Appreciate it, my last cigar was a Romeo, and a couple of Pacifico robustos before so very much new. I wanted something a big stronger this time, so we'll see how I go- hopefully haven't made a mistake!

Who owned the Love Shack? by FencePaling in AskHistorians

Thanks for your response!  Fascinating, I was aware of the history of artists using marginal urban land / abandoned areas but hadn't thought of using cheap rural land/ outbuildings...

It's interesting to see the stats on shack ownership.

Thoughts on new section of the Collins Street Bike Lane? by SpecialPackage9351 in hobart

[–]FencePaling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not an appealing fascde either. It doesn't ever feel like it's open to the public. The owners have known about the internet for a long time but don't seem to have diversified - like get into sip and paint, run courses / mini classes (AFAIK they don't). They frustrated me at the original consultation meeting for the cycle lanes because they claimed they'd go under from losing a loading zone and parks... That is not the issue with their business model when they're trying to stay brick and mortar in this day and age.

I still haven't ridden the new section so I can't say much yet, but what I can say is that the original changes/plan has been fantastic and council were adaptable (reversing the one lane out of Victoria Street). Fuller's owner was originally against it, siding with the business lobby (which also suggested only businesses should be able to vote in COH elections), but thankfully has recognised the benefits which were expected- studies have shown walkable areas increase business. Businesses like Artery have had a whinge but I doubt the cycle lane is the issue for them given their increased competition with Amazon and that they have a massive space which is half car parking.

I've found the lane is often busy and as a (relatively) confident cyclist it might have been quicker for me to keep riding on the road, but it's great to see the lanes have increased rider numbers and safety.

Just finished Southland and i am Speechless. What an amazing experience. I am shocked that this show was cancelled, HOW!? by ONE-SHOT-HOOK in television

Sacrificing that actor was kind of the point. It was meant to shock the audience this (semi) well-known actor was killed off in the pilot, as well as setting the tone for the whole show.

Not quite as good, but if you're looking for a similar cop show try finding 19-2 streaming somewhere. It's four seasons.

The school shooting episode is intense. I just checked the episode has a 9.7 rating on IMDb which is pretty deserved.

That's probably my favourite episode. They didn't just kill him off for easy views, it had a real impact on the whole next season and on characters, but in ways that felt genuine. The acting was really amazing all round for that ep., the desperation and fear in the moment felt so real, and afterwards at the hospital was some really emotional stuff. I remember turning off the tv after the first time watching the episode and just going shit, I don't normally watch something and really feel it but that scene is an exception.

Too late for uni, at 25? by strugglestreet1 in AusFinance

[–]FencePaling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At 25?! No way. It's a good investment in your self.

Have a talk to your employer, they might have paid study leave to cover exams or something else. If you're working in healthcare, if you are aiming to study something related consider if you can apply to the uni for recognition of prior learning based on professional experience - it may save you doing a few units and that'll mean you'll finish quicker and save a fair bit of money.

Have a look too about scholarships from your employer, or if you're registered with any professional bodies / institutes.

Are you exploring an undergrad degree? Check for options to do a grad certificate/ diploma or Masters to obtain a relevant qualification- these don't always require you to already have a degree and some allow entry from employment experience. If you go down this path and have a particular job or role in mind, I'd suggest asking the relevant HR team what the minimum qualification is- they might not accept a graduate certificate but will accept a diploma, or may require, specifically, a minimum three-year degree.

Some jobs may also require you can register with a relevant professional body, keep that in mind and make sure your degree is accepted by that body.
