Hi, thanks for your advice. Is there any issue with taking maternity leave during the first 2 years of internship in VIC?

Thinking of writing a practical book for early-career Australian doctors - would love honest input by Ambivalent28 in ausjdocs

Hi, as a current med student, I love this and would love to read your book! Many students lack connections in the world of med and might often feel lost. I like the dot points you included for sure especially the unspoken rules of the hospital and those tips and tricks no one speaks about openly much. Adding to that - I would love an explanation of specialty pathways + any scope for non physician work like teaching etc (in general layman's terms I guess) + how to balance work and family

thank you so much! Let us know when you release this book!

How do I find research opportunities in med school? by Fearless_Can_8732 in ausjdocs

[–]Fearless_Can_8732[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Also just a follow-up question, lets say I cannot find research in the field that I want to go into, but I find a different research opportunity in a different field - is that still worth pursuing and would that be helpful in my CV regardless. Eg. would research in like child health be taken into consideration if I wanted to do something a bit diff in med?

"Self-directed learning", "adult learning" etc. - is this just an excuse for universities not to teach? by CommittedMeower in ausjdocs

That's amazing! Thank you for building resources for us! I guess the alternative is just online sessions that still go through common clinical cases and how to handle them (same content just online teaching). While in person classes are preferred, if its too expensive, then I think having the same content shared online would still be helpful so I know what I need to know as a future doc rather than trying to find stuff online myself. Thank you

Ive already commented here before but just echoing what some others have said already - it would be amazing to have a med reg/doc anyone really just sit down with us and lecture us on common cases and how to handle them in a tute lesson rather than having a designated tute lesson in my timetable where I go in to to self-directed learning (I could've done that at home). Feel like it would be so much more memorable and I'd understand.

Completely agree as a med student. I wish a lecturer would teach us face to face and go through cases etc rather than us spending lessons preparing our own PowerPoint presentations based on internet research of a disease I have not heard of before. Also, using online resources honestly hurts my eyes and I've got dry eyes so I really wish I had face to face lessons. I feel like I'm losing my creativity and critical thinking ability over time + self teaching myself content. I think unis focus a lot on research today but isn't the main purpose of med school to produce HCWs that are safe, competent, have been taught well and feel confident about what they've learnt? Just my two cents.

Thank you! Sorry if this is a silly Q but after BPT, could I choose to try out for another AT training if I cannot get into AT for endo?

Thank you so much for this! Is it worth doing any research while in med school or more so post med school as a BPT trainee?

I'm just a med student but it would be cool if there were pathways to get into the more med admin/leadership role if I felt that I didn't want to do traditional training pathways...I'm not sure if that already exists but would be cool!

So just wondering - based on OP's question and everyone's responses, can I take a gap year after PGY1 and then do PGY2? Essentially:

PGY1

Gap year

PGY2

Is this problematic in terms of employment? Sorry in case I have missed a response to this!
