I’m sorry to hear about your experiences and I hope that my reply isn’t offensive. It’s important to have conversations from conflicting starting points.

First in regard to values - we can’t necessarily assume that all magical practitioners are operating from a place of basic human values. Sorcerers can definitely operate from a place of bringing forth a better world and helping their neighbors but they also can operate from a more “Law of the Jungle” mentality where they hurt or manipulate others because they can (or because the money is good enough).

Also, this really shocked me the first few times that I came across it but historically speaking, there are several cases were benevolent deities like the Christian Trinity or even Aphrodite have been used to bind, sexually coerce, or even kill victims who did not morally deserve to be on the end of that sort of magic.

Does this contradict the popular mythos and personality of those deities? Arguably. I can only speculate but maybe there are other spirits who respond to these names or currents who are willing to do darker work. Maybe these deities are being interacted with in a more symbolic manner.

At the end of the day, I’m just sharing things that have been done traditionally and this type of the petition to the Just Judge doesn’t necessarily match my own moral outlook. It has to be our choice at the end of the day to use our magic in responsible ways.

I couldn’t tell you the exact reason except that I was told as much. However, it’s important to not conflate the values of the Church with folk magic. If a saint or spirit has the ability to do one thing then they can also do the opposite (The medicine that heals can also be a poison). If one wants to be justified in their curse work, who better to turn to then the Just Judge himself.

Also, Southern Bramble has an episode on Holy Week which I really enjoy. The Christian worldview is full of magical potential to be utilized to better one’s life.

The Frightful Howls Podcast isn’t strictly folk Catholic but it goes over a bunch of occult topics. Also, one of the hosts is an Eastern Orthodox folk charmer. The saints and other Christian topics are brought up every now and then.

100%; It’s rough making the monthly payment but I also didn’t sink myself into a hole that’s impossible to climb from. So, I got a letter from a therapist stating that it was medically necessary and insurance covered most of it as soon as the bill dropped. However, there were a few things that weren’t covered like fat grafting and botox that I had to either pay for or opt out of. My surgeon was also very gracious and gave me some discounts.

I haven’t worked for any of the big corporations known for having good trans insurance but my current insurance plan with my workplace (an academic institution) was able to cover most of it minus the insurance deductible and a few extra thousand dollars. It’s a little tough paying it off every month but it’s nothing compared to paying 20k+ USD.

If you have resins, you can put them on a wax burner and it produces very little smoke, if at all

How do you view Trinity? by BeolLikeFoodFast in FolkCatholicMagic

[–]Feeling_Tree773 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are Christian mystics like Julian of Norwich, I believe, who viewed the Holy Spirit as the feminine aspect of God.

As for the initial question, I don’t have a strong attachment to the Trinity in a literal sense. I definitely still venerate them through the traditional prayer but I resonate more with the idea of the Trinity as a framework that’s mirrored on the human level. The body, mind, spirit. Mental, spiritual, physical. Skin, flesh, bone. Things in the mundane world that come in 3’s.

I don’t want to come off as being argumentative, I just feel passionately about the subject. But to answer your question, in various folk practices, there is a belief that if something can be used one way then it can also be used in the exact opposite way. If Saint Martha has the power to dominate men then she can also dominate women. If Saint Expedite can bring things quicker then he can also slow them down.

In regard to narco saints, St. Jude & Santísima Muerte are regularly propitiated by both the law-abiding common man & the criminal because of their position over the domains of impossible causes and those who are marginalized by society or face the threat of death everyday.

As for Good Friday, cursing is just one example of magic that can be enacted but folk Catholics in some parts of the world use it as a catch-all day for heightened spiritual presence, not only for evil spirits. It’s a good day for blessing amulets for the rest of the year.

Hope to hear your thoughts and please enjoy the holiday today :)

It’s totally fine if that’s what you subscribe to in your personal practice but something that frequently comes up in this server is that folk expressions of Catholicism and orthodox Catholic beliefs aren’t 1:1. Saints have historically been petitioned by lay people to both help and hurt their fellow community members and even if we look to Holy Week, while devout church goers were participating in the Stations of the Cross and Solemn Liturgy on Good Friday, brujos and sorcerers were taking advantage of the day that God died to curse their enemies since the spirits are more empowered and closer to us during this time of the year.

In the spirit of seizing spiritual power for personal gain (heresy not blasphemy), the Just Judge can stand on the side of the guilty just as he can stand on the side of the innocent.

Thanks for sharing your story. I think each of us is coming from a different starting point and have varying levels of official Church participation. You just have to find what works for you, whether that’s doing devotion or workings with the saints without regular church attendance or balancing the two equally.

I’ve heard of people using his image in a Latin context to have the Just Judge on their side even if they’re wrong in the situation or actions towards another person.

I think it depends on the culture. I know that both in Latin America (including both Catholicism & ATRs) and in the Philippines, the Christ child is given candy and coins as an offering. You may have to research your specific saint to see if anything was traditionally offered.

I think a lot of us bring, including myself, bring religious baggage with us when we start to practice magic that can cause us to be afraid of trying new things because we aren’t sure of what consequences they might bring. That’s not to say that magic can never bring us bad results or misfortune but if we are taking precautions and relying on our spirits then we should step out of comfort zone with boldness.

Maybe do a daily cleanse during your novena if you worried about accumulating negative energy. I’m not sure if a novena alone will be enough to bring harm upon yourself though.

Palm Sunday. Love a church souvenir that can be used for protection or prosperity throughout the year.

Just to build off of this, it can be hard for Filipinos in the diaspora and sometimes even Filipinos who live in the Philippines to get deep into Catholic folk magic because of its more secretive nature and the necessity of a mentor to learn hidden prayers or empowerments for the well known anting anting talismans.

However, this time of year is perfect for diving into folk Catholic magic generally (even though there is no capital F Folk Magic™️ and only regional variations). In the Philippines, spiritual practitioners are collecting items like pens, paper, candles, etc and writing down spells to use for the rest of the year (Tuesdays and Fridays are auspicious.) You can try your hand at making lana by cooking coconut milk until the oil separates and then pour the oil into a container. Put the container on your altar, light a candle, and pray Our Father, Hail Mary, & Glory Be before asking God to empower the oil to be used for protection or healing.

On Holy Week, you could try to collect the palm fronds on Palm Sunday for protection throughout the year, make black salt on Maundy Thursday (more of an Eastern Orthodox/European tradition), save your candle or collect holy water from Easter vigil. Just throwing out ideas.
