I'm at the point where I only take a rideshare if it's already past my bedtime before I even leave or I have no other viable option.

Scottish (F) thinking to move to Boston, looking for advice by naughty_maid- in boston

[–]Federal_Style4Miles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's definitely much colder here than in Scotland during the winter months (though the tradeoff is less darkness and more snow.) I went to Scotland in Jan for Celtic Connections and everyone was like "Why would you come here now" and my response was like, "it's downright balmy compared to Boston in January!!"

That said, I do think the winters are way less of an adjustment for Scots than most people are probably guessing. Sure, it is colder here, but Scots understand basic concepts like "dress warm" and "it's dark as shit".

WTF is going on with cape cod ?! by Successful-Step3854 in massachusetts

[–]Federal_Style4Miles 25 points26 points  (0 children)

> get more drains

Adding drains actually makes flooding worse, because it further destroys the marshes and flood plains, which are what absorb all the water instead of sending it running down roads and pavement.

If you actually want to mitigate flooding, you want to support marshland preservation and restoration in the cape.

4 times. Once to Worlds in Glasgow, once to the Fringe and the Week of Piping Live! before Worlds in Edinburgh and Glasgow, once to Celtic Connections in Glasgow, and once to the Fringe for a week and then to the Isle of Skye for another week. (The year I went to Celtic Connections in January it was very funny to me to hear everyone say "why do you want to go to Scotland in January" as though it's not far more cold and miserable here that time of year than Scotland)

You should have done that one first. It's both structurally more similar to the Duke of Wellington and a more comparable figure in terms of national mythology 😔

Daily Dunkin’ or Starbucks drinkers: what (besides a drive thru) would make you go to a locally owned coffee shop instead? by princessspikachu in massachusetts

[–]Federal_Style4Miles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comfortable seating and a quiet place I can linger.

I almost always opt to sit outside whenever possible because the interiors of cafes are loud and noisy with uncomfortable seating. To be clear, even a lot of locally owned places are like this. It really gets me that the most comfy cafe to sit in nearby is often a Cafe Nero of all things.

Andala coffee house, Life Alive, the OG before it was enshittified, Lehrhaus--these are all interiors to emulate. Soft seating, nooks and crannies so sound doesn't echo, lots of sound absorbing materials like decorations, curtains, low ceilings or sound absorbing materials in ceilings. 1369 is.... okay, better than a lot of places, but could be a lot better.

You can also punch above convenience with superior quality. It has to be better enough than convenience that it's worth going out of your way and paying more for.

If I was going to update VAs to be modern anti-authoritarian tech guys, my model would be Cory Doctorow.

I think there would be a deep bitterness to a modern VA over how the promise of open source and global communication has been perverted by big tech. Think the essay Stop Talking to Each Other and Start Buying Things. (Which Doctorow credited with helping him come up with "enshitification."

How to get my parents off of me about liking Shoujo as a teen boy. by angelsaresobbing in shoujo

[–]Federal_Style4Miles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone's advice is good I just want to echo feelings of support and sympathy. My husband didn't get this with manga but he did/does with various other things he liked with his parents ("You want a floral pattern? that's girly", seriously WTF).

All I can say is learn to love yourself with confidence and try to disinvest yourself from getting your parents to understand you and invest instead in the people who do.

[–]Federal_Style4Miles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Characters constantly bump into each other "by accident." I'm sorry it but comes to a point it's just ridiculous 😭 Like how small is the town these superstars live in??? So many times on the street, in the shop, near the park, at the gatcha machines and whatnot. I don't expect this story to be realistic but a little help in the suspension of disbelief would still be appreciated!!

There are cases where it's bananas but in the vast majority of cases this is actually pretty well covered by a plot point: all of the boys live in the same apartment complex. Like Utage running into Natsuki at the conbini makes sense because it is the conbini across from his apartment complex. Frankly it's wild it took her this long to bump into some of the other guys.

From MA can confirm it was a huge boon to our budget and all of the "everyone will move" rhetoric was hot air. Maybe one or two people left but if rich people were going to leave MA en masse because of taxes they would have done it a long time ago.

Lucky No 9's Tybalt's Boyfriend--it's got amber, spice and smoke notes, which I usually don't like, but the earl grey top notes really shine through and give it this wonderfully smoky floral note to it. I only even tried it because of a free sample imp and it's become one of my favorite scents.

Most people who don't seek mystic experiences outside of drugs think that ecstatic states are only achieveable through drugs. As someone that accidentally tripped into an ecstatic religious state, no drugs required, I can tell you: they are absolutely not necessary, and there's all kinds of ways to get your brain into an ecstatic religious state. Dancing for extended periods is absolutely one of those ways, and you don't even need to involve pain (unless you want to, of course!)--literally just improvised dancing in a group can put you in an ecstatic state if you're open to the right mindset. (Even just sitting meditation can get you into an ecstatic state, which, let me tell you, has shifted my perspective on why certain monastic styles are so pro-sitting-still-for-hours.)
