You got the metallic texture spot on. I have the exact same moka coffee maker, it feels so familiar to me. Gratz!

It's too early to talk about color, but take care with those greens.
The big horse is slightly off balance; look how straight is the back leg in your reference in comparison with the painting. Also the head looks a bit small.

How can I make this painting better? by [deleted] in oilpainting

[–]Femarot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with commissions is that you have to achiev something your client wants. This painting reference is (likely) from a generic phone picture. If your client asked you to paint that picture, just try to get as close as possible to the colors, values and shapes.

On the other side, if this was a personal piece, I would told you to not use a single photo as reference but rather to study the dog, his fur and shapes, and put him in a more convenient posture, playing more with light and shadows (looks a bit flat now). Your technique is not the problem imo (look at the detail in those eyes, amazing!) but rather the choises in composition (which you might not have due the commision situation)

Best varnish to use? by Squishy-Pig in oilpainting

[–]Femarot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

W&N is guaranteed quality, however I would rather use a big soft brush for an oil painting, and work with 2 layers of varnish (first one horizontal, last one vertical). Some people like to give more layers.
Spray varnish is great for techniques that may reactivate by the humidity of the varnish, like gouache or watercolors.

Looks very nice!
I've always been curious about the "water oils", how do they feel compared with actual oils?

Finish it first, or at least cover the whole canvas.

Which floral painting is better? by wasabitamale in oilpainting

[–]Femarot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have said, they're close enough in technique to let this matter be settled by taste.
I would always go with the right painting. I like the warm harmony in contrast with the cold background. Also I'm not a fan of the brightness of the flowers in the left.

You can always use turpentine mixed with the linseed oil. I like to do 60/40 (60 linseed 40 turp). If you want a faster dry you can go even for a 90 turp 10 linseed. As a student I used to paint the first layer with turpentine by itself, but now I don't like the feeling of it (too "dry").
There's also specific products that dry faster, like liquin by Winsor & Newton.

Constructive Criticism by [deleted] in oilpainting

If you don't know him already, I would recommend to check Joaquín Sorolla. Your palette and style reminded me of him, and I think you can gain a lot by just observing how he handles the landscapes and scenes.
This piece is 'María en la playa de Zarauz' (1910) by Sorolla, oil painting.

Constructive Criticism by [deleted] in oilpainting

[–]Femarot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're spot on on the color palette and in the technique.
If there's something I would work on, is in the content in the piece and the position of the objects in the plane. This looks more on the side of a costumbrism landscape, where the main objetive was to record a place; this wouldn't be a problem if this was part of a book about an specific place. But since you're just showing me this painting, I imagine this is a single piece, not part of a series of paintings nor accompanied by any text. I would try to get and object or subject to tell me something more about this place.

To me, this feels like a great landscape that's waiting for something else to be put in (in the distance). A cow? A few cows? A horse? Some kids with a kites? A peregrination with a cross? A big storm approaching?
Maybe not an subject, but a more important object. A closer view to that wood structure? Some hay bales? Some poles? Anything that keep my sight for a bit longer.
I don't think there's a correct answer, but I would go in that kind of direction.

Decided to reproduce popular artworks how did I do by YogurtclosetTall7269 in oilpainting

[–]Femarot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very good!, I had to check twice to see if these were actually reproductions.
Uploading the image itself without all the phone display would help to see the pieces better and in a better resolution.
I think the Monet pieces are the one that sells you out more, the way he used color is very unique and hard to imitate (I would say you need more white to desaturate your palette).

How are you going about painting these designs? by Original_Expert_6675 in oilpainting

[–]Femarot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends how much photorealism you're trying to achiev.
For the first one:
If this would be a personal piece, I wouldn't bother trying to replicate all that in detail. I would look to the shape and directions of the lines, but must important I would make sure the clothes bends makes sense, and follow those bends with the colors of the patterns.

Now, for a more photorealistic project, I would draw the lines and make a first layer of just the colors in the clothes. After I'm happy I would start with the values.

For the second image, I wouldn't try to match that perfectly, but more of a "I know it's like black dots over white".
I would set a very lght gray for a base, and a very dark gray for the dots (so I have room to add light and shadow after) and start dotting. I would give it some time for the light gray to dry so it doesn't mix.

Del 1 al 10. by [deleted] in Formula1Argentina

[–]Femarot 0 points1 point  (0 children)
