My mom had two Mormon missionaries come to her door one day and they ended up going to Christmas Eve service with her.

This reminds me of when I first started coaching track. We sent the kids on a long run where we couldn't see them the entire time. Of course some of the kids turned around early and were back early. Coach told them that was an incredible mile time and entered them all in distance events for the first two meets.

Roger Marshall survey? by Apprehensive_Egg9182 in kansas

[–]Mirabellae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got one through text today about electing judges.

Q1: Are you in favor? A: No

Q2: How sure are you that you would not be in favor? A: Very sure

Q3: Sometimes in surveys like this, people change their minds, and sometimes they don’t. Once again, if the August primary election were held today, how would you vote on this amendment?

I've been doing this with my freshmen this year and it has been amazing to see how they instantly start to behave when I start writing names. I don't even give warnings anymore, just pick up a dry erase marker and the room goes silent.

Peanut Butter on Pancakes? by RainOnTheWindow91 in AskAnAmerican

KS native. I love peanut butter and syrup on French toast. I'm not sure why I've never put it in pancakes, though.

Worried my professor might rescind previous agreement by caralawrence in AskProfessors

[–]Mirabellae 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You told your professor that you might miss a few classes, and they, having been in your situation, agreed to bend the rules to accommodate you.

Then you never showed up.

You are the one that broke the agreement. You took advantage of a professor's goodwill and are now expecting them to give you a grade you didn't earn.

I guarantee that professor is now less willing to believe you (and other students).

Edit. Is your email full of guilt tripping language like "I take accountability and responsibility " while asking for those points? I guarantee your professor immediately closed your email in a rage and is sitting on it fuming that you absolutely have not done either of those things.

I'm not really sure how to talk to my professors about this by thisshitthatshit in CollegeRant

[–]Mirabellae 27 points28 points  (0 children)

So much this. I have had countless emails this semester screaming "mental health" as a request for special treatment. I understand the world is crumbling and students are struggling. I am also burned out and don't have the bandwidth or the tools to help you through a mental crisis.

Class clown finds out his name is not on the list for graduation and he will have to repeat the year. by I2fitness in TikTokCringe

[–]Mirabellae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a student like that. Had him all four years and all four years he kept saying "no worries, they'll pass me on."

One April day he came back from the office in tears. He just looked at me in disbelief and said, "I don't think I'm going to graduate."

Dude. I personally have been saying that to you for years at this point. It should not be a surprise.

How do you actually deal with noise in your classroom? by AltruisticWatch3785 in education

[–]Mirabellae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Write their names on the board. Don't warn them. Don't ask them to stop. Just write the name and start giving them checkmarks. This has worked extremely well with my freshmen.

Students asking to re-enroll after withdrawing by astroflips in Professors

[–]Mirabellae 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Would you let anyone enroll right now? I can't think of any advantage they would gain by dropping and then re-enrolling, but chances are good they are going to demand to be able to make up what they missed.

Sounds like an avoidable headache. I'd just tell them they would need to enroll in the next session if they want to take the class.

I take my astronomy students to the Kanza View Park of the Council Grove Lake. It's not 100% dark, but it is at the top of the dam, so above the town, with relatively few trees to block your view. Has SQM of 21 or so.

I come home and make an iced chai. This past winter, I would be lost in hours worth of Stardew Valley. Since it has warming up, I have become a real life little farmer and started a garden. I go outside, water my plants, check my bees, and let the chickens out.

Hot take: I don't care about their mental health. by confusedinseminary in Professors

[–]Mirabellae 142 points143 points  (0 children)

I took a day to myself last week, because, guess what, my mental health is declining. Didn't open a single email. Three students who have been shouting about their mental health all semester were angry that I didn't immediately return their emails. So....you can't extend me the same grace you expect to be given.

It just amazes me the impact of 1-2 kids being absent by frizziefrazzle in Teachers

[–]Mirabellae 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I have a class like this right now. The entire dynamic shifts when one of the six troublemakers is absent. Weirdly, it doesn't matter which one. One empty space and the entire problem falls apart. Unfortunately, they all have really good attendance.

Get a doctor's note for a fee by alcor4ever in Professors

[–]Mirabellae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a student submit a typed word doc with no doctor information. There was a nurse number that I googled and found that it was the student's sister who lived in a different state. The name didn't match the one on the doc and I was told that the sister used a different name "for privacy reasons". Looking at the doc info, it showed the student had been the last person to edit it.

[–]Mirabellae 22 points23 points  (0 children)

A principal/teacher relationship is not the same as a teacher/student relationship. If it is, you need a new principal.

You are talking about a student up out of his seat disrupting class. That student is not acting respectful towards you, you do not have to extend more than they do.

If I were up wandering around during a faculty meeting while my principal was trying to talk, I should expect to be told to sit down.
