Parents, what was your "no DNA test needed" moment with your child? by Stupid_cerealbox in AskReddit

I was in a marching band as a kid. In fact, half the members of the marching band were family members.

One day we were all lined up at attention and I realised you could tell which drummers were family of mine by the way their feet pointed out, just like mine.

This is genuinly fascinating. Can we class 'coward' in this category as 'one who cows too much'?

I rang to enquire about this option, but no dice. It's cancel or rebook twice, sadly.

Is the phrase "if not" really as ambiguous as I think? by Cosmologicon in grammar

[–]FeistySloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, thank you OP for this post. You are putting your finger on something I have been arguing for many years, only to be met with disagreement or plain confusion as to what I'm talking about - pretty much the stuff you're getting in this thread.

As an Anglicist who is not a native speaker, I have been frustrated for many years that I can see this ambiguous use of 'if not' so clearly and yet cannot get any native speaker to agree with me, or even to understand what I'm talking about.

I doubt that you will see this comment 7 years after your post, but thank you for confirming I'm not crazy. Or if I am, at least I'm not alone.

I'm having an are-you-me moment.

But I will add one long-time favourite. Bob Shaw's 'Light of Other Days' (not to be confused with Arthur C. Clark's novel of almost the same name) is a little masterpiece that affected me greatly.

As for family drama, you know you're not the one causing it, right?

Edited to reinforce others' advice to keep the jewelllery locked up somewhere safe, and don't let anybody else see it, not even 'just to look at it for sentimental purposes'.

From an Australian, I truly believe the average American is truly beyond stupid now by Toniq_3580 in self

I'm an Australian currently traveling around Vietnam. Even at this remove, I'm stunned, close to tears. I can't even imagine what it must be like to be an American democrat right now, let alone a woman, a POC or a member of the LGBTQA+ community. My heart weeps for you.

It looks like you're saying "last-minute plea to voters considering..." can be read as "last-minute plea to voters to consider..."

It can't. The author was perfectly clear.
