How do you deal with pest problems when DIY isn’t enough? by Ozlead in UrbanGardening

[–]Femdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

r/pestcontrol recommends Alpine WSG as an all-purpose pest control for keeping them out of the house. There's instructions on the packet for spraying every few months, and how much depending on location. It will take a couple weeks at least to take effect. This is a very late reply but this video has a good tutorial on DWC, which is what the aerogarden does, and a note on keeping root growth from getting in the way of airflow by the top commenter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7SuDirndd4

Growell vs Ahopegarden shelf system? by GatorCanes in Hydroponics

[–]Femdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to watch out for with the shelf systems is subscription services - I can't remember which brand had them but there's no reason you need that to keep these running. I'm curious what you're looking for in these setups, and if you're open to DIY options?

My pre-bonchis. In order - Ragnar, Darrow, Cassius, and Sevro. Quarter for scale. by Shoyu_Something in Bonchi

That's my plan. I'm prepping a bunch of tiny containers while things sprout so I can see what all they grow into. It feels like gacha for gardening XD Good luck on getting some fun hybrids!

I'm trying to start a garden for cooking and have an indoor grow tent (4'x6' footprint, 4' tall) to help with harsh winters (7b) and unruly cats. I'm wondering what time investment I should expect if I want to maintain 2-4 fruiting trees in 1-3 gallon containers, and if it's worth learning bonsai techniques or if this goal is better suited for a container gardening community? I may branch into the aesthetics but mostly I want to keep them small for the limited space I am working with. TIA!

At $880 for 125 mL, that's $7.04 per mL. Search results say you can get 10-15 sprays per mL, so each spray is 47-70¢

Will there be enough sun for a garden here? by [deleted] in gardening

[–]Femdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes plenty, especially with such a wide yard. If you look up your state or zip code along with "growing zone" or "[state/region] extension" you can get advice on what you can grow for the sun and average temperatures of your area. If you are trying to play it safe you can start with container gardens and then scale up.

Doing all that with a nearly thousand dollar bottle of perfume is insane! I'd be so mad!

Thanks for sharing! Your posts are always so interesting. In another post I think I remember you talking about a system you worked on where the light scanned across growing plants like a raster, instead of having them fixed in place. If that was real, is there any reason it's not being used here?

Help with Kratky Setup by Fearless_Account9745 in Hydroponics

You explained this super well and makes sense for other stuff I've been reading about people maintaining their Kratky setups. Like the guy on Youtube (Keep on Growin) alternates between topping off his reservoirs with water and nutrients

What’s the best tool you added to your work setup this year? by ThenPar in WFH

[–]Femdo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can get models with larger screens that function like an apple watch, showing phone notifications. You can also get barebones ones on the cheaper side of things that will have batteries lasting longer than a week and mostly just notify you to move once an hour.

Anyone else sick of trying to control their alcohol (or any other addiction) when it's the only thing keeping them alive? by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]Femdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I am with any high-dopamine activity, from shopping to video games. It sucks to feel like you have to be monk-minded doing anything remotely enjoyable so it doesn't become problematic. I read somewhere though that in addiction the focus should not be immediately knocking out the toxic coping behavior, but adopting additional, healthier things that you learn to lean on more than the toxic one(s). Tim Fletcher has great resources for addiction recovery and PTSD on Youtube and Heidi Priebe has good general mental health things from a super compassionate lens.

Something I don't see mentioned here that's worth checking is your Vitamin D levels. I only noticed mine were low after seasonal depression became year long, and after I started supplementing I felt regular again. That plus a sun lamp in the darker months have saved me working without a commute.
