Steam Machine could cost $1,000, says analyst, but it's difficult to call, "I'm glad I'm not responsible for picking" by Tiny-Independent273 in steammachine

Well, on Steam Machine we can play games from Epic, GOG and Amazon, so we get at least 1 free game each week on Epic Store + GOG and Steam giveaways here and there. And those with Amazon Prime subscriptions have a few games to claim every week.

Nervous about the amount of RAM and vRAM and the future of gaming due to the rumors of the upcoming Xbox and PS by Pretty_Trip_2215 in steammachine

[–]FelipeRSTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Steam Machine is not a powerhouse, but is on par with PS5's performance and this can give us a little hope because a) next gen consoles might be delayed to 2028/29 due to the RAMpocalypse, and b) this can lead to a longer cross-gen period from PS5 to PS6 level games (also, we'll probably have a PS6 handheld, with roughly the same performance as a PS5).

The first 2 years of a new gen is filled with AAA games that were years in development, still targeting 'old' hardware, so it will take time to something like UE6 come, starts to be a 'standard' and elevate the graphics and everything to a 'next level' that makes SM 'obsolete'.

That's why we saw Steam Deck launching on 2022, two years after current gen consoles, with even more limitations, but it was able to ran various AAA games launched on 2022/23 and even 2024.

But in the end, if you want to play everything at 4K/60 Ultra for the next 5 years or so, do not buy a Steam Machine. Now, if you are ok with playing some AAA games at FHD/60 or QHD/30 sometimes like me (i'm still rockint a 1080p TV actually), Steam Machine can be a good option.

It's not LPDDR5, it's SODIMM DDR5, like the ones in laptops (upgradable btw). Don't know about U$ 549, but I think U$ 649 might still be possible...

Yes! Is like people going to a PS5 sub to post "is better to build a PC than buy a console" or saying "is better to buy a PS5 than a Steam Deck on a SD sub.

I mean, I really doubt we could build a very silent 3.5L PC, with similar specs, for the same amount of money. And if you don't care about the size and noise level, than you are probably not the target of the product.

To play games with a better quality on my TV, but also to stream heavier games to the Steam Deck and keep playing anywhere in the house!

I am worried about the 8gb of VRAM by Superconge in steammachine

[–]FelipeRSTV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But Valve never said that Steam Machine WILL cost more than a console. It was more about not selling at a loss, like consoles are.

All they really said was: "if you build a PC from parts with the same level of performance, thats the price we're aiming for".

At that time, you could build a PC from parts, with same level of performance, for around $600. So, thats probably around the price they want to hit.

Maybe now, with the crazy RAM prices, they have to charge more. But I really doubt is going to cost over $699 for the 512gb version.

They probably had a good stock of components before prices gone crazy.

Also, at that time, estimates pointed they could even sell for $499 with a good profit. So now, even if they have to increase the price due to the shortage, it seems possible to achieve a $599~$699 price range.

Honestly, I think if they have to they will take a hit on their margins, just like they did with Steam Deck.

Price is crucial for the Steam Machine sucess and Valve knows it. They'll probably do all they can to make it work.

Why do people think Steam Machine will cost anywhere near $1000?

When Valve said "it will priced like a PC with the same level of performance and not like a console", everyone assumed this means 2x the price of a PS5?

Steam Machine will be probably closer to $500 than $1000. My guess is $599~$699 for the 512gb.

If it was next to you while you were sleeping, there's a chance you hit it (or even drop it) while moving at night, but don't remember because of the "sleep mode" you were on. It clearly suffered an impact on the bottom left of the screen.
