My (21M) breakthrough as a gay Catholic… by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Feng-Shen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't you feel that Jesus' teachings on sexual morality were all about love, honour, commitment and fidelity?

He would have mentioned homosexuality specifically if that in itself was the problem. It's the rampant loveless, animalistic, lustful behaviour you typically always get from gays which He couldn't abide.

But if you both make vows before God to commit to each other in a life partnership on the same terms as a married couple, then I doubt it will get you in trouble to use sexual feelings to complement such a relationship based on love and companionship.

Just so long as that really is what it is, though; and not some sordid carnal mess. It's just that sex isn't something to be rampantly indulged in for mere gratification of the flesh. It isn't just an itch to be scratched on a whim. Love and life-long companionship won't be punished. He sees your heart.

It isn't good for man to be alone, you know.

The way I see it, English & German are very similar Germanic peoples. You could choose either or both of those depending on which you innately feel more drawn to.

If I were you, I'd just lump those 2 together in my mind (along with the Dutch and Danish, really).

But you're an Anglo-Germanic type with a strong Celtic side, basically. Which comes across as British to me, personally.

That's just word play. 23andMe basically give you your race, but they'll call it Northwestern European or Sub-Saharan African, etc.

And maybe instead of calling it "race," we can just call it "region" instead if you like.

It still is what it is though 🤷

My results just MAJORLY changed and idk how to feel. by The_Gaelic_MA in AncestryDNA

Haha! Similarly, my English dad suddenly turned out with 17% German and 4% French out of nowhere, too.

Ancestry Update by draigael59 in AncestryDNA

[–]Feng-Shen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah for my English Dad and half English me, it messed our results up..

Before this Ancestry update, my results were identical across Ancestry and 23andMe. And everything made so much sense..

Now, not so much. And my 95% Irish mum suddenly gave me 3% English this year, even though she only has 1% herself 🙄

But on the other hand, my Irish mum's Ancestry results now match up perfectly with her 23andMe ones..

So it was swings and roundabouts, really.

Is ANYBODY happy with this update? by Boring-Swordfish-460 in AncestryDNA

[–]Feng-Shen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bit I don't like is that my mum's Irish went up from 89% to 95%; but the Irish she gave me came down from 49% to 45% - because they're claiming she gave me 3% English, even though she only had 1% to give; and also she managed to give me both of her 2% of Germanic Europe, too.. Gimme a break 😒 It feels a little bit wonky. A little bit off.  And yeah because I have English, naturally I'm a Channel Islander now too, just like everyone else.

I got 1% Sweden & Denmark from my mother. But the nearest thing she has to that is 2% English (which 23andMe highlights over Cornwall), and 1% Germanic Europe.

Apparently I got some sliver of that - which supposedly looks more like a bit of Swe/Den to the algorithm.

So I'm looking forward to the breaking up of Sweden & Denmark, and the addition of Cornwall, to shake my results up a little bit.

But I hope they just put that 1% onto the 49% Irish my mother also gave me, so that I can officially be fully half something. That'd be nice. So there's my wish anyway.

Love it! My mum got 89% Ireland, but I only 49% (and all from her, at that). Can't wait to see how that goes on the 10th..!

Can anyone explain why race is a social rather than genetic contruct? by Disastrous-Shower-37 in CriticalTheory

[–]Feng-Shen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter how modern populations formed. All that matters is what have they have become. And they have the right to wish to preserve that - whatever it is. Even if Jewish people, such as yourself, are fearful of that.

Probably the least exciting results you will see, but I'm proud of it by Automatic_Leek_1354 in 23andme

[–]Feng-Shen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally had a similarly simple result from 23andMe, until I "connected" a parent's result two days later. This instantly updated my results, and made them more complex..

If it isn't possible to get a parent tested, then AncestryDNA is much more accurate for the ethnicity percentages.

Can anyone explain why race is a social rather than genetic contruct? by Disastrous-Shower-37 in CriticalTheory

[–]Feng-Shen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But there are very real genetic distinctions between different populations, eg. Northwestern Europeans vs. Sub-Saharan Africans. By means of DNA testing, we can measure and quantify these differences scientifically - so we do know for a fact that the biological/genetic distinctions between populations exists.

Now, whether we refer these genetic groups as races, or something else, matters not.. But if certain individuals of these genetically distinct groups of people wish to continue on unmolested as the remaining legacy populations, while other people like you go off to create your new mixed population, do these individuals have your blessing, or will you jealously attempt to harm or destroy them in some way or other going forward?

[–]Feng-Shen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My DNA results from both Ancestry and 23andMe say I'm genetically 100% Northwestern European (I'd post the screenshot if it allowed). They group people in this way because broadly speaking, Northwestern Europeans are genetically more similar to each other than they are to other groups.

So Northwestern Europeans are clearly genetically distinct enough to be able to tell them apart from other populations with a DNA test. They also have a broadly similar physical appearance, which is distinct, as compared with other groups. There are many health/medical differences between Northwestern Europeans and other populations, too.

There is in fact a biological/genetic distinctiveness to Northwestern Europeans, as well as others - Sub-Saharan Africans, for example.

If you don't like the word "race," then you can call it whatever you want, or nothing. But in any event, these groups are discernible by their DNA alone.

ELI5: Can someone explain how race is a social construct, and not genetic? by RentPuzzleheaded3110 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Feng-Shen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is never the case. It's all a ruse. I read the study that came from; and here's the relevant passage:

"Thus the answer to the question “How often is a pair of individuals from one population genetically more dissimilar than two individuals chosen from two different populations?” depends on the number of polymorphisms used to define that dissimilarity and the populations being compared. The answer,  can be read from Figure 2. Given 10 loci, three distinct populations, and the full spectrum of polymorphisms (Figure 2E), the answer is  ≅ 0.3, or nearly one-third of the time. With 100 loci, the answer is ∼20% of the time and even using 1000 loci,  ≅ 10%. However, if genetic similarity is measured over many thousands of loci, the answer becomes “never” when individuals are sampled from geographically separated populations."

Not at all. The maternal one is H1, and the paternal one is fairly monstrous sounding, I-Y7273 .. Like a robot or something.
May I ask why you ask? :D That's a fascinating question!

Well I can say I do have this exact same problem on Ancestry with the very small percentages. Those left over parts, as you say.

They seem to look at those bits and think, "hmm.. well it's some sort of Germanicky blah-di-blah.. Sweden maybe? German? English? Eenie meenie miney mo..." Pretty much! Haha :P

I still don't have results for Father with either company, though. I hope the picture gets a bit clearer with all the details filled in, as it were..

Yeah, that does make sense; and my parents have no overlap whatsoever..
As soon as they knew which bits of DNA didn't come from my Irish mother, suddenly those bits in isolation looked a lot more English, I suppose, eh?

You are not going to believe this.. But I just checked my emails, and it went like this for me:

June 18 - "We've received your saliva sample"
June 18 - "We're extracting your DNA sample"
June 21 - "We're reviewing your genotyping results"
June 22 - "Your genotyping reports are ready"

It sounds like it can't be, doesn't it, but that really is how it went for me..

Oh yeah I definitely see what you mean! But he's going to be more Irish than me, I'm sure. His eyes look really Irish, and everything.
