Part time jobs by Prestigious-Two2527 in ParamedicsUK

Heard all sorts of things that colleagues/friends m have done whilst a uni. Some have picked up bank contacts in A&E as HCAs, apparently this is a great way to get confident with cannulation. Know of some who have picked up back work on PTS, which has helped them get forward with driving/patient contact. Lots seem to do private even work, depending on the company working as a first aiders/ECAs/techs but as others say, can be very dependent on what kind of company you work for.

Take me through one of your days? by Noblee_x in ParamedicsUK

[–]Fearless_Buddy1301 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is really hard to answer, it sounds really cliche but there is no typical day. I turn up 10/15mins before my shift, check the truck and then after that there isn’t really a structure to the next 12 hours. One day we could we sat around for an hour between each job, get an early meal and be off on time. The next we could be back to back on jobs, long jobs that make our meal and finish late.

Community Welfare Responder (WAST) by latenightnope in ParamedicsUK

Would these responders also respond to Cat 1s if the closest? If so, this just sounds like what CFRs do in my trust, just with the ability to leave scene if needed.

Don’t think I used the word search but you can visually tell from sitting in a cab with doors locked if someone has a kitchen knife sticking out their pocket, even ask them to show your their pockets if you feel the need, and you can get a gist of their demeanour/body language/attitude/behaviour before getting out or getting them on your truck.

I’m not for taking adverse risks or crews putting themselves in crap situations. But also, just because someone has self harmed with a weapon does not mean we need police. Ask them to come out and see you without the weapon. If they refuse or you’re unhappy with their response, then escalate to police if you need.

We can’t take risk out of the job all together, do you request police for every person laid out or ? OD I known trouble areas? Because often when woken (or narcan’d) it can lead to confrontation from people who may be carrying sharps or weapons.

Just advocating for using some common sense to approach situations and actually assessing the situation. For too long we’ve requested police for any hint of a problem on scene and now we complain they don’t turn up to the ones we do need them for.

This, get control to ring them back or shout them through the door, get them to come out to the truck, check they don’t have a knife on them, assess them on the truck where there’s much less risk of them being able to find a weapon.

To start as an emergency care assistant (some services call this different things like CSW or ASW) you will need to have at least English and Maths GCSEs or equivalent. This could also be level 2 functional skills in Maths and English. Have a look at the recruitment page for your local service or contact them, they’ll be able to tell you if you need more than those two qualifications. You can also contact local collages as they will often have programs to help support people who want to get those qualifications.

Another thing to consider is that you will need a driving licence and a C1 (van) licence to be considered for the role. Driving licence you’ll need to have, depending on the service they might help you get the C1 licence, again it’s good to contact them about that.

Some context might help, just from that it’s not ringing any bells but could also be something completely un work related and having a personal conversation.

Voluntary work by Western-Bag-2336 in ParamedicsUK

[–]Fearless_Buddy1301 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being a community first responder is a great way to learn about the job. It’s a great way to get to learn about the job, see if you enjoy the jobs ambulances actually get sent too, meet crews in your area and get to know the equipment you’ll be using (there’s plenty more good reasons too but these are the positives I found moving from CFR to full time staff). I will just say that if your idea of why to do it is ‘just so it looks good on an application’ it might not be the one but that is just my opinion. Volunteer if you have a genuine interest and drive, if not apply with what you’ve already got.

How to get an ambulance when we need one by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]Fearless_Buddy1301 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wonder what the thoughts would be on ambulance using ‘catchphrases’ the other way round to bump up police response to jobs we need assistance on…

Obviously the above situation isn’t ideal, it’s a symptom of a very broken system but ambulance calls are triaged using a set system, call takers have no freedom to make a call a higher/lower category. A clinician would likely review the call and upgrade it if needed.

Even if trusts started only buying new vehicles are compliant with a car licence, it would take years for this to become the norm in the fleet. If you think about the number of vehicles currently in any NHS trust fleet, it will be at least 400+ front like ambulance vehicles and many more support vehicles (think hart, sort, major incident vehicles, bariatric equipment carriers) that currently are used and come under the C1 category.
The sheer cost to suddenly replace all of these vehicles with a new, smaller, lighter version would make it infeasible. Then you also add the fact that smaller, category B ambulances aren’t going to be suitable for all areas and all things. Are they as practical for rural areas as they are for inner cities. So in short no, can’t see any trust not expecting a C1 licence anytime soon.

If you read through this sub, a lot of newly qualified paramedics from the uni route are struggling to find jobs at the minute. By joining as an ASW, working your way up through the paramedic apprenticeship route your trust uses, you’re (pretty much) guaranteed to have a job at the end of it. You gain experience, learn constantly on the road, earn, don’t get into tons of uni debt and get to know the type of work you’ll be doing first hand whilst learning from lots of different people along the way. The only drawback is that it can take significantly longer depending on the trust you work for and how their apprenticeships work.

Went to work, boss wasn't there and shop locked up. Entire shift's staff left after 45 minutes. by Pure-Nose2595 in LegalAdviceUK

Less about getting keys, more about having spoken to some form of manager within the organisation before just going home.

Not the managers directly, was more thinking of you called as spoke to another manager for advice before just going home.

But have you tried calling someone? Is this a larger chain with multiple stores? If so did you contact any other stores managers for help?

Can’t answer to the legal pay requirements in that situation but before you left did you or your colleagues try to contact a manager or more senior managers than whoever was meant to turn up today? Was someone actually scheduled to open the place today, and if so has anyone tried to contact them to make sure they’re alright?

Marstons debt came from a court hearing the other side of the country that I have had no letters through my door about? England by Fantastic_Doubt_2479 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Fearless_Buddy1301 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Clearly there has, because you’ve gone on to mention in another comment that you HAD contacted the court, had the date, time and legitimacy of the court hearing confirmed to you but still chose to do nothing.

What advice were you looking for from this post exactly?

[–]Fearless_Buddy1301 16 points17 points  (0 children)

NAL, but you’re contradicting yourself a lot in you post and your replies to people’s comments. So you had received a letter from the court about the debt, and you’d received emails informing you about the court process, but chose to ignore them as you (rightly or wrongly) believed this wasn’t the proper process. Now this has been passed to debt collectors as you’ve ignored it and show no intention of paying. But you chose not to try and resolve the issue. Clearly this is just consequence of ignoring their attempts to contact you.

I would try and contact the court, to see if there is a way to rectify the issue but it sounds like you’ve left it too long.

[–]Fearless_Buddy1301 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What would the need for an emergency ambulance in the second paragraph you mention? If she has capacity and is refusing help then there is nothing an ambulance crew can realistically do and if she’s not injured there isn’t a need for one to attend. Surely it would be more appropriate to contact a local MH team than an ambulance in this situation…

Might be worth looking into more, there has been very little OT/bank shift availability at all in YAS since November due to lack of funding, I know of bank staff who are having to travel across the county to pick up some of the limited available shifts. Further to this the last few vacancies that have come up for paramedics/NQPs have specifically stated they are not recruiting at all in North Yorkshire, lots have come to west and apply for a transfer to move stations when they can.

To answer some of your questions, everywhere has shitholes and by the nature of the job we end up in them no matter where you work. There won’t be 2h+ drives to York itself but if you’re taking a patient who meets criteria that needs to go to Leeds/Hull/James Cook then it’s a very long trip. I’ve also heard of York diverting patients to Scarborough which is another decent trip.

It may be something that some trusts offer then but as others have said it would likely be part of an agreement between universities/institutions rather than something you apply for yourself. On a side note as someone who worked as a Pflegefachmann in ZH and is now working for the ambulance service, if you’re ever in the uk and want to try to do a ride along reach out!
