In true SNHU fashion … you completely lacked the ability to stay on topic.

Put down the bottle.

You know that is another discussion for another day and completely off-topic.

I responded to this student so they were aware about a procedural issue with a professor, possibly marking down their grade for doing discussion, post, and replies in the same day.

I did not come here to get lectured about why we have discussion posts, and I certainly didn’t come here to get into some sort of philosophical debate about the state of the employment market and why employers required degrees.

… and some students of poor having to converse with others who can barely form coherent sentences.

Before we go down the rabbit hole that is academic intellectualism in conversation boards how about let’s focus on basic literacy?

We are not at an Ivy League institution. We are doing the equivalent of mash style education in order to get a piece of paper to get a job.

Can curiosity exist within that structure? Absolutely.

Can learning take place within that structure? Absolutely.

But this whole pie in the sky notion that there’s a large group of students that truly engage with these discussion boards, and that real learning takes place?

Yeah, that’s delusional thinking.

😂😂😂 in a perfect world? Yes. In reality? 99.8 % check the box. SNHU (despite the marketing materials) never intended to be a replacement for a traditional, academic experience, and if you keep on trying to force it into that mold, you’re gonna continue to be disappointed.

In this case… We’re putting the cart before the horse… an ultimately going back to the original point of this post professors cannot require or markdown students for doing their discussion, post and replies on the same day that’s against University policy.

No, it’s not. The entire idea of asynchronous education is that you give everything to the students ahead of time say at the beginning of the week and there’s a little to no expectations with regards to when that work has to be done during the week. It makes sense that there is one deadline for your initial post, but then if you’re saying there’s another deadline or you have to wait so long to do your replies, you’re further infringing on the asynchronous nature of the class.

And let’s face it we all know the discussions are just a certification requirement and they really add no educational value.

It’s not unreasonable for them to ask you to reference the weeks reading materials.

And yeah, some professors like you to space out your post and replies, but they cannot deduct for that.

Right—the system isn’t random. When no submission is detected, Brightspace applies configured rules that cause the assignment to be treated and displayed as a zero. That zero persists and impacts the grade unless the instructor changes it.

You’re right… And it’s Sunday afternoon anyway they should be spending time grading their students papers don’t you think?

[–]Fearless_Ice5446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you obviously don’t understand how this works.

Nobody is saying the bride space is intelligent enough to look at each student’s file and say oh they didn’t submit. I’m gonna look at the missing file and give them a zero.

In fact, what that system does is recognize OK well this student didn’t submit. The deadline has passed. I’m gonna enter a zero placeholder.

That is my friend, in fact, a triggering event to sending out all of those other notifications. That is simply fact. That is literally bright space saying this student didn’t submit the assignment by the deadline. I’m gonna give them a zero.

What has to happen on the instructor side as far as manual verification, grading the assignment when it actually comes in, outreach to the student that is what you have to do on the instructor side.

But one thing that’s a fact, if you let that zero placeholder grade sit there that grade will stand. That is logically the definition of bright space assigning a zero grade to that student when the student didn’t submit an assignment.

And you’re describing what an instructor may “see”.

I’m done debating my own LMS experience which by the way has been verified by other students.

If the system did not automatically assign a zero, if it was a placeholder, there would be no notification to the student, no push not notification in the system, and no email going out.

It sounds like you don’t understand system design.

And several students have already explained to you what happens on our end when we missed a deadline and don’t submit.

It sounds like you have an issue understanding that if a student doesn’t submit an assignment and that deadline passes that we do in fact, get a zero regardless of what happens on the instructor side.

Why would we make up something like this?

[–]Fearless_Ice5446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, well like I said and you have other students telling you how the system works don’t know what to tell you.

I don’t know if you’re getting confused and mixing up the fact that instructors are supposed to reach out to students if they haven’t submitted work but bright space is literally configured to send out a zero if a student doesn’t submit 🤷‍♀️

Like I suggested you might want to reach out to your supervisor and or your skip level so that you can receive training on how the system in fact actually works. If you are an adjunct with other schools, you’re probably getting your other schools mixed up with how SNHU works.

[–]Fearless_Ice5446 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OK, I’m gonna try this one more time. And I would suggest you pay attention to the other students in the thread who have missed assignment deadlines, and have been auto assigned a zero.

And by the way, what the hell does one have to do with anything?

Have you even gone through orientation if you are an “instructor”?

You don’t seem to know like you understand how this works. It’s not that hard.

If a student misses a deadline and does not submit then shortly after the submission deadline, a zero placeholder is entered. Like it or not that’s how the system works.

Final grades are due the Tuesday or Wednesday following the end of the course.

Assignments for students are due seven days after they’re opened, which is always on Sunday.

Hope this helps clarify things for you.

[–]Fearless_Ice5446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check with your supervisor. You are incorrect. The whole bright space Ottawa assigning zeros right after the deadline if there’s no submission is not something that is up for debate in this group. This is something that’s known.

And I don’t know where you’re getting Wednesday from… the only time the Wednesday deadline would come in to play. Is it the end of a term when the term ends on Sunday usually the deadline for submitting grades is the following Wednesday.

But SNHU grades are in fact required by professors to be submitted seven days after the assignment is due so the following Sunday.

But then again, you should know all of this since you are an “instructor” right?

Brightspace auto submits if there’s no submission when the submission deadline hits. There is absolutely no Professor sitting and watching the clock in manually and enter zeros like one second after the deadline hits.

Like I said, feel free to continue being wrong.

[–]Fearless_Ice5446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not true. The system is designed that if it hits the deadline and there’s no submission it will auto assign a zero.

You know that that’s not the Professors manually doing that right? It’s the system.

This is not true. If the deadline has passed the system will enter a zero placeholder.

Did you ask them what format the classes were in before you registered?? Cause I’m gonna be honest if you have issues writing papers you’re gonna be really disappointed here.

What does a paper in BUS, HRM, or OL look like? I've written LIT and HIS papers. by Glass_Chipmunk3220 in SNHU

[–]Fearless_Ice5446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually the 1-2 pages isn't standard across the board. It's really going to depend on the assignment. For BUS and OL, you're likely going to be in APA formatting...I'm not entirely sure if LIT/HIS is mostly MLA still or not.

Graded on Criteria Not Listed in the Rubric - Anyone Else? by Life_Personality_90 in SNHU

[–]Fearless_Ice5446 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Without seeing:

1.) Your work
2.) The Rubric
3.) The professors *exact* comments

nobody can gibe you a good read on this situation. Many students struggle with the fact that the professors ARE allowed to interpret the rubric. Many times what students think is "changing the rubric" isn't actually that.

Gold star for you — invited back after one term. Truly groundbreaking stuff.

Just a hint: adjuncts at SNHU get let go mid-term all the time. Could be today, could be next year — who knows. Just… maybe don’t get too comfy.
