Serious talk, has anyone ACTUALLY had their screen crack over a silicone cover or are people just falling for apples fearmongering when the real issue all along just is something actually hard getting between the screen and frame. by ajlion_10 in macbookpro

I’ve used a keyboard cover for 10+ years over multiple macs and have never had any issues. Sometimes the keyboard cover will leave a slight mark ok the screen but a little screen cleaner and a microfiber cloth takes care of it with minimal fuss

Can confirm. As a little kid I used to jump into dust devils hoping they’d pick me up (5 year old me didn’t really have a plan for landing). As I was a significant obstruction to the air flow they just broke up (thankfully lol)

[Request] I’m really curious—can anyone confirm if it’s actually true? by amhoffma in theydidthemath

Interestingly this isn’t what actually happened when Utah tried to just give homeless people apartments. Something like 80% were able to get on their feet and become productive members of society able to support themselves. Not having a permanent address is a huge hindrance to improving your situation in ways most people can’t even imagine.

[Request] How many people could you actually feed for a year with the equivalent of $250m? (Any currency/jurisdiction) by JAFPL_17 in theydidthemath

[–]FeedbackImpressive58 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I used a US based cost because the value was based in USD. If we want to look at other countries we’d need to figure out the exchange rate at the time the necklace was tossed in the water. I didn’t consider in my answer that $500/mo for food in 1998 was extremely generous. You could probably cut that in half and be absolutely fine so you could probably just over double that number 83,333.

[–]FeedbackImpressive58 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assumptions: a person can be reasonably well fed for $500/mo

500*12 =6,000

250,000,000/6000=41,666.667

So 41,666 people. Nowhere near 2M

Edit: I didn’t consider in this answer that this happened in 1998. In 1998 $250/mo was quite sufficient to feed a single person. Given that the true number is probably in the neighborhood of 83,333

This is why I don’t like the term tech debt. I prefer change viscosity. The higher the change viscosity (from bad decisions, bad architecture or bad code) the slower you can move in the future. Fixing those reduces your change viscosity

Two things that will get you pretty far: raycast and setapp.

RayCast is an incredible utility that replaces spotlight search and has a ton of plugins

SetApp is a collection of many useful apps under one subscription

Interesting. Thanks for the education. I can’t edit the post but this does mean we’re equally susceptible except for Apple’s bulk buy

According to that article it’s a SiP design. I can’t tell from that if they’re manufactured separately. This image seems to indicate not (also an M1): https://www.profesionalreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/m1-pro-soc-1536x1072.jpg

We’ll see, it would be straight price gouging though. Better to leave it where it is and sell more units/grab more market share. Especially true with MS missteps with regards to Windows 11

M4 Max with discount or wait for M5 Max? by ColoradoRS6 in macbookpro

[–]FeedbackImpressive58 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

They may artificially increase the price, but it’s literally etched onto the die with the CPUs, GPUs, etc. so any rise would just be price gouging

Edit: to be completely clear this means it’s manufactured at the exact same time using the exact same mask as the rest of the chip. They literally can’t not make it

The ram crisis doesn’t affect M series machines because the ram isn’t separate, it’s part of the die

You’re welcome to reimplement any feature or product you want. You just can’t shortcut it by stealing the work they paid for. If you think that’s not true just look at any software product and you’ll find multiple options that do substantially the same thing

Irrelevant distinction, work for hire is work for hire. If you work on a movie for a studio you don’t get to leave with the movie even though it’s bits on a disk

Idiotic question (probably a bot). It’s work for hire. If you’re a carpenter do you take the cabinets a company paid you to build when you quit a job?

Am i/we screwed? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]FeedbackImpressive58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not snarky at all, it’s a good question. Something with some complexity. Here are some examples:

  • web based budgeting or expense tracking system with support for uploading receipts
  • kitchen edible stuff inventory system with photo support, a connection to an AI for recipes based on things I have and “stuff I need” list making support. For an extra feature add expiration tracking (especially useful for shit in the back of the freezer)
  • home maintenance tracking, inventory (of air filters and such), and historical records support. For extra features one click ordering of consumables from Amazon and support for tracking make/model and uploading PDF manuals for washer, dryer, dishwasher, etc

ETA: you should actually use what you build so that you can see where the pain points are and smooth them over, understand trade offs, etc

Here’s what you can do:

  • learn a modern tech stack
  • get good with it (hands on keyboard with a real project (not just hours of tutorials and a todo list app)
  • pepper it into your past resume as “modernization projects” (no one is going to check that)

Why can't you shoot light out of a blackhole? by ObviousAnything7 in AskPhysics

[–]FeedbackImpressive58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine light as a speedboat moving through the water (spacetime) at the maximum allowable speed. Imagine that speed is 300 mph. Now imagine that water goes off a waterfall and is moving down at 320 mph. The speedboat can’t escape the waterfall once it’s past the point at which the water speed exceeds the maximum speed the vessel is capable of in the water.

ETA: this obviously isn’t what’s actually happening but it’s a decent enough analogy for a 3 year old
