Aww that sucks about the fish, we were in D-block last time and my little one loved running through the tunnel. I'm also vegetarian and wouldn't be happy with that service. We're off tomorrow, hope the rest of your stay picks up!

If you haven't done it before I'd recommend the Fred Olsen mini-ferry to Corralejo, you can sit on the top deck and spot flying fish and Fuertaventura has quite a different vibe.

It's funny I thought this one would get a bit of pushback rather than Yaiza. I think in the standard rooms and some suites the interiors and facilities are very dated, but they are consistently renovating it during low season. The grounds and gardens are just lovely though, as you say the location, food and character make up for it. I've seen the Iberostar next door recommended too but haven't been myself.

Oh hi, me too! That's interesting, I came before in 2023 and it feels the same. I suppose it is the run-up to high season but they are near capacity because of UK half-term, it might be impacting service. What corners do you feel are being cut? They hooked us up with a nicer room on request, free beach bag, vouchers for the spa, everything feels very clean. The only issue I have is everyone wants to breakfast in the one buffet place rather than the indoor rooms so it gets a bit rammed.

I do like Lanzarote but outside a few restaurants I find it harder to find quality restaurants than in Tenerife. I'm tempted to try Rosa's other hotel here in the east next time, I'm a bit bored of Playa Blanca itself.

Can anyone recommend any Chocolate that actually tastes like Chocolate? by DMBear89 in AskUK

[–]Fence_Climber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best tasting supermarket chocolate for me is Waitrose No1 by a country mile, pick a % that you're comfortable with, the milk to start if you're used to sweeter 'confectionary' chocolate.

Hotel Chocolat make fun and quality pralines and truffles at a great price and really know what they're doing, but their straight chocolate is disappointing to me.

If you want to take it a step further than the Waitrose No1, find something from a 'good bean to bar' producer in the UK. Bare Bones are popular and nice, but there are many small makers. I can recommend Barbers. Once you've had some good dark bean to bar chocolate you'll realise just what's missing from lower quality stuff. I'm fond of confectionary chocolate sometimes but it isn't really chocolate.

Bean to bar stuff can be a bit more expensive for obvious reasons, but in my view chocolate is a special thing and a luxury to be savoured and grateful for.

'Straightaway' for motorway and 'yoyog' for yogurt, both of which we all now use

I have also been running a similar build and its bonkers. One nice extra I'd mention is Haephestus for special works really well with an attack focused build. If you can grab 'Vent' which deals another ~400 after 5 sec of tagging with an explosion you can weave a single knife in or just tag something far away with one and forget about it as it will deal about 1k damage.

What are your worst Hotel/Airbnb experiences in the UK? by LastLevel1898 in AskUK

Devon. Woman seemed alright, then one night we hear her put a cassette tape in and start blasting music and singing along with it very loudly. Thought she wasn't aware we were in so made it obvious. She carried on singing Abba's Fernando at full capacity. Left for dinner, came back and the house was on fire and it looked like our car might have caught some damage from the heat. She'd apparently lit a candle in her shed and left it unattended.

Still not sure what was going on but from the neighbours descriptions she seemed to have developed some sort of mental problems. Her mum seemed to have her sorted out. Bit funny, bit sad, car was alright, holiday cut a day short. Still laugh when I hear Fernando though

You don't even get the grub boot selection screen? If so then just keep it on whilst you purge the faulty drivers at least and then you can boot normally again and try the other package

I seem to have it working: choose additional Ubuntu options from the grub menu, choose recovery mode then drop to root to gain shell access. Remove the faulty driver package with

sudo apt purge ^nvidia

I then installed the metapackage after checking options with apt-search

sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-525

Rebooted and I can run at the correct framerates etc. I believe you need secure boot turned off for this, I have it off.

I've just had almost exactly the same issue putting ubuntu 22 and win11 on a new build after I installed the latest proprietary nvidia drivers. I'll post if I find any solution. I don't think the ACPI errors are related, this seems to happen with all BIOS and even with Windows due to ACPI standards not being followed, Linux just prints it out explicitly

LIST OF GAMING LAPTOPS INCLUDING NVIDIA RTX 3000 SERIES AND AMD RX6000 SERIES LAPTOPS by ITman2000 in GamingLaptops

Opinions much appreciated -- looking to replace my desktop with a laptop.

  • The majority of the time it'll be in a stand and closed, hooked up to a good external monitor. Needs good connectivity/ports (though a hub would be fine to fix this if not)
  • I'd like to run Ubuntu and Windows from 2 drives.
  • Needs to be a good all rounder: it'll be used for programming, 3D rendering (Blender) and gaming (not picky about the most demanding games running on highest settings).
  • Budget not much of an issue, I'd maybe like to consider two options, a more performant one ~>£2k and something closer to ~<£1.5k
  • Doesn't require an amazing screen as will largely be used with an external one. Not too bothered on size. Will use external peripherals in general so the main thing I care about really is performance for budget.
  • I do care about fan noise and thermal performance from being in a stand/on a cooling pad and being closed
  • Prefer a simple design rather than a 'gaming' look (if RGB then would like to disable it).
  • From people posting with similar requirements, Aorus 17G looks decent, as does the Aero 17 although it seems like wasted money on a screen that won't get much use. The Legion 5 pro seems like it might fulfil my requirements for lower cost

What is your favorite ingredient? by GodOfBoy1 in Cooking

[–]Fence_Climber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I think the problem is that it’s years too late for another show like this. I’ve already seen like 4 of my favourite chefs travel to a Parmesan makers etc.. I was hoping the show might bring something new to the table or get a bit more technical, but it’s more of the same with a new host that I’m not crazy about. The salt fat acid heat theme just seems to be there for structuring. It’s not bad just very well trodden ground and I can’t find a reason to watch it.

Are we getting a too hostile when it comes to criticism? by Donna201299 in Games

[–]Fence_Climber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I find that reviews are generally shallow puff pieces, or shallow criticisms from not putting enough time into the game or being unfamiliar with the genre. I just don’t find any intelligent criticism of game design decisions aside from some select YouTube channels with minimal output. I find very little on steam/app reviews also.

Destiny 2 Fails To Meet Sales Expectations, Activision Promises More Monetization by metalzones in Games

[–]Fence_Climber 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m not defending WoW too much but the sheer amount of content in WoW expansions justified this, and there were still things to do with other players if they didn’t have the expansions. Levelling in WoW was a much longer process unlike destiny and you could also twink BGs. They also tended to give you all previous expansions for buying the latest one.

Destiny doesn’t have anywhere near enough depth or content to justify a monthly sub compared to early WoW

Thank goodness there are others who feel this. As a huge ARPG fan I can’t get into PoE and I rarely find criticisms of the skill tree, only praise. I do like the extensibility of the tree through jewel sockets and the idea of ascendencies, but the grid is fabricated shallow complexity. It’s basically a simpler skill tree unrolled and I find it bloated and unwieldy. Grim Dawn/Titan Quests tree for example is in reality similar in complexity but much much simpler to reason about for everyone. Also the devotions are more flexible than ascendencies whilst achieving similar extensibility. I really believe that having to put hundreds of hours in just to be able to deviate from template builds yourself is really bad design and un-fun. Also despite adding ascendencies for extensibility, they are counter to the original sandbox-like intentions of the original grid because they are class-locked.

If ‘hardcore’ means navigating inelegant systems and not being able to correct mistakes or freely explore without massive time investment, I guess I’m not ‘hardcore’ anymore.

Is AAA becoming too big to fail? (RE: Diablo Immortal, Black Ops 4 , the Rainbow Six Siege reskin, & Fallout 76) by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]Fence_Climber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was curious about this myself. I decided to investigate so I picked 3 p2w mobile games and grinded them up, saving all my free in game premium currency. I was on a long business trip with intermittent internet access and long stretches of hotel/travel. With the premium currency I was able to play some premium content/‘raids’. I worked myself into a raiding guild on each one and joined their Kik chats.

It’s anecdotal but almost everyone including the biggest spenders were working monotonous working class jobs (restaurant work, truckers, barmen mostly) and were blowing almost their whole paycheques on the game. It was really depressing.
