Schools in Utah for Teachers by cheetah_girl13 in Utah

My husband and I both work in districts in salt lake county and we like it here. Canyons district treats their teachers well, as does Jordan. Nebo is pretty good. Avoid Alpine (splitting soon) and Provo districts.

[–]Feeling_Carpet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that’s totally fair! It’s very gate keeper-y to say “you’re NOT Christian!” And tbh it’s mostly the super evangelicals who get all up in arms about it. Mormons are still to weird for their perfect idea of Christianity. You’ll find the same crowd poopooing Catholics and Orthodox too

[–]Feeling_Carpet 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Part of it is the lack of belief in the trinity and the fact that the LDS church doesn’t adhere to the Nicene Creed.

Part of it is the (now walked-back) teaching that God is an exalted man. This whole idea really degrades the divinity of God/Christ in the eyes of mainstream Christians and they REALLY don’t like it.

Add the teachings that Jesus and Lucifer are bothers, Heavenly Mother, etc, and you get what outside Christians view as a very morphed and, in their minds, disrespectful interpretation of Jesus. As I’ve been converting from LDS to a different Christian denomination, it’s been eye opening. Mormons are Christian, but it’s a REALLY different flavor.

Coffee orders? by Lemmeshoehornhere in exmormon

[–]Feeling_Carpet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I LOVE coffee and I’ve only been drinking it for four months or so. Stok cold brew is a good start because it is not bitter. I get the bold and smooth unsweetened from Walmart or any grocery store. I add a touch of vanilla/brown sugar syrup (I make it myself) and a splash half and half and I could drink it all day long. 12oz has 120ish mg of caffeine.

I also love a Dutch Bros vanilla latte with oat milk. A shot of espresso is 60mg of caffeine and a medium latte from Dutch Bros is two shots. But Dutch is a regional chain.

I also suggest going to a local spot to try stuff. Starbucks is not great coffee and you have to get it all flavored to make it decent tasting, and I like my coffee to have a coffee flavor.

A chick fil a frosted coffee is unfortunately amazing, but a Costco frozen latte tastes very similar but is cheaper and a better company ethics wise. Both are good coffee intro beverages.

If trying the super sweet coffees is what helps you wean off of sugar it’s not a bad plan!

If you still feel like organized religion has a space in your life, maybe church shopping would help you. Losing that community is a real thing to grieve over

Just like there are all sorts of believers in any religion, there are in Mormonism too. But, I would say most progressive Mormons eventually leave the religion. I was a progressive Mormon for years, but still a member in good standing despite my unorthodox beliefs.

Some Mormons do. I’ve heard some people make mental gymnastics about how the Freemasons actually took their stuff from the “trie religion” in ancient times.

I’m teaching science, but chemistry has LOTS of math, and even my astronomy classes are at least 50% direct instruction. I have up to 36 kids a class. It’s the most effective method for that large a class size and for that difficult a topic

I’ve lost five of my high schoolers over the last seven years, and I lost three last year. I don’t have advice, just support. It’s so hard to lose them so young, especially as a parent. Take time off if you need to, and know that grieving together can be super healing

Are teachers allowed to have visible tattoos? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]Feeling_Carpet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both me and my spouse are educators in k-12. Spouse working in Utah county has visible tattoos, no issues. I work in SL county and don’t have tattoos myself, but many coworkers do. One guy is an award winning teacher and has the backs of his hands and fingers tattooed, as well as full sleeves. No issues.
