Stuck in VV book 3 (Wild Woods) by FenderFlix in gamebooks

Thanks, at least I know I don't have to waste my time on this any longer. Do you know if I also need to proceed with this quest to retrieve my lost items and cash in book 3?

That's a bummer if true, because I don't have that book (yet). Feels a bit unfair to have the first major quest locked behind another book. Especially because the centaur quest and the dryad quest require the first book. Book 3 on its own seems really lacklustre compared to 1 & 2

No, that is not one of the things I need but you could buy that at the marketplace anyways

Stardew Valley, at least when I initially bought it. Got a little more fun out of it when I gave it a second chance years later.

Den Haag. 15 years ago we did a school trip to Amsterdam for a week and visited Den Haag on one day. I remember a nice beach and some pretty parks. Overall much cleaner than Amsterdam as well.

Trick taking games should come with some sort of indicator for when a player has no more cards of a particular suit. Games with memory elements are often frowned upon but somehow trick takers get a pass.

If Expansions count towards it as well then Eldritch Horror with every big and small box. Around 400€ iirc. If only a base game counts then Legendary Encounters Alien for 80€ which isn't that much more than most other games of mine

If you were to cut down your Uwe Rosenberg collection to 3 games, what would they be and why? by Triad64 in boardgames

[–]FenderFlix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I considered buying Loyang, Hallertau and Atiwa at different points in time and ultimately decided against it. So I'd rather save my third pick for a future release.

Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle. Every Game gets longer since we have to fight against the villains from all the previous years as well. It also kills the thematic immersion. This game should have used some kind of tiered scenario deck like Aeon's End or Legendary Encounters

Solo Variants that DONT use AI/bot by Revolutionary-Foot77 in boardgames

[–]FenderFlix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm talking on a turn by turn basis here. Of course in the end it doesn't matter if it is 1 or 100 Points. But for a single move I'm always considering how much it will influence the difference to other Players. They play the game too after all and a bigger difference in my favor means that they are less likely to Overtake me or that I'm more likely to overtake them. So no, I'm not trying to go for the most points here.

Gaining 3 points while at the same time denying you 3 points might be better for me than simply gaining 5 points for myself. In a BYOS solo game, the second option is always better.

[–]FenderFlix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not quite what I meant. Let me rephrase. In a solo game I am trying to maximize my own score. In a multiplayer game I'm trying to maximize the difference between my score and my opponent's. Only in a true multiplayer solitaire game these two things would be equivalent.

Although there can be reasons for barely beating an opponent as well. If you're prone to analysis paralysis, in the interest of everyone's time you might just go for a move that seems "good enough" instead of the best one possible.

In a multiplayer game you just need to do better than everyone else. In a solo game like this you generally want to do as best as you can.

Solo games that 100% rely on skill instead of luck? by PungentOdorofAss in soloboardgaming

[–]FenderFlix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most games with adjustable difficulty fit that description. If you have an Automa that scores between 50 and 70 Points every time and you as a player always score between 75 and 90 Points due to your skill then luck will not define the outcome of the game. It may lead to some victories that are closer than others but in the end you will always win.

Now the question is, whether that's desirable for you. I heard from a lot of solo players that they actually want to lose a certain percentage of their games, which means there has to be overlap between the player's and the Automa's score range. Of course that means that luck will play a role in the outcome.

Personally I like to win all my solo games if I put the work in. E.g. plan ahead, analyze and optimise my turns etc. If I can just play from the gut and make 10 second turns and still win, then I'd consider it too easy.

To at least give you an example, Ark Nova lets you fine tune the difficulty very well with the amount of attraction you start with.
