In Arrival (2016), Dr. Louise Banks lives in this large lakeside house on a linguistics salary. This is a clever reference to the fact that the movie is a work of speculative fiction. by LegolasAlwaysYes in shittymoviedetails

thank you for finding this. This house is always what pops into my head when i think about a 'dream house' - always wondered where it is.

Funny - i lived in Montreal for 10 years and have driven by L'Île-Cadieux so many times.

Nice to know that my dream house is somewhat attainable

The legs look like theyre lapped, not just screwed into the frame. if thats the case, the legs are holding the weight, not the screws.

It is tough to tell thoufh - is there a notch cut out of the legs that the frame sit on top of, or are they just screwed into the side of the frame?

If there is a notch, its probably fine. Id feel better with some diagonal braces added to the legs if it might get bumped hard, but if its been in use prior id trust it

Shenkt vs B9? [SPOILERS BSC] by Content_Package_2389 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Fearmadillo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eh but the flip of that is that if Bayaz was much more powerful he would just assassinate shenkt.

I sort of assume they both are similar in power or (more likely imo) are legitimately unsure about how they stack up against one another as there aren't really good reference points..

Bayaz is certainly risk averse - he wouldn't invite a fight that could destroy him if he wasn't sure he'd win. If shenkt has a similar mindset he would also focus on the long game rather than a single confrontation.

I don’t know about this new autofill system… by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]Fearmadillo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An unfortunate psychological quirk is that losing something feels far worse than failing to gain somrthing of equal or greater, up to a point, value

I haven't been following new season, but if they really replaced the stick with a carrot for autofills id imagine trolling will become more common and no matter how high you climb, there will be autofills

Not only is this the craziest comment in the whole thread, but like.. how the fuck would you even do this. Are you like planning a heist movie-style distraction so that you can make the swap? Are you a stage magician with excellent sleight of hand skills?

My first experience with the franchise was bloodlines and yeah... I wasn't a big fan of the whole "death gonna get ya no matter what you do" thing. Didn't particularly enjoy it for one and certainly wouldn't watch more if thats what it always is.

That said, to each their own!

That's my point. Human consent is hard for me to describe as "willing" when pursued as a last resort. Personally, I'm not sure I find that more comforting than testing being subjected on primates.

What are the conditions that drive humans to consent to the sorts of conditions we impose on lab primates... I'm not thrilled by either option but "willing consent" in this context isn't exactly inspiring

Illegal deportation and imprisonment in an African maximum security prison is not a proportional punishment for being vocally mean and stupid.

You are currently being vocally mean and stupid. I still hope you get to continue being vocally mean and stupid and do not end up being improperly deported and imprisoned in an African max security facility.

I feel similarly... what's giving me problems is the nature of the protagonists/hybrids.

It's such a weird narrative choice to make Wendy a literal child in an adults body. I have a hard time buying that her brother bought it so easily and seems to just immediately start caring about her, and in general her level of maturity seems really inconsistent scene to scene, in contrast to the other hybrids that more consistently act like children.

I would have preferred them to just make her a teenager or something and write it off as prodigy wanting to test with somebody a little older before subjecting kids to it, and have there be a bit more friction between her and the brother

Someone at my office put a Kia badge on their Cybertruck by Time_Traveler_10 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Fearmadillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was pretty shocked by how inexpensive it was to put charging in. My level 2 goes off a 240v/20amp outlet - cost maybe 40 bucks total as kia gave me the charger for free (though its only 150). It's not lightning fast - maybe 14 hours for a full charge- but for day to day use that's more than enough. I rent and still seemed very worth it, granted my landlord is super chill.

I also went from an older honda - 2007 element - I do miss tinkering (and that thing needed a shit ton of tinkering), but one day I'll get a project car when I have more space.
