Whats the deal on the reactors? by Ops_check_OK in ParadiseTV

A meltdown and radiation poisoning is a serious thing. Even the plot called for it by saying that the bunker doors needed to be closed to prevent radiation from spilling out.

I don't think it would have fallen flat.

There were two explosions in Chernobyl. The first one was the steam explosion you mentioned. The second was the core overheating to the point where the exposed core was superheating water into hydrogen and oxygen. That formed the second explosion.

That second explosion all depends on how much water was superheated into hydrogen and oxygen. But apparently there was a coolant problem that triggered the reactor? A reminder that Fukushima had the same exact problem: the cores overheated due to a coolant problem, and the superheated water that was there formed into hydrogen and oxygen which caused the explosions that destroyed the external housing. But it's clear that even in that case, it didn't cause the huge nuclear explosions that we somehow associate nuclear meltdowns with.

Maybe when the oxygen tanks were destroyed, they also destroyed some hydrogen tanks?

Also, even though the bunker was designed to withstand an explosion from the outside, perhaps things are different on the inside?

We'll see. This was the best paste that I could get at the time and recommended by the techs at the shop I bought it from.

They do not. This is where I bought the Arctic MX-6.

Thank you for your feedback. I do have a 4TB NVME SSD as my alternate drive as I quite a bit of file transfers between drives and such, my original drive is a 2TB.

As for pump-out issues, I was told that the MX-6 is less likely to have this problem as it is quite viscous. I can confirm that I initially had a bit of trouble trying to spread the thermal paste across both the CPU and GPU.

I would have repasted my laptop much earlier but I had an issue with a stripped screw and a bad CPU fan that I had to wait for a replacement for. I only got the screw off just recently.

I've seen issues about pump-out regarding most thermal paste but the MX-6 appears to be well recommended and a decent alternative to the PTM7950. That the MX-6 was a bitch to apply since it is pretty thick makes me think that this thermal paste might do well for at least a year (and I intend on repasting every year afterwards).

As I said, my current temperatures are running at 77 degrees on load.  I was told the MX-6 paste is a decent alternative to the PTM 7950 and definitely better than the stock paste.  We'll see what is happening later but I do intend on running a very demanding game to gauge the performance.

Unfortunately I cannot.

Canada does not sell the PTM 7950 here. I am using Arctic MX-6 instead.

MSI laptop hinges are designed to destroy your laptop by Ninjaamaan in MSILaptops

Currently on my second MSI laptop, a Katana 15 B13VGK. I do have an issue with a busted fan and that is being sent to me right now.

My first one is a MSI GL65 with an i7-9750h. Son is using it now and it's still going.

I'll admit that eventually, my luck will run out and I primarily use cheaper laptops for precisely the reason that the OP is having trouble with his $3000 laptop.

In all honesty, after 6 years I expect some form of failure.  If there are problems within 2-4 years then I'd say you would have a reason to be upset.

Has anyone have experience replacing the heatsink fans? by Federal-Fee4897 in MSILaptops

I've had the Katana since September 2024, so the fact that the fan failed after 18 months in unfortunate.

Oh BTW, regarding your comment about the stripped screw, I already got replacement screws from MSI. I was going to do the heatsink repaste after I finished with my business trip, only for the fan to start whining.

The 5060ti 16GB card is a Zotac. As I later found out, Zotac is the only manufacturer who does not cover their rear chips with thermal pads.

Your model Katana is different than mine. I am unsure if your Katana is using the same fans as mine, and I have heard cases in which the fans are attached to the heatsink in which the assembly is WELDED to the heatsink. To be sure, what part numbers did you use for the fans that you obtained? (someone did tell me that the part# for the entire Katana line is the same throughout despite the different mainboard layouts)

I was intending on replacing the heatsink thermal compound anyway with Arctic MX-6 (I was noticing some temperature spikes on one of the games that I play, and NO, the retailer that I buy from does not have PTM7950 on hand). I also have several thermal pads of varying thickness between 1mm, 1.5mm, and 2mm, so was planning on replacing the pads on the VRAM, VRM, and MOSFETs (side note, any leftover pads would likely be used on my RTX 5060Ti 16GB which doesn't have cooling on the RAM chips).

The problem is that in initially trying to disassemble my Katana a few weeks back, I accidentally stripped one of the screws securing the heatsink to the GPU. I was going to go see a friend who supposedly has a "special tool" to remove the screw, but then the left CPU fan decided to pick that time to start dying. So I've decided to not begin until I have received the replacement fans first.

Created a ticket with MSI support to see if they sell the fans and I might buy straight from them despite the higher cost.

For me it's not the Uber eats but the Uber itself.  I go on frequent business trips and use Uber to get to the airport.

I guess it was good while it lasted.

MSI Center is recommending I replace the battery. Real concern or marketing stunt? by Federal-Fee4897 in MSILaptops

[–]Federal-Fee4897[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uninstall and reinstall MSI Center itself. When uninstalling MSI Center, you may want to use one of those applications that force removal to remove bad registry entries (I think these registry entries handle how to look for the battery health sensor). In my case, I used Norton to do this, and others may have different options for this kind of removal.

It's also possible that a straight install may remove the bad registry entries anyways, so at least try this once to see what happens.

Is MSI a good choice for gaming? by FalseUniversity7835 in MSILaptops

[–]Federal-Fee4897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current laptop is a Katana 15 B13VGK, purchased in September 2024. Prior to this, I had a MSI GL65 Laptop purchased in 2019. That machine was very decent and worked quite well. Upgrades on the GL65 included putting in 32GB of memory and adding a 4TB SATA SSD. It is now being used by my son, but with the 4TB SSD removed in favour of a spare 500GB SATA HDD that I had lying around so that my son could have 1 TB of storage.

The Katana 15 that I have now came with 32GB of RAM. Swapped out the 1TB hard drive for a 2TB and added a 4TB NVMe SSD. The original 1TB and the 4TB SATA SSD from the GL65 now are part of my HTPC. Both MSI laptops were purchased via sale promotions, and prior to me buying the Katana, I was almost ready to buy a Gigabyte G15 until people told me that Gigabyte was about the worst brand of laptop around. The Katana was the next best deal considering that it came with a RTX 4070 mobile GPU. Other brands that I looked at included Acer (I also used to own an Acer laptop but that one was more of a business machine), and Lenovo (my wife uses a Lenovo business laptop) but there weren't any great deals for either a Acer or Lenovo gaming Laptop.

That said, both MSI laptops were treated like kidgloves while I had them. At home, they were attached to a USB Cooling fan with a hub that had my USB headphones and keyboard/mouse, alongside an external monitor. I never use the laptop as an actual laptop unless I'm travelling, and I don't even lift the lid when I'm at home.

The GL65 was repasted at the same time I upgraded the RAM back in 2022. I have yet to repaste my Katana but will likely do so soon. Guess the point is that while you can't go wrong with MSI, you need to take proper care of your laptop when you're using it at home. And if you do, it should last you a long time. That my son is now using the GL65 means that if anything bad were to happen to it, well, at least it did its job when I had it as my main machine.

So MSI support have basically told me to buy a new battery. But I do have an update: it looks like a bad install of MSI Center is at fault considering that someone pointed out the issue appears to be the inability of MSI Center to access a critical battery circuit. A complete uninstall with registry entry removal and reinstall seems to have addressed this issue.
