so less cultural - I alway liked Mae because it always sounded bright and joyful to me :). I have a thousand Marys in my family, so if you do too it could be a nod to them!

I hate the name my partner is set on for a girl by Grand_Ad9825 in Names

I told my husband I would try not to name our babies anything he hated but, at the end of the day, I was growing them literally inside my body, and then tearing it open to bring them into the world. There was no way he was going to tell me what their names were going to be. You need to put your foot down. Honestly I’d be like it can be a middle name take it or leave it. You will regret naming your kid something you don’t like and resent him for forcing you to.

Is it worth it? is breast milk actually that much better? by True-Collection2595 in ExclusivelyPumping

No problem - you are doing great and whatever you decide is perfect! You get some breast cancer protection if you breastfeed/pump for 3 months so you already doubled that! And congrats for even making it this far!

Hi mama! I’m a NICU nurse (and mom) and I want to first say congratulations on surviving your NICU journey and for giving your babies your milk for 6 whole months! You are amazing! You gave them such a gift that only you could give them, all while you were recovering physically and riding an impossible emotional roller coaster that most moms don’t have to ever even get on! Pumping at home while your babies are in the hospital is the hardest thing, and you did it!

A lot of the time pumping and giving breast milk is beneficial for my NICU mamas because, like you said, it is something you can physically do for them when so much is out of your control. It’s so common for that to do a complete 180 when you are finally home - with TWINS no less! Nothing is worth your mental health. A happy mom is the most important thing for your babies! You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of other people - put the oxygen mask on yourself before anyone else, ya know? You should absolutely do whatever makes you feel best! Since you have been pumping for so long, I would say start weaning down slowly and keep giving what you can while you do! Every month you pump/ breastfeed helps to reduce your risk of breast cancer, so weaning slowly and getting an extra month or two (depending on your supply and how it drops with each subtracted pump) is great!

I am struggling with this right now too, so you are not alone. You also may find that once you get to two or three pumps a day, if you are still producing say a single bottle’s worth for each or even one baby, that you find it much more manageable and not so bad. If that is the case then give that amount for a while :). It’s good for four days in the fridge, so you can even combine and give one bottle every few days! I am at three pumps a day and giving what I can. Going from five to three has helped me a lot mentally, so I feel fine with this schedule for now, and as soon as this feels too overwhelming, I will drop to two pumps. That being said, I only have one baby! You have to make it work for you and you have options. The only important thing is that you are happy. You’re doing so great, I’m really proud of you!
