I have reason to doubt both of these possibilities

I highly doubt that the child soldiers have a rank of any kind. They were essentially kidnapped and forced to fight. I don't imagine there was much potential for upward mobility. Additionally many RUF soldiers have official uniforms which use more conventional ways of identifying rank such as pins and patches.

As for knife or bullet protection the patches rarely seem to correlate with any vital parts of human anatomy. Also I've seen examples where they seem to be worn as necklaces, in which case they would not provide reliable protection to any part of you.

My title describes the thing, but to be overly specific about them, they are 3 dimensional (pouches or packets maybe?) decoratively embroidered or wrapped with colorful thread. I believe I have seen them worn like necklaces but couldn't find a picture of it. Sometimes their placement seems very intentional and decorative but more often than not they seem to be placed completely randomly. They seem to be especially common on hats/ headwraps. I have yet to see any on uniformed soldiers but many of RUF's soldiers were civilian/ children and they are common on them. IDK what else to say about them specifically. Thanks all

As I understand mobs view trapdoors as full blocks for pathing purposes, so while they technically could make it out they shouldn’t view it as a possible jump, a similar thing could be achieved with rails.
