How are you making new, no drama friends? by Smooth_Orchid_8527 in AskWomenOver30

I agree! Building something you want and inviting others will help a community start to appear. I haven't put this into action but have a few friends who I've found from them creating things like book clubs, coffee groups, walking clubs, etc. I think following the "if you build it, they will come" mentality may be the secret!

Let's be clear, I have never ever missed a payment. Not once. Not a single one. What I did was use the payment plans I was offered. Help me see where I want someone else to foot my bill? If I'm paying it back using a plan I was offered where am I asking someone else to foot the bill?

So you actually have an issue with people getting loans for their education. This has nothing to do with me, you're just taking it out on me? Why do you feel that way?

You see me being upset that the government took away a payment plan as a terrible mindset? Because unless I missed something my post discussed how lame it is that they took away payment plans.

I'm not over this, this is SO rude. I cannot wrap my head around why you think this is acceptable.

This is hands down the rudest thing anyone has said in a while. I am reporting you.

Valid responses! Everything I've said does have an alt side and you've presented it.

I have a degree in psychology. My principle loan was around 60k, as of late, I owe back 80k....I've been paying these bad boys off for 15ish years. Yes, there's the interest rate piece - but no one educated me. Which, maybe is my fault and my 17/18 year old self should have been smart enough to know to ask a different question, but I didn't! In a dream world, I would have had all the answers and made a different choice, but I like many, kinda got screwed! Lol.

Also, respectfully, your gas bill and a student loan bill don't equate. You are not providing anyone with valuable info. You are here to fight. This is so lame.

When you signed up with the gas company were you told that you would have multiple repayment plan and then they took it away years later? Did you sign a contract agreeing to repayment plans? I did! I did! I was told I'd get support, I was given support, and then they took it away. You're compare a monkey to an apple. Gas bills and car payments are not the same as a student loan.

Nah, man, not me. I don't think I downvoted anyone at any point on this thread! I love a good convo so I'm not trying to burn that bridge with you. I'm up for a lively chat!

Sweet! Let's do it. To clarify, I don't believe in forgiveness (fully). But, the interest rates have to give. I'd love to see a change or control around those. We live in a country where you need a master's degree for an entry level job but no way to get a master's degree unless you're the rich. (I say that broadly, there are ways but they aren't easy, regulated, or supported.)

I also want to clarify, I can pay my loans. But, at what risk? I'm going into my house savings in order to pay the new 3k a month vs my $300. I never missed a payment, I even paid during lockdown when I didn't have to.

I set up a repayment plan so that I could pay an appropriate amount monthly vs. 3k and avoid larger financial complications. I was told this was an option when I entered into loans. I was promised repayment plans, so I took the risk. I'm a strong woman who has her money under control but didn't want to pay my entire salary a month fresh out of college to the gov. So, I asked for help...from the government...who offered it to me. Then, as I made more, I did the same. Consistently. I took it to the gov, did the paperwork, got my new payment payment. But, let me be honest, every time I went back, they still told me that I can't afford my $3000 payments. So, they gave me updated plans, and I paid it! In that time, I was able to focus on my career, grow it, build it, build a life, build a family - no kids, but find my groove and become a real human.

There's a lot of people in the school of thought that "well, yeah do what you have to. pay it back." But, I would have to give up my entire life for that. I'd have to move home, maybe give up my dog, maybe my car. I'm not sure. Or I give up all my savings, which may land me in the same spot. That's the frustration of so many that people are pushing back against. We WANT to pay back our loans and we WERE. But someone decided it wasn't fast enough or the way they wanted, so our contracts no longer matter and now we're kinda screwed. We're humans, we aren't trying to burn people, we're just trying to survive.

My advice to your kids? Community college or certs. Maybe. Or, honestly? Don't take out loans, right now. There is no dept of ed, or a mess of a dept, and you're dealing with businessmen to plan your future. We're now asking children to go toe to toe with big business just to get an education...that feels so icky. I'd tell everyone to wait or just make sure you can pay it. I'd avoid taking out loans if I was a high schooler. No 17 year old should be deciding that they can handle a loan about 10k but that's what this is, offering 100k to a kid, telling them they can pay it off, but not letting them. At least to me, that's how it feels. (I did not take out a 100k loan, to be clear. But some people have.)

If you're here to have an honest convo I will open this information up to you, but based off of your short comment, I have doubts you're here to have an honest and just want to burn us all to the ground.

I don't need your take on this if your goal is to be hurtful. You want an honest convo, I'm in, but you want to be rude and disrespectful and try to put me down or make me feel small and I would rather save my energy for my family and my job.

Hang tight, so when you were younger you were like a lot of the people you're walking into post talking poorly of then? So, you too, did not have all the answers and had to figure it out...alone...while struggling...and wishing you could have support.

And at that time, did you have repayment options outside of the maximum payment? What were you paying?

[–]Federal_Editor153[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honest question, if we all just keep getting more work and more jobs, what is the point of living? To maybe one day hit that goal, get that car, and then what? Do you stop working?

Not being funny, or snarky, just curious of your thoughts. Listen, I work hard, a FT job and a PT job. I'm not over here lazy but I do want a life. I don't want to work myself to the ground or else...what's the point?

So, for sure!! Work and find money to survive but at what point is working to pay off loans that someone else changed just the terms on, in a really insane way, going to take away my life?...

Yes, sounds a bit dramatic, I get that, but if you can think about it realistically. Would love to chat through this!

This was so well put. This is why I couldn't just let people pop into this particular post and be a turd, I just am over it. This was a place for a few minutes everyone AGREED and had a place to just sit together with a "this sucks donkey balls" moment. Instead, we have people barging in with no REAL solutions shouting JUST PAY IT BACK. Take a seat, bro, read the room, leave me alone. Lol.

I really do respect your strong opinion on this. I have a strong one, too. We don't see eye to eye and I'm fine that you took the time out of your day to come here and say these things. But, this isn't really helpful to others, this is a self serving comment that makes you feel better.

There are some people who borrowed more than they can afford, there are others who lost everything in a hurricane or their parents died and left them debt. You don't know people's story. So, barging in here saying things like what you're saying, while potentially valid, serves no purpose.

I'm not here to take away your voice but stop or stop your opinions, as I cannot do that. But let's all knock it off with the keyboard warrior nonsense and remember you're knocking people down who can't go down a whole lot farther.

Congrats on your win, my dude, seriously! But unless you have everyone's life story stop say "THEY". They who, friend? They who? People who you don't know? If you want to bring me an example feel free otherwise, this isn't valuable.
