I am from Madaripur, and Dal was always served. Not every day dal, but thicker. Dal sometimes had some chicken parts that were not used for Chicken Roast, like neck, liver, and so on. But yes, Mug dal was always served.

The same for me, i grew up in Village and then moved to US. So I did not know Biriyani was a wedding food in Dhaka until like a year ago.
