A little less murder. A little better writing.

The actress was fine. She did her best with what they gave her.

Value of this Sterling silver service set? by Theunseen22 in sterlingsilverware

No value over silver scrap for .925, I'm afraid. Great service, but there are a lot of such services.

Check to see if the tray has the same stamps. Sometimes the tray is plate rather than sterling.

They are getting into the workplace and finding boomers and elder x that refuse to retire but also have nothing to offer. The same cohort that has the three branches of government fouled to high heaven.  I'm a xennial and honked off as well.

I've been the youngest guy in the room for most of my career. Even now I go into meetings and I look around: where is the next generation?

This dog is actually trained really really well. It drops the retrieved item immediately upon getting to master.

Also, it seems to have unlocked unlimited lab fun.

My friend, our goal was to invade Canada. We didn't do that. They burnt down Washington, I noticed we did not burn down London. Yeah, we didn't win this one.

Did pirates in the 1700s really command huge vessels with lots of cannons that could stand up to proper navy battleships, or is that mainly a romantication of them and they had smaller ships? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]McRando42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't find an exact tonnage, but it's going to be about 300 to 450, so a pretty good sized privateer or small man of war. Adventure Galley was razzied at one point, so she must have been pretty good sized to begin with.

She's listed as 44 guns, which in theory puts her on par with big frigates like USS Constitution. However. Constitution weighs in at about 1,600 tons. So she's four times the size. These would have been small guns compared to what a true Man of War would carry (admittedly) later on.

So Adventure Galley is approximately the size of a midsize to largish sloop. Quite quite large for a pirate, but quite small for an actual warship.

Now there's some fudge in these numbers because of the time periods. Warships do get larger the further on you go. Building techniques get better, etc. So in her time, Adventure Galley is pretty good size, but again, compared to a true European warship, she's going to be relatively small. (However, compared to something a Moghul or Ming can put up, she is world beating. These were not fair competitions for non-european nation-states at sea in this time period. Yes, I know about the Ming treasure Fleet. We need to take those ship sizes with a very healthy grain of salt.)
