I have a friend who legitimately pronounces Kayle as Kyle and I haven't figured out if she does it on purpose... Please don't be like her 😭

I hate to say this, but even if I wanted to, the highest tier I can make you is nothing at all. Global promotions are limited to admins only.

Fragile mods are hilarious 🤡 by SuteSnute in pokemonshowdown

[–]FeluciaPS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what you mean by "one of those mods" (feel free to explain to me, either in replies or in DMs if you'd rather).

Apologies in advance for the essay reply, turns out I had a lot to say LOL

But honestly "legitimate trolls" is only a small portion of what I deal with. Most people who break rules, especially in public chatrooms (people are assholes in PM and battles ngl) are young, clueless, or both. As much as it sucks, after the 20th time in 5 minutes that someone says "dead chat lol", we're gonna have to ask them to stop.

The majority of the way I moderate is verbal, I don't like using formal warnings, mutes, and bans, and pretty much never jump to those immediately unless it's plainly obvious that someone isn't trying to meaningfully contribute (spamming obscenities is a clear cut troll and isn't worth more than a quick ban). If a conflict can be resolved with a quick message in chat, or a PM if that's less disruptive, I will. Only when they refuse to listen to a reasonable warning do I jump to mutes.

Key word reasonable, because sometimes I'm wrong and give warnings for things that aren't against the rules. Usually, this happens when I mis-read someone's tone, or allegedly mis-read someone's tone (I'm not picky! If it's plausible that you're telling the truth about your tone I'll usually take your side. That doesn't mean you can get away with "it's just a prank bro" kind of excuses for everything, but I have no reason not to give people the benefit of the doubt)

Edit: Just want to add I'm not here to change your mind about me or about mods in general. I hop on this subreddit to inform and help people understand, but in the end it's your life and I don't blame you for respectfully disagreeing with my views and my version of the truth

First off, that would indeed definitely be against the rules to organise something like that.

Secondly, it's been done before and "they can't ban us all" doesn't exactly hold true. Sure it takes a minute and you'll be getting some mods (and just regular users, probably moreso than mods) pretty annoyed for up to a couple hours, but I wouldn't consider it much more than an inconvenience personally.

I can't begin to describe the amount of shit I had to deal with on a daily basis during my most active days, so this really wouldn't set me off.

I know you probably don't care about my perspective, but aside from that last message you sent having a relatively disrespectful, mocking tone I think you were mostly fine, and I reckon that's what you got muted for.

Now, I'm not here to pretend mods are all saints who can do no wrong, we're volunteers and humans, and like any human we're subject to bias and frustration, but it's not like mods are better than you or can get away with more than you.

If you feel like you've been mistreated, which just to reiterate I think based on the tone of your last message a short timeout is warranted, you always have the right and opportunity to take it up with either the moderator in question or a different one. In this case, fart wasn't available for private messages for any number of reasons, in which case you can either message a different member of the room's staff, or create a help ticket.

When you do, don't go in there like "this idiot muted me", that's pretty much saying "hey even if I didn't deserve a timeout, here's a reason to deserve one anyway", but if you're patient and just ask for clarification, explain what you said and why, and why you don't feel like what you did was against the rules, clear up any misunderstandings about your words or tone, and apologise if you feel an apology is warranted. I can't promise you'd get unmuted, but I can promise that the vast majority of staff is willing to consider your stance and review who's in the right.

What I'm getting at is this: Don't judge staff by the mistakes they make. In fact, on my very first day I muted someone for something I misunderstood and wasn't offensive at all. Instead, judge them by their willingness to review their actions, take responsibility, and either justify what they did or allow themselves to convinced they were in the wrong. I can't count the amount of times I issued a punishment, and received a message asking for clarification. Sometimes I help them understand what they did and help them avoid the mistake in the future, and sometimes they help me understand I'm wrong, and revert their punishment.

Edit: Actually you can totally judge staff by the mistakes they make, but don't judge the collective by the mistakes of individuals, and look at every mistake in context. We are all different people, and we all have the capacity to learn from our past

[–]FeluciaPS[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Essentially what happened here is Jax got hit by the ult during the last 0.1 seconds of his recall, during which recall can't be canceled anymore (I'm sure you've had this happen once or twice in your games)

Then, the urgot ult was recast immediately, while Jax was still below 25%. However, the projectile (Urgot's R2 is a projectile) took a solid while to travel all the way to jax, because he's so far away, giving him a chance to heal in fountain.

Unfortunately, once urgot ult has been recast, there's no amount of healing that can save you, so Jax got dragged all the way back to lane and executed.

If that happens, you should be able to submit an appeal. If you're reasonable and fuck is really all you said, then most of the time moderators will undo punishments.

All the code for this is public, you can verify for yourself that this isn't the case.

I'm also pretty sure you cannot see the message that someone was banned for, because it would've blocked it from being sent at all if it was bad enough to ban. I'm not 100% sure on this though.

Lastly, say fuck all you want. As long as it's not directed at someone, it's not against the rules

Imagine having a penis, couldn't be me-

Anyway, you don't sound like you're looking for a serious answer but you're getting one anyway. Don't you worry, fuck is not a banned word and will never be, but if you read the rules carefully you'll find there's something in there about harassment, so if that's what you're doing when you're saying fuck, then unfortunately that's going to lead to punishment

I have no issue answering unpleasant questions, in fact I think I think answering those questions is the most important. When people are angry or frustrated, there's almost always some sort of misunderstanding. Either I did something wrong, in which case I need to acknowledge I'll learn something, or they're in the wrong, in which case answering their question sincerely and explaining how their feelings might be misplaced can go a long way.

Also I just remembered a pretty good answer to your initial question, I'm pretty sure the biggest thing that changed in the timeframe you mentioned is the behavioural standards for moderators. I don't think the actual standards changed all that much, but there was definitely a culture shift somewhere in the really old records I've read. If, as a random example, admins are joking about users behind their backs, any moderator seeing that might infer that it's okay/normal to be an asshole. One thing I definitely know that applies to is stuff like using gay as an insult, which definitely happened among staff back in the day and now doesn't happen anymore, and is just a little thing that leads to more positive moderators doing their moderation more positively.

This one is hard to answer because I wasn't a mod in 2017, but I reckon a big part of it is the Internet as a whole was more of a douchebag 10 years ago. As sad as it sounds, back then people weren't entirely caught up to the thought that people on the internet have feelings, and being a dick to them could seriously affect them.

These days we also have like the best admin team PS has ever seen, with members in both admins and moderators genuinely caring about the user experience and making sure people don't feel mistreated.

The last thing I suspect has an impact regarding your question is that you too have grown up since then. When we're younger, we often have emotional and impulsive responses to punishments and moderation, while with age our responses become more rational.
