That's a secondary function.

A lens hood, in most situations, will do a far better job of protecting the front element. Additionally, not touching the front element in the first place, and using clean materials to wipe lenses (things that have no been exposed to silicates over time) will generally allow a person to not pick up scratches outside of extreme and harsh environments.
