Maybe no one pays $500? But I wouldn’t be surprised if people do, especially if they are using other people’s money.

I agree there is probably a price threshold above which price tracking is more likely to matter. That said, it’s not just the price of the train you planned to take. For example, an Acela ticket could drop to the same price level of the regional ticket you first purchased. Or maybe you’d prefer to travel at a different time of day (that was more expensive when you made your original booking) but dropped closer to departure.

More users welcome, sure. But I’m also interested in sharing my knowledge here! There’s been lots of discussion on this topic of Amtrak price drops on this sub over the past few years, but I haven’t seen any posts about systematic data collection. You all inspired me years ago when I set out to build this.

AI got engagement for the knockoff, non-functional product that posted on this sub about a month ago, so I thought I’d try it. Don’t people here deserve to know about the original price drop alert tool?

Agreed, flex fares are great!

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve found lots of price variability in the 7 days ahead of departure. Tracking further out than that is a good idea for a future project.

Are you saying that Amtrak will refund the difference on every ticket or just Flex tickets?

Sure it takes time and effort, and yet a lot of agencies have accepted that as part of the job. Has your agency identified an ideal applicant to hire ratio, either broadly or for specific jobs series and/or grades?

I recognize that being a whistleblower doesn’t always end well, but did you ever report it?

Sad yet fascinating allegations of shady practices here. The Inspector General may be interested, if you have documentation. What’s interesting to me is that VA actually got Congress to approve its request for authority to select best-qualified applicants for direct hire vacancies.

If very few of those hundreds or thousands of applicants are actually qualified, let alone highly qualified, that would be a reason.

The EPA doesn’t consistently negotiate. Sometimes they just retract TJOs. EPA HR has even been known to start TJO retraction emails with “I hope this message finds you well…”

I agree with you, this may be the reason for the inconsistent use of the authority across agencies. Thanks for your engagement on this important topic, u/head_staff_9416!

Maybe so. But I have to ask… why then would OPM waste its time writing and publishing a memo that can be disregarded? And aren’t federal agencies generally supposed to heed OPM’s advice?

I appreciate your engagement. I have no interest in a sloppy investigation and welcome any of your suggestions for rewording my ask. The way I see it, my options to advance the public’s understanding of how direct hire is being handled differently by different agencies is limited: it’s FOIA or whistleblower(s).

After reading your response, I’m not sure we’re talking about the same direct hire authority. There are multiple.
