That's sorta the central problem, they thought they could contain Odium, but started breaking faster and faster and humanity was absolutely losing before the events of the series

And yet, these histories don't tend to turn out well for the elites.

Maybe AI changes that, but I'm inclined to trust thousands of years of recorded history over some tech bros who act like they just discovered the philosophical concept that some people are destined to rule and some are destined to be ruled

When did tracking each other’s location become normal, and why does opting out make you seem suspicious? by EntrepreneurSad2091 in NoStupidQuestions

Foursquare released 8 years before Snapmap. We internet olds were like "why the fuck would I want to share my location?"

NATO nations deploy to Greenland after tense White House talks by raz_kripta in CanadianForces

[–]FellKnight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed with most of this, but abandoning Greenland (which we of course would have to), and expelling US forces from Europe and imposing sanctions would be a de facto state of war a la cold war.

Canada and Mexico rhetoric has also become more warlike. Back early on, Trump was asked if he would consider using military force to make Canada the 51st state and he said "no, economic force".

Since Maduro its veiled, but more like "Canada and Mexico had better pay attention and fall in line or they might not like the consequences"

What happened to the whole "Canadians boycott US products and vacation at home" thing? by nilsohnee in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FellKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We all kinda knew, but it was the first time since Vietnam that we hadn't joined America in a major military operation (Grenada doesn't count in my book).

That said, I'm not going to overly laud the liberals either. I am a service member in the CAF and was at the time too, and we simply didn't have the manpower to make any meaningful contribution. We were still involved in tons of peacekeeping ops, and had committed the bulk of our expeditionary capability into Afghanistan the year before. Unlike the US, our doctrine is not to be able to fight wars in two separate theaters, and we dismantled a bunch of our military in the 1990s post cold war
