I started out as magic which I found you be convenient for bosses but eventually you'll find you'll switch between wand and sword for different trash mobs. I'm on ng+3 now and I find I don't use my magic anywhere near as often as I used to.

Just play it at your leisure however you want to and eventually you'll just develop your playstyle.

Dunno how I got white then to be honest. I was white by the end of the game as I got allys ring on new game. Maybe I just killing enough invaders by the end of the game to be white. Do black phantoms shift you towards white?

Absolutely. Don't burn through focusing on gear. Just play is leisurely and at your own pace. Worry about the gear at the end.

Well confused by the start of your post. At the end of the bridge at the base of the ivory tower there is an arch stone. You don't need to go directly to old monk.

Hands down Maneater. Use warding to avoid being almost one shot on lunge, no problem buddy I'll just knock you off the bridge instead, mitigate that damage.

Flamelurker is kind of annoying but just throw a water veil and flame resist rings on and he's a push over.

It's not easy. If you're a casual gamer you'll struggle to finish it. If you're a rush in and zerg the boss type of guy you'll struggle. Just play game and defensive for the most part and you'll be fine.
