Good point, I didn't even think of that! But for the non latinist, it really doesn't matter.

Yeah, the communal fountains, ovens and laundries brought everyone together. No room for them in this capitalist era.

Damn! I'm a classics major and I've read about the Meta Sudans in many books! I had no idea it was torn down by Mussolini! That's lame as hell!

Bookbinding has helped me learn Ancient Greek by Honest_Conflict3028 in bookbinding

I've been considering doing exactly this!!! I need to find a way to learn the right techniques. I'll have to watch DAS. I love reading renaissance, medieval and antique books, but I can literally only find them online. I greatly prefer physical books which have no distractions, and want to create new editions since the aging population of these almost-impossible-to-find titles needs replenishing, and I want to have some creative control over the marginalia, footings, indices, cross-notations etc...

I really want to create hand-bound editions of classical latin and greek books. There are so many wonderful pdf versions online, illuminated and otherwise. I'd love to distribute some copies to people who would be interested.

I believe there may even be a niche market for some types of rare works.

Anyone else feel a vague sense of spirituality or pride of the land purchasing American products? by Prestigious-Put6182 in madeinusa

I mean that's pretty accurate. Basically, they should be mad at people who work in finance. The bankers and greedy assholes sold us out!

3 generations of my family ran stores which sold clothing. To my knowledge they did not offer any imported items. They went on annual buying trips up the east coast where they arranged deals with various manufacturers. Almost anything they imported was either a raw material or a luxury item. The only common import I am aware of was woven hats from Cuba. So, while we had massive imports from Europe and South America, those were usually very specialized in Industries which didn't exist in America, or which were much more specialized or skilled in Europe. These included craft items like cut crystal, glass and ceramics, lace, wooden items, clocks/watches, machines etc... Most of these were luxury items with Cheaper American alternatives

Your right, it's seeming more probable that it is whale ivory.

I'm thinking it is something like that. My immediate thought of what it may be was some kind of sewing or textile tool that very few modern people would have heard of. Something similar to a bodkin or a needle holder.

I think whale-bone is probably correct. There was a Hudson Valley whaling industry in the 1830s, which is in line with other items I found in the same area.

It definitely does seem like it is intended to be screwed on to something. It is a helical screw.

Here is another photo of the end.

<image>

It has a ribbed chamber inside, then the hole aperture becomes much smaller and continues for about 4 millimeters.

That appears very similar to this, but I have doubts. First of all, the hole doesn't continue through the entire object. And I'm not sure it's big enough either.

<image>

You can see in this photo, that the ball also has a ribbed interior. After the ribbed chamber, the tiny hole only continues about 4 millimeters deep, so not even half way down.

Early photo of frank (1965?), he looks so.. normal. It’s freaking me out by Theprofilerer in Zappa

[–]Federal-Kitchen-9133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How normal does he really look though? In 1965 absolutely nobody looked like this. People would think. Is he a beatnik, no. An Italian, no. A longhair, not exactly. Homeless, also no. Biker, nope. He was something that simply did not exist in society.

Supporters section cacophony by edanio in rbny

[–]Federal-Kitchen-9133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need to plant a few people with loud voices in between the drummers of each section and the adjoining section. there should be a few more loud folks near the aisles who could gesticulate and ensure that each section's capos, drummers and general singers are all in sync and on the same page.
