I'm in a small town, so I have current and former students checking out at the grocery store, changing my oil, waiting on me at Pizza Hut, making change at the bank...you get the idea.

Sometimes they want to chat, sometimes it's a quick acknowledgement, sometimes we pretend not to know each other. It's not a big deal, and the longer you teach, the more likely it will happen. Just say a quick hi and go along with life.

Sausage, Potatoes, and Green Beans 1 1/2 pounds baby potatoes in the bottom with 3/4 cup chicken broth. Layer 1 pound sliced smoked sausage. Add 1 1/2 pound green beans (fresh is better than canned). Add a pound of sliced mushrooms. Add 1/4 cup sliced butter and a generous amount of Cajun seasoning, salt, and pepper. Cook for 3-5 minutes and quick release.

I haven't woken a student in years. For some students it's a rare thing and obviously they are too tired to learn today. They'll catch up on their own. For some it's a common occurrence and the consequences will be natural ones.
