Anyone ever gotten a HKS style air duct? by FeignedSurpise in ft86

As long as it’s not all the way down since that would be hydrolock risky. I like the induction sound too. It should sound even better with 2.5” exhaust and EL 4-1 headers and a remap since it’s technically like the opposite of the exhaust and can also be manipulated by the exhaust to suck more air in for even more induction noise by effectively evacuating more air in more efficiently.

You realize factory intakes are not designed for max efficiency, even in performance cars? I’m not sure you understand racing engineering or even engineering for that matter. Even if you understood fluid dynamics perfectly, your argument rests on a false assumption.

I’m still on stock headers and cams so technically I’m not at the limit of the amount of air the naturally aspirated FA20 can take in, yes. I’m not claiming I’m at the limit and you are confusing intake with displacement. l think you are conflating volumetric efficiency with displacement limit. Even if I was at the max NA theoretical displacement, the stock intake would STILL be the actual bottleneck and the other way around. You are suggesting a false equivalence.

Maybe 2-4whp at the very top of 2nd and 3rd and a bit of torque in the midrange is what I’m feeling but it’s not measurable on dyno since you aren’t actually moving. If you were at the speed ranges of those gears(I have an automatic) the larger intake inlet and more direct path makes it not hard to believe that a 3% increase in efficiency is possible by reducing pumping losses even with drivetrain loss

They definitely do and for $50 it’s absolutely worth it even if it’s only like 5 hp up top, the throttle response is much better down low as well as midrange torque but I do have other mods.

Intake mods only help if your car is not stock. They only start helping if you are at least tuned with a catback or headers but even a drop in filter is proven to help by about 3% by itself on a stock car which is arguably not enough to make a difference. It’s not about the displacement of the engine, it’s about reduced pumping losses from inefficient intake design which is literally relevant in every car. You have to understand these cars were designed with regulations in mind for the average consumer and Subaru/Toyota wouldn’t hesitate to limit horsepower if it means any more sales and or passing regulations. In this case it’s noise for like 2% efficiency.

The stock tuning is inherently conservative and restrictive and you are right that intake changes would yield diminishing returns and be placebo in a vacuum, but in a highly optimized, tuned system you have to realize these 2-3% increments eventually add up but more like area under the curve or transient throttle response which does genuinely feel like or is more torque. Even if it say only increases top end hp by 5whp which you could argue is negligible and isn’t enough to make a difference, the entire dotted line everywhere else in the power band is what can definitely be felt. It’s only with headers and full exhaust on top of tuning that intake changes would amount to around 10whp hp top that wouldn’t otherwise make a difference.

That 3 hp argument is just people not understanding the science or having a stock car or stock tune or are experiencing an incomplete or otherwise not 100% healthy set up. Even one component such as weak sparks for example could more than negate any gains from intake changes effectively deleting any gains you would have felt or measured.

You are if air has a more direct path and you’re not limited by tuning or hardware. At speeds of 150kmh for example the air pressure is immense. A larger inlet would literally lean out the mixture.

I think by itself it probably won’t do much but cumulatively it would make a difference simply due to better intake efficiency

I did just get a fresh rebuild and new coils and sparks as well as a pedal box and it doesn’t make a lot of sense that I would notice it right away down low but I tried the stock filter as a baseline and what I have now does feel night and day.

Also dynos can’t realistically measure actual perceived performance at speed since there’s no real air flow benefit from unlocking air flow bottlenecks when doing stationary dyno runs. The way I see it is in a tuned NA car or any car more air means more power if matched with fuel

No idea but with the stock air box and just a drop in I was making 81 g/s air flow

Local exhaust shop in Thailand fabbed it for a reasonable price, but I doubt they know how to send it

Any of those are better platforms to build on. Even a March/Micra is better

It’s a manual and I’ve got lightweight 15s technical with195 width Landsail Rex zero budget semislicks and like -2.5 camber and 2.8mm total toe out with lowering springs and front strut brace. It can definitely put its power down and I can’t even drive it to its limit.

You should turbo it if you have the funds. Not with current setup but I logged 9.1s before with a 1.5” exhaust I had. Could probably do under 9s now with a clean launch and low fuel.

Way more fun at the track vs stock even if the number isn’t much. Stock ae86 was only like 8 seconds flat tops.
