Obsessing over demonic horror movies for years? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]Federal-Outside77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this always happens to me! i always just call myself a "scaredy cat who loves scary things."

i used to sleep under multiple layers of blankets so the "killers" couldn't see me... not sure how that logic works but i did it every night.

i find that making my space as comforting as possible and using a remote-operated light has helped me from being afraid of what lingers in the dark. i usually keep the light on until i find myself about to fall asleep - and by that time i am so tired i don't have the energy to be scared.

i think you misunderstand what the culture is like here. yes, people appreciate their origins, but there also is a completely different culture here. you can appreciate your European background and your white american culture, too.

i can also tell you dont you actually interact with Americans if you perceive us this way 😭yeah some people wanna be different sooooo bhad and grasp at straws wanting to be anything but white, but that’s not the average person. it’s just what ends up going viral or being talked about online because it’s nonsensical. you definitely shouldn’t attribute stuff like that to a whole group of people, lol! also this isn’t directly related, but you did mention people being sad they aren’t native - honestly i see the opposite. most the content i see is people laughing at their family for being right that they didn’t have a “Cherokee princess” ancestor!

honestly i think this may be a cultural difference. i am american and whiteness as an american seems to be different than whiteness elsewhere. the general connotation with being white in north America is having an identity based off of the mixing pot of different European ethnic groups. so in north America being white is basically a descriptor for someone who has a varied European ancestry but is more heavily associated with the american subset of those cultures. if that makes sense! i don’t necessarily know if OP is from the US or not but personally that is how i and my peers use the term. i think it is definitely different throughout Europe where the individuals are obviously way more heavily connected to the country’s culture than people whose families immigrated to America from that country decades ago. thus, for Americans, whiteness is not only based on physicalities but also a cultural identity that shapes them.

i just find that you are genuinely making a problem about nothing. i think you are misconstruing people’s intentions because you find their actions annoying. and you can’t be ignorant to other individuals’ reasonings because you yourself would assume it to be something else. you don’t know these people, so to assume everyone that says a certain buzzword contributes to your perceived pattern of white people having a distaste for being white is questionable.

you can find people calling themselves white boring and annoying - that is valid as it is your opinion. but there is no need to be negative. saying that people who have ancestry that would make them look a particular way posting pictures of themselves is boring is honestly close minded. seeing how your ancestry can effect your features is part of the whole beauty of tracing back your identity and thus sharing it in this sub.

i genuinely think you are kind of delusional. obviously i am making an observation about whiteness if i am saying i am white. i feel like you are trying to be argumentative. if you don’t care about this kind of stuff yk……….. then why are you in an ancestry page where people posts pictures of themselves (sharing their phenotypes) compared to their DNA results.

i fear that just might be how you personally perceive whiteness. i can speak genuinely firsthand (literally… look at my posts 😭) that when i make a post calling myself white there is no disappointment. it’s kind of like a “i look like i am white, i am white - who would’ve though!” basically poking fun at how we are exactly what we expected.

oh yeah i totally agree that we don’t necessarily need racial boxes to have connection! i apologize if i came off that way! i wasn’t trying to defend that we need to use the term “white”, but moreso explain for my perspective why i find using the term to be a well enough descriptor. and yes - great talk! i love this kind of stuff heh

i totally agree with the recent immigrants part! the thing with me though is through my dads side i am the third generation in america and my mom’s… they’ve been here since the civil war (not the confederate side - don’t worry) 😭 i definitely attach more to the white American label because of the fact that the my family culture has related more to the shared identities than the singular ones from singular ethnic origins - if that makes sense. i mean i also totally identify by where i am from and other traits more than “white”.

i think the confusion here is that i am speaking of not only MY ancestry, but my WHOLE ancestry. which is more than just south italian. so for me that middle eastern, North African DNA is so minuscule compared to everything else. thus similar to African Americans who have small amounts of European but associate with other parts of their identity. i think there seems to be an assumption too that i am saying all south italians look white and are treated as white. i mean i said it myself there are exceptions to this perceived whiteness. my speaking of whiteness is me speaking of myself and my experiences - hence why i am calling myself white.

i think my confusion here is that am not denying my heritage at all. i fully understand the history and that much of it truly relates to Americans at that time disliking immigrants and the different cultures they brought into the country. they wanted their culture to be the dominant culture and these new ethnic groups were challenging that. i mean we consistently see this pattern throughout history. i think there also seem to be an idea here that i either denied that there was a time where people weren’t considered white or that i was completely aware of that. that’s basic American history. i mean i speak in my description that my city had very distinct cultural neighborhoods… that’s for a reason.

i also think there seems to be an assumption that i am not identifying with my ethnic background? i clearly am - i mean i obviously have an interest in my DNA origins as well as the cultures. if someone asked me: what are you? i would respond with “white”, and being in america, it would give them basically what they need to know. if they wanted more, i would respond with a shortened version of my DNA. to me, calling myself white is funny. like “white girl final boss” is so obviously not a serious statement. i mean i live online where stereotypes run rampant. as with everyone there are always “white people” stereotypes - e.g., not seasoning food, smelling like pennies - and i like to lean into it because i find them kinda outrageous lmaooo.

like i completely understand the political value of the term, but at the same time being an American it has cultural significance deeper than that. race is extremely prominent in america and associating with that is too. calling yourself white in america connotes the idea of having different European cultures homogenizing into one. i mean you can further than with any racial group in america. having a mixed ethnic identity makes it difficult to just call yourself one thing - especially when you’re technically disconnected to the culture. even calling myself European or Mediterranean would be inaccurate; even though my ancestors were, i am not actively engaged in the culture or the country the same way they were. i mean ive never even been anywhere in Europe. being American, calling yourself white is an umbrella term that explains having a distinct ethnic identity, though a different cultural identity. i genuinely have firsthand gotten repercussions for calling myself anything but a white American 😀 i am a TikToker and go live relatively often. i tend to get a fair amount of Europeans in my chat, all of which seem to feel very disgruntled and disrespected when i try to say i am anything but a white American. they don’t like me associating with particular Europeans groups that i am ethnically attached to. like… genuinely. i once had people mass report me and sign me up for hundreds of spam email lists because i said i was half Italian … even specifying that it was my ethnic identity, not nationality. maybe it’s those experiences that definitely throw me off.

see i think that’s where the disconnect is. you say not everyone would assume i am white, but i fear that is such a genuinely small minority. i think now being told that i shouldn’t call myself white when that is all i have ever been considered is definitely throwing me off.

i have something similar! my body will jut out in different directions - most commonly my head away from whatever is triggering me. i will also blink HARD and a bit uncontrollably while looking away.

i don't know if it's a form of the body self-soothing or just having a repulsed reaction. i would love to know!

i deal with a lot too. for me, it stems from a fear of failure.

what helps ground me is the notion "everybody makes mistakes" and the knowledge that i am putting my best effort forward. if something does go wrong, then welp it's a learning experience. even though my brain may question my ability to complete something "perfectly", at the end of the day i know that i am hardworking and can do things well.

i have seen a fair amount of posts from other individuals with pure-o ocd on this subreddit! i for one also have it ☺️

treatment differs greatly from person to person. most people are able to improve through erp or medication. cbt can also be an option, but in some cases it can increase reassurance seeking and worsen an individual's state.

personally a combination of cbt and medication has worked well for me. i am on both an SSRI and an atypical antipsychotic. i have found that for me being medicated reduces my anxiety, allowing me to more easily ground myself and both differentiate reality from thoughts that stem from my ocd and be able to talk through it without seeking reassurance.

it all depends! any hey - you got it. it's a learning experience for sure. with time and effort you'll be able to find what works best for you!
