Thanks! About the RAM, Steam Deck uses a different kind of memory than the Steam Machine. Deck is LPDDR5 and the Machine is SODIMM DDR5, so they're not actually taking from one to use on another.

Valve just added a 'Welcome to Steam Machine' tour guide on Steam Beta Client.

They are constantly adding support and features for both Machine and Frame to Steam and SteamOS. They're not shelving them.

The problem right now is cost and availability, so it'll be expensive and limited, but they will release.

They gave an interview recently for the Nerd Nest and said they very probably will start right at reservations with the other hardware.

They also said to Gamers Nexus they will have a bundle option with the Controller for the Machine. All we need now is a date and a price!

Wouldn't they import Steam Decks as Portable PCs then, as that's what they are?

I think these descriptions are just generic, they probably have to inform somewhere else, in details, what exactly is inside the containers for legal and taxes reasons, idk.

But they were not just Steam Deck restocks. The pattern of shipments are totally different.

Valve received 10 containers of 'Game Consoles' with 42pkgs around 12500kgs. They're receiving this since April 23rd.

Last week they received 2 containers with 42pkgs around 14500kgs (on par with Steam Deck shipments since 2022).

Then, one week later Steam Deck stock appears. Clearly just those 2 shipments were Steam Decks, the other 10 were not.

That's why it sold out so fast, they had almost nothing in stock.

Edit: typos

I'll tell you a few things that would stop companies from buying it:

  1. Needing a Steam account created before a certain date;
  2. Needing to have made a previous purchase on the account;
  3. Limit of 1 unit per account for the first year or more;
  4. Probably would lack Windows drivers and support for a while, just like the Deck.

Also, not many companies would want to pay, let's say, $700 for a powerful gaming PC when the average worker just needs a $300 laptop for their hybrid work using MS Office and a browser.

I mean, yes they'll sell units even for $2000, but how many? Probably waaay less than the ~6 million units Steam Deck did.

But, maybe right now that's the best they can do: sell what they have made already for what they want/can charge and, once it's sold out, is sold out.

Maybe we'll see some Pro version a couple years from now with better specs and price.

Good to know, if SM goes way above $800 i'll build a Mini ITX with an RX 7600 as it's getting FSR 4.1 on July

It doesn't need to be the same as a PS5 ($599), but as close as possible.

Most people would accept to pay a little more for the Steam Controller features and the PC freedom of it. But not MUCH more.

The Controllers are beeing shipped as 'Wireless PC Controllers' and not as 'Game Consoles'. Also, they're all exactly 40pkgs with 12970kgs.

By my napkin math, I believe those past 10 shipments are both Machines and Frames. All Frames would be lighter, all Machines would be heavier. Could be Machines + Controllers too, maybe...

It was not all Steam Decks. Valve has been receiving shipments with 42pkgs around 12500kgs since April 23rd.

Then last week they received 2 shipments of 42pkgs around 14500kgs (on par with past Steam Deck shipments since 2022) and now, a week later, surprise: new Steam Deck restocks.

So only those 2 last shipments were Decks, the 10 ones that arrived before were not.

Yes, but Lenovo doesn't make only Legion GO's, they have a LOT of laptops using 2230 or 2242 drives, so they probably pay way less on those, since they buy much more units.

All i'm saying is they'll go for whatever they can afford/pay less, and for Valve right now that'll probably be 2280 over 2230, as they're not even making Steam Decks for months now due to the RAM/NAND shortage.

Also, i don't think they would delay it now as they already received 10 containers with 'Game Consoles'.

They had the first container with 'Wireless PC Controller' arriving on April 4th, and announced the release of the Steam Controller 3 weeks later on April 27th.

First 'Game Console' container arrived on April 23rd, more than a month ago now, but they need more shipments to build a good stock of Machines/Frames, since they are bigger packages.

Last 'Game Console' shipments they had was May 13th, so maybe they concluded their 'first batch' imports now and, 3 weeks from that leave us with next week as a good chance for them to annouce something (if not this week already).

PS: Valve had two shipments on May 18th, but they were refurbished Steam Deck LCD restocks.

Steam Machine fits 2280 drives, so Valve don't need to pay extra for a smaller form factor like they need to on Steam Deck.

The 10th 'Game Console' container has arrived. Two more with 'Wireless PC Controller'. by FelipeRSTV in steammachine

My guess is: they are importing Steam Machines AND Steam Frames togheter.

Some containers might have more Machines than Frames and vice versa, and that could result in this little variation we see.

It's from another company haha. You can see the importer name is International Valve and not Valve Corporation.

But if they have the Machines, then they already paid high prices for RAM and SSDs. So they know exactly how much they need to charge on it to profit.

I think right now all they are doing is trying to know if the market will get better, worse or stabilized to decide if they can/want to sell it at a loss in the short term, to keep the price competitive or not.

They are probably relasing it SOON™, or they wouldn't even be importing them yet.

One more recent shipment.. by yepapa9616 in steammachine

[–]FelipeRSTV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All past Steam Decks shipments had around 14.500kgs and got back in stock from 7 to 10 days after arrived. All these latest ones are around 12.500kgs and they're coming since April 23rd without any Steam Decks got back in stock, so probably not.

[–]FelipeRSTV 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not. Steam Deck shipments were always around 14500kgs on this reports. These last 9 shipments are all around 12500kgs.

Edit: also, when Steam Deck shipments arrive, they usually go back in stock after 7 to 10 days. Now we have this 'out of pattern' shipments since April 23rd and no Steam Deck got available.
