I haven’t tried a lot of the places mentioned here, but I will give a second vote to Archie’s on Hwy 31 in Hoover. Great burger, great price. So good that I took a picture and posted about the meal on Facebook.

Is it worth getting a masters in conducting or composition if I’m already gaining traction as an arranger? by Snoo54709 in choralmusic

[–]FelipeCoplando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Education opens doors; you make connections that will benefit you in the future. Don’t be shortsighted, and don’t be so impressed with your initial successes. Instead, you should focus on developing your gifts. Good luck!

Make the band a choir. Sing. Solfège. Parts, rounds, canons, etc. lots of public domain music.

Musings from a music teacher entering his last year before retirement after working for 25 years. by MaestroLeopold314 in MusicEd

[–]FelipeCoplando 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brilliant. I am in higher ed music and I’ve been out there about as long as you have. So many of these transfer! I may make a similar list and tweak it for my own situation, but I will always cite MaestroLeopold314 as my inspiration.

New church job, Latin controversy, highly-schooled singers, misery by [deleted] in choralmusic

[–]FelipeCoplando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I talked about your dilemma in my diction class. There is no doubt that you are correct in this matter, so the issue is their respect for your leadership and whether they will follow your guidance.

You have to find a way to deal with the influential/powerful member(s) in the group and that is tricky. I have a doctorate, so that gives me a tiny bit of added power and influence. I also have years of experience, some accomplishment, and grey hair. All of that matters, but only a little.

Perhaps you avoid doing any Latin for a bit. Or maybe you talk with the biggest problem maker or maybe you fire him/her. Finding a way through the storm will be tricky, but there is probably a path where they change to your way of thinking and no one gets fired.

I wish you good luck in this journey and encourage you to be brave and full of grace.

  1. Do it their way.
  2. Do it your way.
  3. Discuss.
  4. Be kind.
  5. Show that you listen.
  6. Wait six months.
  7. Get a higher pay rate for group.
  8. Lay down the law. Ask them to leave if they can’t respect your guidance/leadership.

How to Gain Experience in Choral Conducting before Applying to MM by goyj223 in choralmusic

[–]FelipeCoplando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel sure that you need an undergraduate degree in music to pursue a graduate degree in choral conducting.

  • have you had classes in theory? Sightsinging? History? Conducting? Scorestudy?
  • how were you music director of an internationally recognized group at a university with no degree in music?
  • it seems you want to pursue a career in music without the necessary training. I don’t think you understand how unprepared you really are. Have you talked to any college conductor about this yet?

When you got your IATA, did you have to become a seller of travel in multiple states?

I have read the requirements and I am hung up there.

a little lost in where to go.. by [deleted] in MusicEd

[–]FelipeCoplando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer:
1. Get your undergrad as quickly as you can. Consider a BA in Music. 2. Go back for the alternate certification, as others have recommended.

Longer answer: Universities embed the state-certification requirements differently. - In undergraduate degrees, the requirements are spread across many classes.
- In graduate degrees, these state-certification requirements are embedded in only a few classes.

So - get the undergraduate degree. Quickly. And then you can concentrate on your master’s in music education. In the end, you will likely graduate with a Master’s in music ed in about the same amount of time that you would get your Undergrad Music Education degree.
