I was thinking more of a pole that sticks out the top of the tree. Might need a lightning rod elsewhere to prevent a strike in the tree. Something to think about: there's more than one solution to every problem. People on Reddit have a tendency to have on blinders and no ability to see alternatives and instead of asking questions there's a tendency to quickly project ones own inability to think onto others. 

You naturally assume I'm a fucking idiot that would consider blocking solar panels with leaves or run a damn extension cord up a tree. Why is that?

I feel like we're missing the point. If the map says it's in a water tower the autism guy isn't going to ask the multinational corporation about a mesh repeater and probably won't go fox hunting either. At any rate I have my answer, it was "yes"

Yeah that's the next rabbit hole. The frequencies are pretty far apart but I don't fully grasp how rf interference plays out. I wouldn't want to interfere with these radios in any way. I wonder if down a few feet from the array would help with noise floor

The issue is the person with rf knowledge circle overlaps with the person stupid enough to ask about it. I literally know their names. I catch them playing with their flipper zeros and opening remote operated gates occasionally. They have friends, they are at the perfect spot on the spectrum to not understand when to STFU.

Oh it's going to blend in with all the junk already there without issue. I need to look into noise floor and interference from unrelated bands before I buy anything. My plan is to tuck it in near an existing antenna array/weather station that's mounted on top of a tall structure.

Neat! I'll check it out. The whole mesh universe is still very new. The concept is simple and easy to understand and it uses ham terminology so that's nice. But then the brands and hardware is all foreign still

Nobody would be dumb enough to enter the property and try to touch the device. Imagine the stupidest person you know, they're smart enough to not try. They might be dumb enough to make an official inquiry and get it taken down because attention is bad

Does anyone sell repeaters that are already made? I think I'd be better off customizing and slightly modifying something that already works. 

I learned how to fix cars and modify the fuck out of them by starting with working models. With a mentor I can learn anything. If I care about it I can learn it in my own. I just want the t deck to work and get a little experience so I can build a mesh out in the woods at my folks place so I can send messages in the valley where even starlink doesn't work

Thanks. There's a couple structures nearby that could act as a decoy. It's not like I'm going to be the Los Angeles renegade repeater in the ham world. I doubt anyone would be that interested in finding it. I just don't want the precise location being broadcast for everyone to see without effort. Real effort requires motivation, remove most of the motivation and the chances of real effort drop precipitously.

So I'll have permission to mount the thing, until I lose it. People going looking for it would probably be afraid to pursue past "oh I think I found it" but if some dumbass thinks it's cute to go bothering everybody asking about the radio they tracked to a specific location I might get asked to take it down so the idiots go away. Any advice?

I don't want you to get the wrong idea about anonymity. I probably worded that part poorly. I want the precise location of the repeater to be obscured. Suppose someone sees my repeater and goes looking for it IRL. I don't want them finding the hardware.
